Sneak Peeks, Rumors, and Wish Lists / Quickblade U-V 88
« on: March 23, 2019, 05:31:24 PM »
Sounds like they've updated the V-Drive. Anyone got any inside information?

This is how they are officially describing it:

The latest addition to the Quickblade family of paddles, the UV 88 is the lightest, strongest and most powerful blade they’ve ever created!

This paddle is all about more power, less effort. The signature scoop creates a stronger catch with a smaller surface area, while the new “Black Diamond Elite” shaft is the strongest and lightest carbon creation from Quickblade yet. Excess materials have been strategically removed with more being added back in just the right places to maximise strength while minimising weight!

Gear Talk / 2019 Starboard Inflatable Airline
« on: October 03, 2018, 09:28:00 PM »
Starboard has found a way to use the "stored energy" from the flex in an inflatable board. And here's me thinking that flex was a bad thing.

Gear Talk / Apple Watch Surf Apps

Has anyone had any success with an Apple Watch surfing app? I can't work out what I'm doing wrong as I've tried 4 different surfing apps and none of them works for me.

This is an interesting development, long overdue. Will be fascinating to see what turns out to be the ideal board length for this race.

Downwind and Racing / What is Annabel Talking About?
« on: January 31, 2015, 04:16:38 PM »
In an interview in SUP the Mag, Annabel is asked about BoP at Salt Creek, and it is apparent that there is some sense of ill-feeling. Obviously due to the organisers' idiotic and myopic decision not to provide a webcast, we didn't get to see the event, and all post race discussion was dominated by the Connor/Kai skirmish. So what is Annabel talking about? Was there some other incident in her own race that we didn't hear about?

How did the Battle of the Paddle affect you going into 2015? Did the way it all finished at Salt Creek affect you going into the new year?

Battle is one event a year and I treat it as such. As any winner of Battle will tell you; if you’ve won it – you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. It’s just that kind of event.

To know that I have consistently lined up and put myself on the podium or challenged for the win for four consecutive years is what I take away from it.

I can’t control how event directors choose to execute their event, I can’t control the actions of others, all I can control is what I do and to roll with the punches as they are thrown.

While Battle is important, I am not solely defined by a single event or result. Quite simply, it’s water off a duck’s back.

SUP Advocacy / Paddleboarder Missing
« on: December 15, 2014, 06:01:44 PM »
Fingers crossed that this turns out well but the story does point toward the conclusion that the law is an ass - a 19 year old is missing at sea after he was last seen falling off his paddleboard, which was later recovered washed ashore along with his life jacket. So it would seem his life jacket was attached to the board and he didn't have a leg rope. All perfectly legal, but entirely useless as these events appear to have unfolded. The law needs to recognise that a life jacket is pointless when it floats away attached to a board, and that a mandatory leg rope would be far more effective.

Gear Talk / 2015 Starboard Sprint 14' x 23"
« on: October 31, 2014, 11:48:06 PM »
The new Race is getting all the attention in the 2015 Starboard range, and that has concealed the fact that the Sprint has received a considerable facelift and tummy tuck. I suspect it will be hard to beat in flat water sprint racing. It's 14' x 23" (there's no wide boy version), it's recommended for paddlers up to 75kg, and it weighs just over 11kg itself. Check out this short vid...
