Classifieds / 2014 Starboard Allstar Carbon 12'6" x 25.5"
« on: June 11, 2016, 08:09:39 AM »
Ok, for everyone upset with the PPG decision to go back to 12'6" boards, I have the board for you.

2014 Starboard Allstar Carbon 12'6" x 25.5".  Perfect condition, no repairs or damage.  Purchased summer of 2015 brand new. Actually preferred the sunken deck of the 2014 way more than the thick deck on the 2015.  An amazing open ocean board but still fast in the flats.  Always rinsed and stored in the garage on a rack.

Asking $1200 and located in Irvine/Newport, California

Gear Talk / New ZRE Paddle
« on: May 09, 2014, 08:52:39 AM »
People are always asking about paddles so I thought I would post up a picture of my new baby.  The one piece of equipment I have never sold is my beloved ZRE paddle.  I have used a 7.75" blade ZRE paddle for about 3 years, love this paddle.  In the mean time I have also tired KeNalu, Quickblade, and Werner; I always come back to the ZRE.  Recently I got in my head about having an even smaller blade, like a high aspect Starboard paddle, that would let me get my cadence up higher.  Tried a few but none of them were as nice as the ZRE or nearly as light: my 7.75" blade ZRE at 74" weighs 420 grams. Well a couple of emails to ZRE and they agree to custom make me a 7" blade at 380 grams!  Paddle arrived yesterday and it looks and feels fantastic.  Weighs in at 380 grams, 13.4oz on the digital scale that that includes handle. This is by far the lighest paddle I have had.

I am going to try and get some blade area measurements on the blade as the ZRE blades carry their width much higher on the blade than say a quickblade.  They also have a very slight scoope on the tip to help entry, almost not noticable but I would say they are not as flat as a quickblade.

I have no affliation with ZRE, I am way to slow for that.  Just love a good US made product.

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / 2014 NSP/DC Boards
« on: December 11, 2013, 05:23:36 PM »
I posted this in the "Starboard losing its way" because someone asked about comparing these boards to the allstar.  In rethinking this I should probably have just started a new thread rather than hijack that thread. I was not trying to do an in depth board review, just a brief description of my experience with the boards

We have the NSP/DC boards in 12'6" x 27" and 12'6" x 29", and I had the 12'6" x 25" demo for a week. The 12'6" x 27" is my do anything, any condition board (I am 5'6" x 110 lbs) and the 29" wide is my husbands ocean board (he is 6' 160 lbs).  For flat water he has been using my 27" wide while I was testing the 25" wide.

We have both boards in brushed carbon and they both weigh right at 24 lbs.  The 12'6" x 29" Coco Mat demo board weighed about 29 lbs. All the board weights agree with the published weights

The NSP/DC boards really shine in rough conditions.  The NSP/DC boards work really well in cross chop and wind. These boards are the easiest boards to paddle in cross chop/wind that I have paddled. The board does not seem to be upset by them at all.  Going up wind the board works nice, sort of just skims over the chop.  Downwind is always fun.  We never get true clean downwinders so always messy, and the NSP/DC handles it great.  With the flat deck you can run all around but I have found that the volume is well placed and you really do not have to work the board at all.

The boards do not have the amazing initial stability feel of say a BARK, but when you expect for them to get knocked around they do not.  This is particularly obvious paddling the 12'6" x 25".  The 12'6" x 25" has a pretty round to noticable v-bottom, a little tippy fun all the time.  You would think a boat wake would throw you, but instead you end up trying to surf it with the board staying flat. The nose of the board is also well behaved and does not slow at all when coming into a swell in front.

I have attached some quick photos we had of all three boards.  I can get some more pics if you are interested.  In the pictures the 29" board is the one my husband is paddling, the 25" wide board I am on and in the picture it has the black mat edge and the Maui Jim sticker.  The 25" wide board has more volume in the nose and the standing area is thinner, the 27" board has a little thicker standing area and a little less bulbous nose, and the 29" has even less bulbous nose but similar standing area to the 27".

The weirdest thing we have had with the NSP/DC boards is people seem to think they are not regular hard boards.  Twice people have asked us if they are inflatables and someone else asked if they were hollow.  Even today one of the local racer girls was not even sure if they were stand up boards.  Just seems weird.

Let me know what questions you might have about the NSP/DC boards and I can try and help you out.

Have fun, Jill

Gear Talk / Small Paddle - Starboard QB Kioloa
« on: November 29, 2013, 09:19:42 AM »
I am looking to add a smaller blade paddle to my paddle quiver.  I currently paddle with a QB 90 but would like something smaller to work on getting some cadence speed back.  I have owned a QB flyweight and all though I love the size of the paddle the shaft is just too flexy for me.  I would jump at a Kioloa Pipes paddle but the thing weighs a tone (21 oz!).

This got me looking at the Starboard paddles.  Looking at the Starboard Enduro carbon paddles they have the area I am looking for however the dimensions just seem to not add up.  For example,  the starboard Enduro 475  gives blade as 8.1 x 18.2 (area 475 or 73.6 sq in) but the QB fly weight is 8.1 x 15 (83 sq in).  The blades do not look that different.  What gives?  No dealers around here have the Starboard paddles in stock so no visual comparison.  Anyone have inpus on this?

Thanks, Jil

P.S.  I do not prefer the paddle shape of the Kenalu so no Wiki for me.  The scooped blade really hurts on a straight up exit which is what I prefer.

Gear Talk / 2013 Starboard Pierce Touring 12'6" x 29"
« on: October 21, 2013, 01:55:35 PM »
I am trying to get some info/review on the Starboard Pierce Touring 12'6" x 29".  In 2013 they came out with the 29" wide board that is not only an inch narrower but also thinner throught the board.  The volume of the 12'6" x 29" is over 40L less than the 12'6" x 30" board.

I have read countless reviews on the 30" wide board but have not been able to even see a picture of the 29" wide board.  No one has one in stock in So. Cal so I have not even seen the board.  I was interested in the 12'6" x 29" in carbon and would use it for open ocean paddling (no surf, just paddling around the buoys).

Any one have info on this board.

Thanks, Jill

Gear Talk / All around board for flatwater river
« on: October 09, 2013, 07:48:38 AM »
HELP!  I am looking for a board for paddling longer distances on the Colorado river where it is flatwater but with a current.  Not a race situation but I need to be able to paddle 20 miles on it.  I have been paddling my ULI but was thinking a hard board would be more efficient, what do you think. Once in a while I will be paddling with camping gear (say about 30 lb duffle behind me).

The Ron House Coastal Cruiser was suggested.  I love the idea but at 30" wide I am a little scared.  I am 5'7" 110 lbs and I have not paddled anything over 27" wide in forever.  My ULI is 12'6" x 27".  Do you think the Coastal Cruiser is the ticket or will it actually be slower than the ULI?  Any other long all around boards that are narrow, say 28"?

Thanks, Jill

SUP General / Board transport from So. Cal to Bay area
« on: July 02, 2013, 08:25:44 AM »
I know I have seen this listed several times but I just cannot seem to find it on the search.  If anyone knows the contact info and if he still does this let me know.

Or if anyone is going to Tahoe soon that could transport a board.

Thanks, Jill

Does anyone know if any of these are available in So. Cal in the 12'6" version, not in 27" width but say the one down from that or the narrowest.  I contacted Blue Line in Santa Barbara and the only 12'6" they had was 27.5, and it is gone. Blue line said he was contacting Becker from Starboard, not sure if true or not.

If you know of a dealer with these or how to contact Starboard for a 12'6" demo just let me know.

Thanks, Jill

Gear Talk / PSH Hull Paddler
« on: February 29, 2012, 12:59:13 PM »
Looking for any comments on the PSH Hull Paddler (the hybrid not the ripper).  I just started SUP surfing and got a 9' Naish Mana.  Love the Mana and have been doing great on it.  However, the break I am surfing is slow and I would like to add a board that have more glide than the 9' mana.  Also as a beginner I love the long ride in that this break has so the 9' Mana is a chore to have to paddle back out every time.  Something a little more stable than the Mana would also be nice for the wind chop days.

I was thinking of picking up a second board in the 9'6" to 10' range, but maybe even a 10'6"..  The PSH Hull Paddler sparked my interest, 9'7" x 32".  I am trying to find some where that will let me demo one of these but so far no luck.  32" wide is a lot and 9'7" was not as long as I thought to go but do these boards really paddle better than a normal 9'7".  The waves are slow, sometimes not even breaking, and may have flat slow spots.

Any help much appreciated.  I will keep the Mana to help me progress on turning and actual surfing but would like something for small days or not ideal conditions.

Cheers, Jill

Gear Talk / Naish Mana 9'0" or Starboard Converse
« on: January 13, 2012, 01:54:05 PM »
Ok, I am down to these 2 boards for a board to learn to surf on.  I am 5'7" 110 lbs and paddle frequently in the open ocean but do not surf (never have).  Will surf at San O or Doho on small days to learn.

I can get last years Naish Mana 9'0" and last years Starboard Converse for the exact same price.  The new Starboard Converse will be about $400 more (I do not believe the 9'0" Mana has changed any so 2011 should be good).  I can demo a Converse but not a Mana.  The Mana 9'0" and the Starboard Converse have almost the same specs

                    Mana 9')              Converse
Length            9'0"                      9'0"
Width             29 5/8"                  30"
Depth               4"                       4.1"
Vol                  140L                   137L
Weight            19 lbs                 21.5 lbs  (these are weights reported by the company so they could be off)

Let me know what you think of either boards.  I like the 30" wide Converse but looking at the pictures the Mana holds its width a little longer.  I ride a Naish Catalina race board and love how it catches small swells. Also I love the 19 lbs (if that is true).

Thanks, Jill

Gear Talk / Starboard Slick Boards
« on: December 26, 2011, 08:16:33 PM »
My husband and I are looking at getting some SUP surf boards to learn to surf.  We have never surfed but do paddle frequently for the past 1.5. We have never surfed or really spent any time in the surf zone.  So we are Beginners..... This is not something we will do more than 2 days a week, just too many other sports (race training and mountain biking).  Of course as beginners we will be out on ankle slapper days.

The new Starboard Slick boards look pretty interesting to learn on.  Has anyone ridden or seen one of these?  Do they hurt less when you smack down on it (I know this is going to happen)?  Are they more durable if they run into the rocks (maybe use them on the river also?)?

Thanks for any input.  I realize the Slick boards will not be like the epoxy boards, but will they be enough performance to get you up and riding and to the point where you could demo performance boards.

Cheers, Jill
