General Discussion / Been away for 5 years
« on: January 29, 2021, 06:15:36 PM »
Aloha all, I haven't been on the Zone or paddling for about 5 years, life just got so busy.  I purchased a house with a jungle that needed taming and I had my first kid, talk about no free time.  Had to buy chainsaws over paddles.   Now that my son is old enough to wear a life jacket and sit on the board, I'm back on the water! I have a Starboard 14' Open Ocean that can handle me, my wife, and my son! 300 lbs total and I can still stand and paddle. My SIC Bullet 17V2 & 2015 Starboard Allstar 14x25 seem like antiques the way board design and development has been progressing. My Kenalu paddles are still smooth and solid, love them!  The good news is that I lost about 20 lbs so the Allstar is even easier to paddle, haven't jumped on my Bullet yet but I was probably a bit too light for it then (172 lbs), and likely too light for it now at around 152 lbs.   Just happy to be back on the water, I noticed there are much less people paddling, at least in my area.

Here's a guy on Oahu making broken boards into chairs, pretty neat! It needs a beer holder though  ;)

Downwind and Racing / Big Island SIC Fun!
« on: February 18, 2013, 06:34:34 PM »
We don't often have ideal downwind conditions, but this weekend was an exception.  Short period swell, so the 17 footers do a lot of poking.  My friends 12 fit nicely, I think a 14 would of been awesome! Did two runs. Sorry for the long videos, hard to just take 3 minutes from an hour of footage. Praying for more wind in the weeks to come! BTW, the Bullet V2 is pretty awesome!

Gear Talk / Gopro 2 fisheye fix
« on: February 13, 2013, 02:20:36 PM »
When the Gopro Hero came out, the RC guys found a Sunex lens that would eliminate the fisheye, the only problem was, the lens didn't fit in the waterproof housing.

I did a recent search for the Gopro 2 and eliminating fisheye with a lens change and have been reading stuff on the RC forums.  Here's a video of 2 Sunex lenses that fit the Gopro 2 and how they compare to the factory lens. I think the DSL 377A will fit in the waterproof housing and was thinking of giving it a try but shipping to Hawaii is $50 2 day air or $60 overnight.  Would be nice if anyone else was interested to do a group buy.

The video is long, but a thorough comparison.

Downwind and Racing / SIC Sold

Heard the rumor last week, here's the article.  Looks like SIC boards will soon be available world wide, question is, how will this affect quality and price?

Downwind and Racing / Big Island Downwind!
« on: April 08, 2012, 09:20:55 AM »
Been paddling for over 2 years and have been craving some good downwind action.  Once in awhile we get a little here on the east side of the Big Island, but it's usually more upwind and downwind and disorganized ocean swells.  Headed across the island to paddle with the guys from Hulakai, thanks JF808 for the invites!  Great bunch of guys.  A few were on OC and 4 of us on SUP.  The first half of the run was pretty crazy, the GoPro doesn't do the ocean justice.  Later in the run, the swells lined up and glides were spectacular, course by then my battery died!

Downwind and Racing / Another upwind/downwind on the Bullet
« on: May 23, 2011, 01:11:01 AM »
Had 2 GoPro cameras mounted for today's run.  Makes for lengthly video editing but nice to have two different perspectives with no camera man but myself ;)  Aloha!

Downwind and Racing / Upwind and Downwind
« on: May 22, 2011, 03:03:53 AM »
Here in Hilo, Hawaii, we don't have the greatest downwind conditions.  When the wind blows, ocean swells get big and disorganized.  Sometimes, I paddle into the wind just for a chance at catching some light downwind.  The winds were fairly light today, but outside the wall was choppy and I decided to rig up the GoPro, mounted on the tail of an SIC Bullet, and take it for an afternoon session.  I really do love paddling into the wind!

Gear Talk / Carbon Fiber rail tape
« on: May 06, 2011, 05:47:48 PM »
Purchased off Ebay a 12"x30" real carbon fiber with adhesive to cut for rail guards on my SIC Bullet. The sheet was $53 which I cut 2"x30" to cover the area most prone to get whacked! The 2 way tape is cushioned which may help absorb hits but thinner would of given it a better profile. Time will tell how this fairs in the elements. At least the the carbon looks cool!

SUP General / Coast Guard says SUPs not a "vessel"

This clarification is huge for SUPs, especially those facing threats of bans at surf spots.
