Ke Nalu / Ke Nalu Hydrofoil
« on: November 18, 2017, 02:46:16 AM »
Well, I've been keeping my mouth shut about this (due to sticking my foot in it in the past & talking about things too soon) but it's finally a reality. After over a year of development/testing the first Ke Nalu hydrofoils are coming out of the molds. The 'Iwa (pronounced "Eva"..the Hawaiian frigatebird) will come in two sizes the 580 is 1084 cm2 with an aspect ratio of 3.3. The 775 is 1496 cm2 - aspect ratio 4.14.

There are a handful going out now to make sure everything is as it should be. Once we've confirmed that, since the Zone has always been good to us, I'll offer a limited time "Zone Deal" with a substantial discount to help us get some of these in the water & to get the word out. This has been a long time in the making & I'm really happy with what we've come up with. I hope you will be too.

The construction is all pre-preg carbon. I'm really stoked with the quality of manufacturing.

The foil section used for the main wing is a variation of a heavily tested/tried and true NASA/Langley low speed wing design which should be perfect for hydrofoil use. The development of this wing took several months & tested very well on computer (hopefully real world testing proves the same).

You'll be able to use either a plate mount or deep tuttle. The mast is currently at 55cm but we're considering going 60 due to some of the feedback I've heard already regarding other foils.

The rear wing has two mounting positions (forward & aft). The recommended position to start is the aft. You'll also be able to change the angle of incidence (thus the angle of attack when moving) of the rear wing. I considered quite a few options for doing this but opted for the simplest with the thinking that it's not likely any adjustment will be necessary & if so it should only be a one time thing; so I didn't think an "on the fly" adjustment would really be necessary. We had custom made shims made (basically washers...but they're not) that change the angle by 1/2 degree each.

Lots of other details but I've already gotten too long winded. Here's some pics:

Ke Nalu / Ke Nalu's New Blade Design
« on: March 04, 2016, 01:12:00 AM »
Just wanted to let you all know Ke Nalu has a new blade design that will be available soon; the "Mana" was inspired by the Konihi & since there's been so much talk about a 90 sq. in. blade that's one of the two sizes offered. The other will be an 82 sq. in.

So what's new?

The Mana has a slightly narrower tip for a smooth as silk entry, a more parallel outline with more cupping added and deeper concaves to provide more power from smaller sq. in. blade sizes. We've also incorporated the "winglets" of the Konihi but lowered them down just a bit (from the shaft end of the blade) doing this helps reduce the "sucking" sound that was reported from the Konihi when not fully planting before starting your stroke. All this combined gives you more power with less fatigue.

I was thinking of running a "Zonestarter"special (kinda like Kickstarter but just for you guys) that would both help with the production costs as well as get some paddles in your hands for an "early bird" special price. The Mana will retail for $475 but for the Zonestarter special I'll offer them for $100 bucks off at $375. Since the goal is to help with production costs it will require payment up front. Production is yet to start but I'm VERY much hoping to have these available in about a month. Those that take advantage of this will have the first production models available. Please PM me if interested.

Ke Nalu / Have a few Konihi and Ho'oloa fac. 2nd blades
« on: June 19, 2015, 04:25:48 AM »
Hi Guys,

I wanted to let you all know that I have a VERY limited number of Konihi and Ho'oloa factory 2nd blades & I wanted to give Zoners the first crack at 'em.  Since they aren't listed on the website you'll have to send me an email to customerservice@kenalu.com if you want one (since I'll need your email address for a Paypal payment request PM written here won't work). (I know a few of our dealers are regulars here  too & yes, you guys get dealer pricing on them). Pricing for the Konihi blades (blade only) are $237 (regular retail $287) for a complete paddle starting at $385 with an xTuf or xTuf(S) shaft +$40 for an Elite shaft. The Ho'oloa pricing will be the same as the Elite prices here: http://kenalu.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=4 I'm not expecting these to last long so if you've been wanting to try one of these, now's your chance. Shoot me an email with what you want (blade type & size, shaft type (if applicable) and handle (if applicable) & you're shipping address (they'll probably ship UPS so no PO boxes please) and I'll shoot you a Paypal request for payment.

Gear Talk / Ke Nalu Board?
« on: September 21, 2014, 10:32:39 PM »
...Kind of, it's mine so of course I'd logo it with Ke Nalu. But so much of what I have gleaned from the pages of the Zone went into this board I wanted to share it with you. It's my first "short board" (7' 10") & I wanted to make sure I didn't go too small yet still get what I wanted out of it. After what I had read on some of the volume threads I felt pretty comfortable at 119 liters (I'm about 187 lbs.- 85kg). It's meant for pretty choppy/crappy conditions, head high to slightly above, so that's where the width came in (31.75"). I'm really happy with the weight at 7.5kg. There's some cool technology that went into it. It's neither a China board or Cobra & I had the freedom to be a part of the building process so it was a pretty fun project. The bottom is a single concave working into a slight double into the V & exiting with flat panel V (kind of a reverse V in the release). All pretty standard & what I'm used to riding on prone boards. Now I just have to see how it rides. What do you guys think? (By the way, not really thinking of getting into the board market at this point since it's pretty oversaturated as it is; but now I have the facilities I'll be able to make some custom boards again for myself...& maybe a few others if there's interest).

Ke Nalu's latest creation the "Konihi" is now available www.kenalu.com. We're planning on running a Zone special but production and quantities are currently limited so we need to see how the dust settles first. If you're serious about racing or flat water performance the Konihi is a true game changer!

Ke Nalu / Ke Nalu's New Ho'oloa Zone Special
« on: April 28, 2014, 07:52:45 AM »
It's been a much longer than anticipated wait but our new Ho'oloa paddles are finally here! Starting today & running until May 7th we're offering a 10% discount on Ho'oloa paddles for all "Zoners". We'd like to run this offer longer & we'll check on that but there has been an overwhelming response to these & so far demand has exceeded production capacity so we'll start with this & see how things go. To take advantage of the offer you'll need to be logged into our site www.kenalu.com and use the coupon code "Zone 1" when checking out. (for U.S. sales through the U.S. Ke Nalu website only).

Thanks to all of you for your continued support! Everyone that has tried these paddles has really loved them, Tom (who started the review thread) has called it "his new favorite paddle" & we're confident you'll love it too
