I'll be coming from Maine to work on a job in LA mid-August into September and (of course) the first thing on my mind is surfing....
Going back and forth on whether I should take a sup with me, rent one while I'm out there as needed, get a craigslist board OR just use this trip as a good reason to buy a new one and have it shipped back home end of trip.
And I'm very hopeful I can meet up with a few of you while I'm out there. I'll have weekends and early AM/PM free as far as I can tell.
Oh yes, I am also looking for clean and quiet (mid-priced) accommodations close to surf opportunities.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

Why is the US seemingly 8-12 months behind the rest of the World in terms of getting new model year production boards from the major manufacturers into this market?
Is it limited production runs? Seasonal? (It's Winter here and Summer in Australia? Our own shop owners not interested in bringing in boards sooner?)Lack of reliable distribution channels and distributors?
Does the US not like SUP as much as the rest of the world? (market not as good...as profitable here)
Thoughts?

Looks like I'll be joining the Downwinding Club sooner rather than later and am looking to buy a new paddle.
For surf , all my paddles are head high and I'm very comfortable with them. I can't imagine going 10"-12" over my head with a paddle....but I don't know what I'm doing on a DW or race board from a paddle technique standpoint so I'd like to start off with the correct gear so I don't get into bad habits or wreak havoc on my aging body.
What's the current thinking on overall paddle length?
And Could anyone recommend a specific paddle in great detail (blade sizes, shaft length and flex etc...)?
I'm 6'4" around 210 these days.

I'm seriously thinking about another surf custom to go along with my small L41 Simsup and have been doing the research.
Compared to a few years ago, I have a much better idea idea of what I'm looking for as far as shape and construction to best suit the day to day conditions I regularly surf and how I'd like to surf them.
Looks like some great "short n'wide" shapes coming out of Florida east coast. Fellow zoner mdsurf spoke highly of his Stu Sharpe Honey Badger.
Has anyone out there surfed a Stu Sharpe short/wide surf shape?
I have seen a few Cannibal Corevacs in my local shops...they look and feel great! from a build standpoint.
Maybe a Stu Sharpe shape and a corevac tint/glassing? How are these guys to work with?

Think cold wind, steep, fast n'choppy East Coast beach break surf.....
I'm 6'4" 220 lbs intermediate surfer with decent balance. Have reached the point where my "go-to" 9'6" Fanatic Allwave is just too much board to swing around and is feeling like a load on the wave especially off the top. And in spite of my height/weight I can go less volume.
I have an 8'2" L41 Simsup but that is reserved for clean days only, too difficult to manage for me when conditions aren't perfect, especially in the wind.
The boards I'm considering are:
1) JP Australia surf wide body 8' 8" x 32"
2) Fanatic Allwave 8'11"
3) Starboard Hero 9' x33"
I'm sticking to an "off the shelf" shape because I'd like to have the board sooner rather than in the Spring.
Any and all opinions appreciated!

I love my short SUP's but still have longboard withdrawal. All would be well if I can find a suitable nose-rideable massive glide catch waves from way,way outside longboard SUP to fill out my perfect quiver and fit my 6'3 5/8" 220 lbs intermediate + skill level body.
Like what I see about this board. Thoughts?

Looking for rider feedback on the Hobie 10'6" CM Raw. I like this shape very much, have heard various opinions on the shorter Hobie Raw models but none on this model. I'm looking to fill the 10' (range) performance longboard SUP nose rider void in my life ....not locked-in on any one brand or model, want to explore all options. Any and all opinions appreciated!

Reading the " How wide is too wide" thread and other short SUP discussions, was surprised to read how many of you who surf short SUP boards sit down on them while waiting (and in some cases, prior to paddling into) waves in the lineup.
Not trying to be critical or a wise-ass here but the only time I sit on my 8'2" is when I'm too tired to stand. Is sitting down about conserving energy? Hanging out?
From a technique standpoint..... Am I missing something?

Want to go all in on this vacuum bagging thing....got a board that needs a rail repaired correctly and other related and unrelated projects waiting in the wings where this tool would be useful.
Seems like a pump w/a diaphragm, around 1/10 hp 3 cfm would work best in board building/repair.
Anyone have any specific recommendations on models, specs and places to purchase?
Thanks!

Shattered the rail of my carbon Starboard Wide Point yesterday with some (as yet unidentified) part of my body. Results were a nice tennis-ball sized shallow dent, pea-sized hole and about a 4"-5" paint crack/crease. Copped a pretty good hit in beach break and made out fairly well considering.
Unsure if it took on any water, did not notice any bubbling/air escaping from inside the board on the long paddle back in...will be running some tests later today.
Should I use Carbon fiber cloth to repair the ding/crack? For a rail repair, what weight cloth would be best? And also, Does anyone know of a good source for Carbon Fiber Cloth?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm aware I could get one made and shipped from someplace 3,000+ miles away... which I will probably do and have some guys in mind.
Just as standard practice to see who else is out there and what, I have been contacting "local" surfboard shapers to work with on a custom SUP really without much luck. I'm not asking for anything unusual but get the standard paraphrased response(s) "I don't do SUP's... they're too much of a hassle" in variously worded combinations.
Now at the risk of sounding naive....Aren't we just talking about a bigger prone surfboard here? Are the designs and hydrodynamics that different? Not meaning at all to diminish what he accomplished but when I see DW essentially take an Al Merrick Dumpster Diver (hope I got that right, Dwight!) , blow it up bigger and make a ripping SUP, why would that be so tough for a professional surfboard shaper to do? I really would like to know the issue that regular board shapers seem to have shaping SUP's.
