Downwind and Racing / Downwind board help
« on: May 27, 2014, 05:44:33 PM »
I have been using my race boards for my DW runs and decided I need to get a good DW board. I live in California and wanted to stick with a 14 foot board just because it's easy to manage. I do a lot of paddling using a boat to drop us off so something kinda tough, boards get bumped on the boat. I currently have a older 18'6 X 26 bark kinda heavy and fragile. I have a 14 NSP that I use as a training board and in rough conditions but the displacement nose and lack of rocker makes it hard to link the runners. I also have a 14x25 carbon ace this board is a blast but hard to handle in the big wind.

Thinking of selling the Bark and NSP and getting a DW board. My first thought was to wait for a used glide. But I came across some C4s for sale at a good price a couple of hours away from me. Anyone have any info on the C4 v-1 race or the C4 pro race? I tried looking up info on them not much out there. Not sure if they are Hawaii open ocean race boards which would be great or displacement style boards?

Open to suggestions on boards

Thanks for the Help Bob.

Downwind and Racing / Santa Monica race
« on: June 09, 2013, 09:58:45 PM »
This was a fun event I did the open age group and we had a few waves at the start solid 6 foot swell hitting. I took the video from the Quick Blade face book hope the link works. They had three starts the elite men first not much surf for them, elite women next they had a few waves. The Open third if you stop the video at 1:38,9 the guy on the orange board is EJ Johnson, stop at 1:41 look out at the yellow turn buoy you see a guy in black, then at the buoy me on a white board then I only see one other guy behind me.

Downwind and Racing / Leash for a 14 DW board
« on: April 17, 2013, 01:35:57 PM »
So I have been using a regular 10' long board leash on my 14' board for my down wind runs. Planning on doing some DW races in a couple of weeks and thought it was time to get a leash that's not dragging in the water. Not sure if there is something special or just a coil long board leash. is it better to have a ankle or just below the knee and what length.

Thanks Bob

Random / funny kid stuff
« on: January 19, 2013, 12:06:40 AM »
We had some really good surf a few weeks ago for about a week, I was on the beach on one of those days with my kids 7 and 9 playing in the sand and Dane Reynolds who surfs at the end of our street all the time, was checking the surf. The surf is over head and I tell him the sets look really fun. Dane is one cool dude and surfs the shit out of anything just fun to watch. So he heads for his car to get his stuff and I tell my kids he is one of the best surfer's in the world. The 7 year old says where's his paparazzi he's not all that. At that time Dane's camera guy walks out and I say look, they say yea so what one guy, We go back to playing.

Dane is in the water at the same time we are watching some dolphins surf some waves and jump out the backs just skying in the air. Dane takes off on some overhead right surfing like only he could, I tell the girls there he is, he gets a tube comes out hits the lip then for a finish launches a crazy 360 air he almost pulls it but falls on the landing. At that point the 7 year old shrugs her shoulders says see he's not that good he fell and goes back to playing.

I can't do the story justice, wish i could capture the kids gestures and comments better but it was funny, To Me.

Downwind and Racing / How much effort in a down wind run.
« on: July 22, 2012, 10:54:13 AM »
How much effort do you put into the down wind runs, people post some great runs from Hawaii and Aus. So what happens before and after, How do you pick your day/time what's your favorite wind speed,do you solo or have a group, how do you set up the shuttle, how long is the run time/miles, what is the total time to shuttle verse the paddle time, what's a good distance to shoot for I figure 5 miles is around a hour paddle so I would think 5-10 milers would be good depending on temperature and skill. What's your favorite run and why?  For me the logistics seem to be the hardest part like to see how people work it out.

Thanks.

Downwind and Racing / How is the nsp 14 on down wind runs?
« on: June 27, 2012, 11:20:32 AM »
After seeing how well the nsp 14 did in the comparison test DJ posted. I have been thinking about this as a all around board. Something you can race once in awhile and want it to do some some down wind stuff. How is the stability in the open ocean paddling.

Thanks
