« on: October 19, 2015, 01:44:54 PM »
Hi folks, starting to look for a small rental house or condo on Maui for July/August of 2016. Hoping to find something for 3-4 weeks for myself, wife & 8 year old.
Willing to spend around $3000 for 4 weeks, but of course less would be awesome too (-:
Please PM me, or respond here with any leads or ideas.  Cheers!

SUP General / Air Mattress Surfing Video
« on: May 27, 2015, 12:35:14 PM »
Also known as the iSUP. I just returned from Oahu where I rode Chuns Reef, Flat Island, and some of the town spots on my 9'3" Uli iSUP.  Also tried out our new Kialoa Insanity 3-piece travel paddle.  Not a bad little combo considering it all packs in a duffle bag for the flight.
Short little GoPro vid of my mediocre wave skills around Waikiki in waist to shoulder high, for those that have asked about surfing an iSUP…

At yesterdays Vancouver SUP Challenge, the race director implemented the super buoy rule.  Similar in concept to what has been discussed on SUPRacer.com, an extra buoy was placed outside the set course in both the 12'6" course race & the sprint course.  The "super buoy" added about 10-20 seconds to your lap time, and each racer had to go around the super buoy once, on a lap of their choice. As a racer you could opt when and for what reason you took the super buoy. It made for a much more exciting race for racers and spectators and broke up the inevitable & predictable draft trains.  It was the most fun I've had in a race in a very long time.

We filmed this with our Kialoa last winter in Hood River and Portland OR... Featuring Karen Wrenn, Cyril Burguiere & myself... Nothing epic, but some beautiful shots.  And it was REALLY cold.

Downwind and Racing / Board the Fjord Race Video
« on: September 20, 2013, 06:40:37 AM »
Very pro edit of last weeks 14 kilometer flat water race in Deep Cove British Columbia.  Shows the great battle between American Matt Parker (Bark/Werner) and Canadian Norm Hann (Boardworks/Kialoa). After 14 kilometers, the race came down to a win by less than a board length...

Downwind and Racing / Guinness Record for 24 Hour Flatwater SUP?
« on: August 19, 2013, 04:54:50 PM »
My friend is attempting to break the 24 hour kayak distance record tomorrow in Bellingham, WA.  He will have to break 150.3 miles in his Epic V10 Surfski.  He set the record in 2006 with 140 miles, but was beat one week later by the current record holder.

I was wondering if anyone has an official Guinness record for flatwater SUP?  I couldn't find one on their site.  I know there was a record set on the Yukon River... but that was greatly aided by current... something like 230 miles.

Downwind and Racing / NxW Soundrider Race Vid
« on: August 12, 2013, 06:18:55 PM »
I made this short GoPro video from yesterdays 8 mile, flat water race in Steilacoom Washington.  I got some fun footage of the buoy turns and drafting as we race together a lot, so we get REAL close in the buoy turns... like on top of the guys board in front of you.

M&M boards were first and second, Starboard 3rd & 404 4th (no pun intended)

Downwind and Racing / What is your opinion of the WPA?
« on: May 23, 2013, 03:43:21 PM »
I apologize if this has been discussed elsewhere & I am not doing this to bad-mouth the hard working folks at the WPA, but...

I have been hearing a lot this early season about race promotors dropping the WPA certification for their races.  In one case, it's saving the promotor $600 that he will instead put into take-home race jerseys and food after the race.

As a racer, the last two seasons I tried to hit as many WPA races regionally as I could... trying to achieve a high ranking in the season-end results... But now I ask myself why?  My sponsors don't care, it's not advertised & I realize that I don't actually get anything out of it.  I want to go to races based on a cool venue, home made/quirky trophies, good food and fun atmosphere...

A recent non-scientific Facebook poll of most the top racers in the Pacific Northwest Region showed that not one cared one way or the other if a race was WPA and most are not re-upping on their memberships.

Curious as to what other regions think...

Downwind and Racing / Drafting Video
« on: May 02, 2013, 04:39:31 PM »
We have a weekly Wednesday Night race, mostly surf skis and outriggers, usually I am the only SUP there, so I take my 19' unlimited.  I start about one minute ahead of the main field and try to hang on for dear life when they pass me. No drafting rules, no prizes, it's a total free-for-all. Some of the best intensity training I get... Like motor pacing on a bicycle behind a car...

Video gets a bit grainy at the end, the GoPro lens didn't like the setting sun...

Downwind and Racing / GPS & GoPro Vid
« on: April 15, 2013, 01:57:58 PM »
Geeked-out a little the other day and set up my GPS so you can see the mph in the video... It was my "hard-effort, race simulation day" so I thought I'd get some good numbers...

My GPS screen is going-out, so all you can see is current mph.  My new one will show heart rate as well, that will be enlightening...

It's not the most stimulating video, but for all those posts that ask "what kind of speeds are you going"... here's the answer.

Downwind and Racing / Bellingham Bay Downwind Vid
« on: March 21, 2013, 08:29:47 AM »
Probably at the exact same moment as Rastaman's Seattle downwinder, we were doing it 2 hours north... 30mph sustained, gusting over 40.
Air temp 42 degrees F.  Water temp 46 (-:  One surf ski & one SUP.

Today it is almost dead calm...
