talking story with Doc Paskowitz.

John Zapotocky, the fater of standup paddle surfing, for over 60 years he was the king of what we all call today 'stand up paddle boarding' . in point  of fact for over 40 years 'Zap" was the only such surfer until Pops Achoy and his kids Bobby and Leroy took over in the 80's to use oars to shoot photos of tourists at Waikiki.   Zap was nicknamed Pearl Diver by the other beach boys back in the late 40's for his skill in diving the boards of the day straight to the bottom.   There one sunny day he spotted  the Duke himself paddling in from Canoes on his 16 foot redwood using an old canoe paddle.   that was it! no more preal dives for Zap.    using ash oars for the next 60 years, Zap was the king of the lineup.    Zap is now in his middle 90's living in Hawaii Kai.

and thats the story .......

Paddle Racing Returns to  Historic 59th Street Pier For International Surf Day

International Surfing Day will kick off the summer of 2010 with the 5th Battle of the Buoys Paddleboard Races (the Marie Allison Memorial Races)on June 20th.

Paddleboard was a popular coastal sport in the 1940’s-50’s-60’s with lifeguards and other watermen taking part in summer races and relays on both the east and west coasts. The continued usage of paddleboards as lifesaving tools and the increasing popularity of Standup paddle-boarding up and down the coast means there will a great  evening of competition for anyone who enjoys the ocean or a good competition.

International Surfing Day hosted by the South Jersey Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will feature Sand Castle building, Surfing lessons, a Beach Cleanup, Music, as well as just plain Fun!

The Paddle races are held each year in memory of a 20 year veteran teacher at Holy Spirit High School  Marie Allisonpassed away from cancer in 1995 Marie was a true beach lover who grew up in Ocean City and spend many hours enjoying the shore.  This event funds an ongoing scholarship at HSHS and is sponsored by Marie’s family.

The Standup paddle and Traditional prone paddleboard races feature a 5 mile course which will take racers around the historic 59th street pier and down the Ocean City shore line to 34th street and return. Also, there will be short around the pier races for surfboard riders in several age groups.

Participation in the races is limited and early registration is encouraged.   The first race begins at 6:45 PM June 20th, 2010.   For more information:  call chuck allison at 368-1577  or email   ScienceLB@aol.com
