Whitewater and River SUP / Lower Colorado group paddle this Sat.
« on: September 09, 2010, 12:19:08 PM »
A meetup group paddle from Grizzly to No Name. Rendevous at Two Rivers at 8am for shuttle drops, bsing etc...

Look for a bright orange Honda Element. We might try to get on Shoshone before the float to meetup with the rest of the group at Grizzly. Plan for a 19 mile day, about 4 hours.

Sessions / 10 days in Nayarit, Mex
« on: May 24, 2010, 12:12:46 PM »
Just got back from a solid trip. Cheap flight, cheap jeep rental and a couple of rental Joe Blairs and we are in business! My buddy owns a place in Sayulita, so we stayed there.

Literally, the best trip of my life.

I have never had better luck scoring waves on a trip. Screwed around with the gopro, but really couldn't be bothered. I'll post up pics and video once I get some editing done.

As soon as possible, I'm going back.

Whitewater and River SUP / Don't forget your...

Knee/shin pads, booties and gloves. As I am prone to do during periods of excitement, the Poudre here in NOCO showed small signs of life this past week, so I ran out the door. Excited about flows in the 300 range... it must have been a crap winter...

Get to the put in, suiting up and realize I am missing some shit. Ahhh, the shake out run.

That being said, I have some lovely bruises on both legs, holes in my goretex trail runners (what's a guy to do? I wanted to paddle) and some cuts on my hands.

Match that with a big effing smile and you have one stoked Allan... White water season kids!

Gear Talk / Home made double paddle bag
« on: April 09, 2010, 07:38:16 AM »
So I found a 1 yard remnant of black cordura at Jax (sporting goods store here in Nor CO) and picked it up, figuring it would be good for something. With a trip to Sayulita coming up next month, I was without a way to get my one piece paddle s down with me and 2 ULI's. What I needed was a bag i could throw a Bass Pro Shops sticker on and fly for free as "fishing gear", but looking turned up not much...

Wait, didnt I buy some Cordura a little ways back???

Ive been sewing up gear for awhile now on my 1950's montgomery ward sewing machine. It does one stitch, but that enough for me. So I set out to make a paddle bag...

Requirements...

1. Tough outer. It will probably go into my roof box, and is nice to protect the paddles from the other crap I have up there.
2. Hold 2 paddles with blade guards. After traveling, I still want to have my blade guards with me.
3. No descript / generic. Needs to look like something you wouldnt want to steal.
4. Padding???

So after looking at some of my board bags, blade guards to get ideas and assesing my sewing skills/desire to spend to much time holed up, I went with a simple sock lined with fleece. Zipper on the bottom to access the paddles. It scoopes in a little through the middle, but flares to accomadate handles at the top, and has enough room through the middle for the shafts after I put some pipe insulation on them from the Home Depot.

Me likes.

Now I just need to track down the required Colorado flag and a Bass Pro patches and Im set!

If I was to do over again, I would sew a handle to the side and a name/card sleeve to it. But Im not to bothered about it right now.

All in all, it cost me less than 12$ for the material, but 8 hours of my time to figure it out. So if you are interested in purchasing one, $1236.00 US in non-sequential, unmarked nickles sounds fair, plus shipping.

 ;D

Hey, I just wanted to get a roll out of sorts for the great state of Colorado. I do miss paddling with people and the multitude of racing events, so if we can come together, see what interest there is, paddle down some rivers or on some reservoirs.

Me.

SUP General / Dont feed the trolls on Swaylocks.
« on: August 27, 2009, 08:37:18 AM »
Please, if you are spending any time on Sway's on the "if you require a paddle to surf" thread, stop.

You'll never convince some bitter, old south Orange county, North San Diego county guys what the benefits of a Stand Up are. Having lived there for awhile when the whole SUP thing started, there's just no talking to them. With either your words or actions. Wont matter where, wont matter when, wont matter that no one was riding the waves before hand, ... YOU WILL NOT CONVINCE THEM OF $HIT. Just keep surfing and bring a positive vibe to the line up.

Contribute to sways as a design forum, and let's get away and stay away from the negative, non productive threads. Put the information out there for folks that want to use it and will enjoy it. Post builds, talk about new construction etc....

Just don't feed the trolls please.

Whitewater and River SUP / White Water & River Etiquette Primer.
« on: July 02, 2009, 10:02:28 AM »
As a new paddler to the down stream scene, I thought it would be good to open something for the clueless kooks to check out and read up on. I for one have zero knowledge on White water paddling etiquette, other than common sense and the such.

What do the folks with a solid background see as being committed on the rivers by new Stand up paddlers?

(this was inspired by the video of the stand up guy running over the kayaker video in general discussion)

If we could leave this to playing nice and discuss the mechanics/needs in swift water environments another time.

Last week Dan was around and took me down some stuff I really wasn't ready for... oh well. At least I'm a good swimmer. In the video pictured, we are running the lowest part of the always shallow and oh so sharp Poudre River NW of Fort Collins, CO. The previous day we had put in a first decent (SUP) of the Bridges section of the Poudre... ::)

All in all, White water stand up paddling is the hardest, gnarliest thing I have ever done...

Big ups to Dan, that guy is a freak on a board... Im the one falling down alot.

SUP General / Respect...
« on: June 11, 2009, 09:09:04 PM »
Gavere ("river") got me out in the ultra sharp and shallow Bridges section of the Poudre River today.

Wow...

I must say my expectations for my performance where slightly skewed. If you're charging white water on a stand up board, respect.
Probably one of the hairiest things I've done and I swam the majority of the sections (ie, fell alot).

Soooooo Dammmmm Fuunnnnnnn!!!
