Gear Talk / Coiled leash woes.

Pardon me if this has been asked before but what can I do to return my coiled leash to it's original coiled position? It got out of whack before I ever took it into the water.

 In the course of drawing and painting surfing and waves I always tend to lean towards pushing the painting to almost the un-imaginary. I was hoping to just put together a simple stand up paddle painting. As usual I went (overboard) and came up with this crazy guy paddling into an impossible situation. Acrylic paint on a 22.5''x15'' 400lb. Arches watercolor paper. Thoughts?

SUP General / Purist Surfers..

 Just had a guy come into my art gallery & he looked at my stand up paddle boards in the stairwell. I asked him if he'd ever tried paddle surfing. With his nose in the air he said, " I'm a purist surfer, I've never done that before." I then asked him what exactly IS a (purist surfer)? No answer.

Anyone have an experience or documented story of a rescue made on a stand up paddle board they would like to share? Keep in mind I would like to quote someone about this before our Va Beach City Council next week. I have one of my own but I need more please.

Cammar says he was the first, can anyone else verify who else might hold that claim (with proof)? I consider it to be a rather important claim as the sport and equipment certainly has gravitated to that aspect.

With all the excitement watching the giant surf in Hawaii from the chilly East Coast, I had to create  my share of the stoke with this Original painting. It measures 12''x23'' on a bamboo weave I collected on Maui 2 years ago.

I was fortunate to experience the height of the exciting days of windsurfing on Maui during the 80's. The Caste system was in full force and you had to pay your dues to live there. That part hasn't really changed much. Windsurfing is still alive and so is kiteboarding. Now you see more and more standup paddleboards on almost every car or truck. Gone are the clunker cars from the 80's now it's newer vehicles and it's cool to see local Hawaiians embracing SUP. (almost all).

Downwind and Racing / Paddling with Maui's best

Did a 9 mile downwinder the other day with the likes of Larry Risley, (La Perouse Bay) Tracy Dudley, (Noworrieshawaii) Jack Dyson, Randy Royse and the Ridiculously fast Jeremy Riggs. I was able to borrow Larry's (Footemaui Maliko14) for the session and man what fun it turned out to be. I figured with a board that fast I could at least keep up with this pack. WRONG, halfway through the downwinder, Jeremy comes up from behind me "windsurfing with his paddle" gives me a few tips and and leaves me in his wake. I burned off all the Eggs benedict from the morning breakfast just trying not to dishonor Larry's fast board. I made it back an hour or so later all smiles but with my tongue hanging out of my mouth, ready to try this again! Good times.

Events / Oldest Surf Contest this week.

The East Coast Surfing Championships in Va Beach, VA, begins Thursday with a new Tropical Storm forming near the Bahamas. This contest is known as the oldest in the US and has added a Standup Paddle division for the first time in it's history. Should be interesting with a new Tropical Storm heading in this direction. At last check there was only one heat signed on which could turn out to be a final. Updates to follow.

Gear Talk / New Footemaui Nine-ten

Brand new off the production line, The Footemaui 9'10''. Waiting to do a good surf test but waves are not co-operating. This board is however is very stable @ 29.5" wide. Volume wise its made for a heavier person 4.5" thick. Beautiful swallow wing tail makes it a high performance board. Also in the photo is my trusty custom 9'6''. Truly a work of art by Bill Foote. An original, no shaping machine used on this one..

The Shape Shack / My Sam Pa'e inspiration

Hi Sam, I shaped (carved ) this plank of white cedar about a year ago from photos of the old 1930's "Hotcurl" designs. Knowing this board would never touch salt water, I added some Honu for attraction during my summer art shows. I love to watch you create your boards from almost found materials. Many of my smaller (surf art) paintings are painted on found driftwood.
