SUP General / What to wear to SUP surf in ~65 degree water
« on: June 03, 2019, 01:34:47 AM »
Cold(er) water Noob question here:

What do people recommend wearing to SUP surf where the water is around ~65 degs and the air is 65-70? I have a fair amount of experience (in tropical conditions :) ) so I don't expect to be floundering in the water and realistically expect to stay out of the water and on the board for almost all of the session. Not terribly excited about piling on the neoprene, but rather be safe that sorry.

What's the gear to have?

Gear Talk / Deck Pads on custom SUP
« on: December 12, 2018, 09:04:52 PM »
Does anyone have any recommendations for deck/traction pads for an 8'6" SUP?

I was planning on putting the Dakine SUP traction pad, but I have learned that they are no longer making them (for some reason). I would a clean look and a kick pad on the back. Any suggestions?

Gear Talk / Removing rail tape adhesive
« on: May 19, 2010, 12:58:22 PM »
Ok, so I successfully removed the rail tape on 2 boards.  The tape had begun to peel off in places and that wasn't so good for surfability.  The question is how best to remove the underlying super-sticky adhesive.

For one board, I did it with elbow grease, a partner, and an automotive bug/tar remover and it was a pain in the a#$ and took an hour an a half.  There has to be a better way.  I was thinking acetone/nail polish remover but I thought it would probably not be best for the underlying epoxy/clear coat.   Any suggestions?

SUP General / New HI law impacting all paddlers (including SUP)
« on: March 18, 2010, 06:30:31 PM »
This was forwarded to me from Terry Galpin of Ocean Paddler TV and Hawaiian Xtreme Sports TV.  It seems like there is a proposed bill to restrict the recreational use of the Ala Wai/Magic Island Channel in addition to the DLNR's current position of not granting permits for ANY channel use for ANY races.  This has already impacted several Paa and Kanaka Ikaika races this year.

Read on below:

Recent events have given me no choice but to ask for your kokua to save our sport of outrigger canoe paddling. It is my intention to provide all the information so that each of you may communicate the necessary information to your respective clubs however as I compose this email, the political climate surrounding DLNR is in constant motion.

As George Waikoloa reported at our last council of clubs meeting, we were unable to get permits for races that started or concluded in a channel or harbor. In response to that notification, we asked for the rule to be provided to us in writting. It was not provided because it does not exist. Attempts to discuss and find a compromise or solution proved unsuccessful.

George and I decided to contact Senator Clayton Hee ( I have attached the email request for your information). senator Hee sent an aide to investigate. That investigation is what is ongoing and morphing into several political issues that effect our rights to be paddling in Hawaiian waters. ... See More

On March 11, several of the leadership teams from the different Canoe Paddling Associations met with representatives from DLNR, the Coast Guard, and senator Hee's office to discuss this situation in the hopes of coming to a compromise.
Certain concessions were discussed but nothing in writing was provided at that time. . Options included- shutting down the harbor which would cost $, and setting up buoys to designate a traffic flow.

One item of concern brought up by Senator Hee's aide was that currently testimony is being received regarding a bill that would permit the DLNR to allow the mooring of commercial boats at Ala Wai. How does this affect us? This would make the Ala Wai boat harbor a commercial facility and restrict recreational use of the channel leading to it.

If safety and congestion were so important and the guiding principle behind this enforcement of a coast guard suggestion, then why are we entertaining more congestion in the Ala Wai by making commercial slips available.
I feel that we have roughly connected the dots. By disallowing or making it less feasible for us to start or finish in the channel, we may voluntarily choose not to hold our race at that venue. That action our part would allow them the opportunity and resource to provide commercial boating slips due to reduced usage from us.

Some day this week, the Senate committee will be holding a hearing regarding this bill. I am asking that you prepare your testimonies in opposition to the passage of this bill. Attendance is encouraged but not necessary to submit your testimony. At this time, I do not have a specific date or time for this hearing. I will communicate that to you as soon as Senator Hee's Aide notifies me. I have also attached testimony that has already been received by this committee. You may read and familiarize yourself and your club members with the content. I encourage you to talk to your family and friends and to make a difference in this effort. Our voice will determine what our elected officials do on our behalf.

Thank you for all you do in our paddling community.
