¡Hola hola!
It's been awhile. Here's my thread for all things Cardiff-by-the-Sea related.
:)

Fun hour-long sesh. Chilly water, no wind, no leash. Super fun sets on the Twinny.

Ok, it goes like this:

Yesterday, at the reef, I got to try Daniel Hughes' Kings 7'4"x24"x4.5" Sup.
It was not hard to balance on, but did feel quite thick under foot. I caught a few waves and it felt stiff going backside (quad fins) and I cranked a couple good cutbacks going frontside.

The weight of the board did not impress me, as it was small, but had the same volume as my SB 7'7"x27".
I think small sups can only be so light, as they must float you.

Then I took out my friend's Blair 8'0"x24" surfboard.  That was also easy to balance on and paddled into waves with ease, and I tossed it around effortlessly...it had me laughing silly.
I've always liked Blair's surfboard designs, but haven't been impressed with his sups.

Then the lightbulb went off, and exploded in my head...

Sups are inherently expensive, so why not just hunt down a "big boy" surfboard and grab a paddle?

That's the plan.

Just how the mainstream Sup crowd are finally getting shorter boards, I'm going to be ahead of the curve and just use surfboards.

Sup The Creek's thread about real longboard sups...just grab your longboard and try to paddle on it!

 ;D

Pics to come in the near future.

SUP General / $99 Costco SUP

Just to let ya'll know, if your under 180lbs and have some talent, you can stand-up paddle the Wavestorm 8'0" Foamie from Costco.  Yes, pics will be taken of this atrocity. Boludo and I were toying with the idea, and it works. It probably bows in the middle when I'm on it...and sinks if not paddling furiously in a surf-stance.

Now I've got these crazy ideas spinning of getting a custom 7'4"x24"x?? That floats me.  The narrow width will be epic (and could be an epic fail).

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Starboard Twin-Fin

To beat the summertime blues, I yanked the center fin out of both my boards. Wow, just wow!  It amazes me how much speed the board has on even the mushiest of high-tide waves.

The 8'0" (red fins) is super-loose, but controllable. I can carry speed off the bottom, up the face and off the lip without that center anchor slowing it down on the hook-turns.

The 7'7" I've only tried once, but it's equal as fast. I think the Gerry Lopez fins would be the proper setup. But the 4.7" ones are doing a decent job.

I've had the 8'0" out on chest+ days and I laugh myself silly. It's so easy to clear sections. Someday, I'll figure out how to pull 360's, because the rear-end wants to come around on harder turns.

I stopped by OEX Point Loma yesterday and heard they're doing 200m sprints in the harbor this Friday at 6pm. I've never raced a SUP board before, but this sounds fun (and short distance).

If you've done sprints before, please chime in!  :)

The list grows. They are each accomplished professional (former and current) surfers and watermen.  We like it.
Some ignore it.
Some hate it.

This is more of an observation. I'm not posting this to preach to the choir, as there are many lurkers on the Zone.

Your thoughts?

SUP General / Do You See What I Sea?

(Pardon the title pun)

I kind of had an epiphany about Sup-surfing today. I'm at one of the local spots this afternoon, glassed off, tide-push waist+ high waves.  Paddle out, not far as the tide is quickly rising one foot per hour. Turn around, take off on a wave, do my thing, paddle back out and do it all over again times twenty or so.

During my session, I'm whistling at waves coming to give the lay-people a heads up, and they don't even bother paddling. Hmm...okay. I'll do that again...

"WAVE!"

Still, no goers.

Ok, you idiots, I now have the green light to every wave since none of you will go for them.

But it got me thinking, can they just not see the waves coming?  It was late afternoon, lots of sun glare (I usually wear a baseball cap), and maybe the little two-footers coming in were invisible? ???

Point of this post...

I wasn't being greedy, and was off to the side of the pack. But I felt kinda bad for the summer crowd today. All piled near each other, scratching for waves and many of them striking out (but still having fun).  Being six feet above the water must really be advantageous, as its not the size of my board.

Welcome to Summer. :)

I got my butt outta bed at O'dark-hundred this morning at got to the beach by dawn. I surfed this little spot between two popular breaks that's fun on small days and, uhh...was really fun today. Head+ high sets that were real racy on late takeoffs.

SCORE!

Just me and the dolphins for two hours.
If you like bowly lefts, then you'd like this spot.  ;)

Hello hello. Not that many of you surf there, but to let you know, crews have been dredging the river mouth all week and are dumping the grey-black muck by the restaurants.  It smells, and signs are posted warning people of smegma.

Paddle was run over. I want to cut out the taped part and remount the handle.
It will be for my girlfriend to use, and the length when repaired will be perfect for her.

How do I get the handle off?  I have epoxy glue, so the mounting part won't be an issue.

Thanks.

I feel like such a noob.
