Good luck to everyone doing the race tomorrow... Maui paddlers - Jack and Livio solo, Talia in Canoe. Dane and T as a team. Devin and Chan as a team. Randy and Mike in OC1. Dave paddling 2 man with Junya, Mark and Jeremy as a team, and the Aussies Dave and Jon solo as well... I'm sure there are more Maui folks but thats who I heard so far from Randy this morning.. 23 miles between 2 islands.. Cant wait to see the pics and hear the stories... Next year I should be strong enough..

Tough tough race... Livio won overall SUP on his new F16... the super special autoclave model... Jeremy finished 2nd overall , 1st in class, forget who came in 2nd behind Jeremy, Lee came in 3rd behind J, 4th overall.. Long hard race.. very light winds, big swell.. 1 snapped F14 (bummers).

Much more fun race than last weeks... Quite the variety of boards too... F16, 12'6" SIC, 2 Foote 14's, F18 and I think a stock big Naish... The men had a very tight run for the first couple miles with Lee on the F16 leading, Larry on the Foote 14 right there and I forgot his name on the funny looking little SIC. Pono took a tumble in the chop and was not able to make it up. Lee ran out of juice at the mark and was passed. Heading back to Black Rock had a tiny headwind and the F16 just doesnt work in those conditions... Didnt get to talk to Larry so dont know how the rest of the race went... It is much more fun when they start us earlier so the canoes overtake us partway through the course... Funny, I found my stroke changing as they whizzed by me... Much shorter, quicker strokes. I had a really close tight race as well... We all had good starts for a change.... I got a good pace going on my first race with the Foote 14... can really feel the almost 10lb difference between the F16 and the Foote 14. In flat water, especially for someone my size.. weight does make a huge difference... I lead all the way (barely) almost to the first mark with the Naish coming up on the inside from behind and we were side by side for a little way... I ended up backing off a little knowing she would have to swing wide coming around the mark and would burn out trying to overtake me. I was able to tuck inside and take the advantage... All those years of windsurf slalom racing kinda paid off... Then the grind to the finish... Was almost overtaken at the very very end when I thought you had to round the buoy at the finish too... Pays to pay attention at the skippers meetings.... Good fun.. nice party... nice people.

Just got back from a really fun surprise little wave session at 1000 Peaks... was talking with Maka. We were chatting about our Maliko experiences and both mentioned that unreal huge turtle spotted out there. The biggest darn turtle I've ever seen. Swear it was as big as a Volkswagen... . Was wondering who else may have encountered it. Maka said it came up right next to her and stared with one eye right at her. Said it was the eriest thing.. The stuff of legends.. (or tall turtle tales)

I remember there was some discussion about this awhile ago... Was looking at an ad for a graphic artist and found this... Ryfel's Aloha Surf Guide is your official guide to surfing in Hawai'i. You will find the most comprehensive Hawaiian surfing information; history, boards, wave anatomy, tide charts, surf basics, spots, lingo, and more .. all in one convenient and fun booklet. Free to all tourists and residents, the Aloha Surf Guide will find a new and untapped market .. eager new surfers, and the curious afraid-to-try tourists. The directory, surf spots, and tide charts will become coffee table material for locals as well. http://surfing101.net/Kinda scary...

I noticed my old F-16 had tons and tons of black paddle marks and decided to try and clean them off... Had a Mr Clean Magic Eraser sponge and thought it might work... Wow.. it took all the marks off really easily and doesnt seem to have hurt the gloss coat at all... Pretty cool... Board almost looks new. Says not to use on high gloss surfaces but think it ya dont rub too hard, its ok.

I'm getting ready to buy a dedicated downwind paddle.. Currently using my old Kialoa and was told it was too short.. Sooooo.... I dont have the actual length info now but it basically comes right to the end of my palm with arm extended. What is everyone else using? We've had this discussion regarding surf paddles but not downwind I think. ps... was told by my coach that I really need a lot of work on my technique... Yeah, I kinda figured that. Maybe one day I can keep up with Chan... or at least keep her in sight

Just a thought... on these Maliko runs with varying skill sets of riders, maybe staggering the starts might be a good thing. I know that I found a bit of reassurance when a couple of OC-1's went by me on my first Maliko run. I was not sure of my line and had lost everyone within the first couple miles. Actually that day I think I got lapped by a couple guys doing doubles.. Sheesh.. Still, would make sense for the fast guys to start in the back and overtake the slower riders. Since most of us wear GPS's it wouldnt matter as far as timing.
Also was nice to have Bill finishing up that offshore Kihei run just ahead of me. Again, I wasnt totally sure of where to land and was cool to follow someone without having to have anybody try and wait for me. Thats nearly impossible in stong winds. And not much fun.
Just a thought..
