Random / Posting photos from iPhone.
« on: January 09, 2018, 08:43:38 AM »
I used to be able to pay photos from my phone if they were from the photo stream rather than the main folder (it must have resized thenm or something) however I just updated my phone and the photo stream has now gone and when I go to post a photo they are to large. Is there a way around this without having to down load and resize pictures every time you want to post one?

Foil SUP / Foil Board performance Comparisons
« on: August 13, 2017, 02:03:09 AM »
I feel we are still a long way from having the perfect foil board that provides us with a low drag platform for which we can paddle up to speed and take flight on.

I think every on is in the same vote and no one knows exactly what is working best but a lot of people are retro fitting old board of all shapes and sizes so I for one am keen to hear what people are finding out along the way. I am also getting a lot of messages asking this and that about what boards work and tbh I'm still not 100% sure myself so perhaps with a bit of communication on the subject we can start to work out what feels good. Hopefully with getting as much info together from as many sources we can move the design of boards on at double speed and help people find a good downer board to suite there needs

REQUIREMENTS

- you must have at least paddled two different boards with foils on

- Only the performance is of interest here

- State what it is you like and dislike about the two or more boards shape and performance

- Post a picture of booth boards and foils with your comparison if possible.

- Try and keep brand politics out of the equation and make your honest evacuation and comparison.

Foil SUP / Foil mount install ( twin finbox style)
« on: June 10, 2017, 12:28:24 AM »
Thought I would do a little thread on installing some twin finboxes in to a old board for any one wondering how to.

personaly I feel it's important to spread the load so I opted for a HD foam insert. I also went for the futures long board box and they also spead the load and are a one pice box so nice and strong.

The first step for me was to laminate a block of foam and the  to cnc the HD insert to take the finboxes making the install easer and more accurate.

Next it is important to establish the waterline of the board and set the board on your stand with this level.

Then mark your center line and your position from tail, I opted for 20" from the tail.
Once you have this I lay down the insert and use masking tape to mark out the area that will be cut out.

For the cutting out I used a multi tool but this is were you need to go quite carefully as you will want to get a nice flat bottom and you will also want to make sure that when the insert is in it sits at 0deg to the water line. This could be done with a router and jig however would require a little setting up and most probably would not want to waste the time.

After you are sure you have the insert sittting in the hole how you want it's time to bond it in and for this I use a foaming pu wood glue similar to gorilla glue.be sure to get a even coat over all surfaces before spraying with a mist of water, inserting and then weighing them Fermly down ( I'm using lead bricks that I cast) be sure to regularly cheque to make sure it does not lift while drying.

The Shape Shack / Micro surf camper
« on: March 31, 2017, 02:32:21 PM »
So I know one or two of you like following the builds I get up to and I have been a bit sparce for the past 5mths being away so I will through this one up until I get home in may and start on some new boards. We got the little Citroen berlingo at the start of our trip and it ended up costing a small fortune having to get a bunch of things replace but it has served us well since. However we have 2 weeks off over easter and we are doing  a road trip up the east coast and we needed somewhere to sleep and make it a little more comfy. The only problem is I have basically only had 2 days to do it in plus maybe a little bit of time Monday.
The main thing with the build is beds for the two of us. Some storage and still be able to get two boards down the center when driving. I have used form ply which has a smooth painted finnish and is relatively cheap for the main part of the build and with a little routeing its come up really nice. Anyway here is a few picks of the build so far.

Foil SUP / Malolo Foil
« on: December 15, 2016, 12:33:03 AM »
Got to take a look at the malolo foil from naish in the zu store in Melbourne today. First impression was damm it is heavy and i mean like to hands to pick it up type heavy! I'm sure its not to much of a issue in the water but on land it is definitely going to be a bit of a weight. The board is 28" wide and is quite different to maliko, i think 28 wide is a bit of a mistake as from the board i foil i built the foil acts like a keel and my board at even 24 wide felt super stable. At the moment they are only doing foil and board together which comes in at something over $5000aus.

The Shape Shack / A quiver for Cloudbreak and fiji
« on: August 16, 2016, 06:21:14 AM »
I have just been asked to represent the uk at the worlds in fiji in November and i probably only have one board that is anywhere near suitable to take with me so i think the best thing to do will be to build a fresh quiver of two or 3 boards to take with me :)

Cloudbreak is about as faraway from what i normally surf as you can get. My regular square nose evolution boards are around 7'4 x 28 x 94L but I'm thinking going more of a traditional  shape with more curve in the outline so probably a 7'6, 7'9 and 8' step up. Any advice from people who have surfed out there would be great as I'm pretty much going in to this blind as to what its really going to be like out there other than a few you tube clips.

The Shape Shack / Vacuum pump setup.
« on: June 13, 2016, 01:48:05 PM »
So I have been working on this for a while and I think I'm finally done so thought it may be of help to post a few pics for anyone wanting to build similar. It cost about $600. The tank is a old compressor of eBay the pump is a gast oil less pump and then most of the fittings and vac switches are from veneersupplies.com. I have it set up so the the main resivoir goes up to about 20in/Hg and then regulate it down so the pump has to cycle a lot less often. If there are any leaks.

The Shape Shack / Futures long board 1shot router jig
« on: April 07, 2016, 01:36:37 AM »
up until now I have been routing these free hand and im getting a bit fed up with it. I have looked into getting the jig and router plate but its not a great design and requires there custom router bit and with doing them the way I do I prefer to do it post glass so tends to ware the bits a little faster. My thinking is to try and create the same jig and donut for it as you get for the 1/2 and 3/4 boxes and that at least the donut could be 3d printed. Before I try and start trying to figure it all out I was just wondering if anyone else had tried this as it seams like a fairly logical thing to do?

Foil SUP / Diy sup foil
« on: February 07, 2016, 09:56:46 AM »
As of yet I haven't had the chance to get my hands on a foil to try and I could not afford the cost of buying one so I thought I best get on with making something. I have had a little look around the Internet and it seams like a fare few have been made for  kiting so how hard can it be?

The mast I have made by hot wireing a xps core then vac bagging it with carbon the  fuselage is made from a old windsurf mast. I have been experimenting a bit on how to do the foils at the moment I'm going for a laminated ply core which I will then bag in carbon.

The Shape Shack / new stick 7'4 x 27"
« on: January 20, 2016, 10:52:56 AM »
Thought i would post a new build as its been a little quiet on here but seeing as spring is slowly heading our way i maybe it will help inspire a few people to get out to the shed and start building.

I have been surfing my 9'8 long board a fare bit and loving the rounded pin tail but quite fancied it on something a little shorter so i have combined it with the board i call the evolution which is the square nosed fish and pulled the nose in a fraction and tweaked the rocker to hopefully give something a little more progressive than the fish but still with a nice platform to stand on in the chop and mush we get here.
