General Discussion / The passing of John Severson
« on: June 01, 2017, 10:32:53 AM »
I was sorry to read about the passing of John Severson. He certainly had a large impact on the surfing world and I kind of remember an influence on windsurfing as well.

General Discussion / SUP Fatality in Santa Barbara
« on: May 08, 2017, 01:49:11 PM »
This one is a bit too close to home. I just saw this on our local news web site. I did not see any mention of it on the zone.

Really sad to hear these stories. Since they had to search the bottom for the victim there was no leash involved. Normally a very flat place to paddle and good for beginners but not when it's windy. That afternoon the wind meter was showing it gusting over 20 mph around the time he fell off the board. Water temp has dropped because of the wind and I would guess it was around 55 F that day.

Very sorry for the family and friends of the young man.

Gear Talk / Check your XM leashes
« on: April 25, 2017, 10:41:18 AM »
I had to take a bit of a swim the other day and was fortunate not to have my board land on the rocks. I had thought I had broken my XM leash diving over the top of a set wave but once I reached my board I saw the problem. The plastic clip that holds the quick release pin in place had broken and the pin released on it's own. Great right, that's what I get for not checking the F*&^%ing thing every time I head out. So I'm home installing a stainless machine screw to get rid of the worthless pull pin and notice the original problem and also that I was working on the wrong leash. Turns out both of the XM leases have the same rust and broken plastic piece from the rust expanding. Both now have machine screws and are in my spare bin. Never liked the design and now I have a reason never to purchase them again. No need to complicate a simple design with an additional failure point. I may just try a waist leash setup with these XM leashes to see how I like that setup.

The "13th" a new documentary on Netflix is out and I strongly recommend viewing it. It is a heavy subject and quite disturbing. It has already caused some waves in the current presidential campaign.

This does not look easy. But if you have the skills and are willing to take a saw and router to your board it could be another way to enjoy flat surf

So rich white guys get a free pass to form a gang an terrorize anyone trying to visit their surf spot in PV.

But just down the hill in Gardena an unarmed Latino dude gets shot dead looking for his stolen bike.
