In light of all the hubaloo recently on here, I'd thought I'd lighten it up some. This is a fun place to do anagrams. Put inyour name or whatevers and see what comes out. Stand Up Zone's anagram name is UP AND ON ZEST. How fitting. http://www.deanjackson.dj/nameanagramI suggest you input "stand up zone" + your avatar name on here. I did a couple of the regulars on here and there's some really funny ones. I won't ruin the surprise for them.

In light of recent broken boards and discussion on construction methods, would it be possible to have a sample of a cut cross section of one of your actual boards to send to retailors to show how and what type of construction is in your boards? I think this would play a big part to the consumer as to what they would buy. One board or two to sacrifice to demonstrate construction methods on what you beleive in is worth a lot. You should be able to get a lot of 2" cross sections form one board. Just a suggestion, Thanks! Honolii

Oh, I forgot to add, custom painted that is. As Blane's custom Balsa veneer boards is the "lust for" board to have at the moment, I can't afford nor wait for one. So I "attempted" to replicate a faux Balsa paint job on my new PSH 9'3" Ripper. Taped up the rails to the pinline and let the rattle can fly. Scuffed up the deck, used a light beige enamel for the base. After dry, went and did some grain effect with a darker color using an old brush. Drew on some black slat lines, then sprayed acrylic enamel clear over the whole shebang. Also did a mosaic with the deck grip. Blocked out the shapes on the deck and sprayed colors to act as the negative lines of the mosaic. Can't wait to use it tomorrow, south swell!!!!! Eh' Blane! Made you look! Major thanks to Blane and the PSH crew for the deal, and to Shawn at Maxfield Provisions for the colored scraps. AWESOME Aloha on this board. Honolii Faux Balsa paint job. I FINALLY got down to making some SUP paddles after thinking about it for the last 2 years. This is my first time and I want to thank all of those who posted on their experiences on making them on here. I've taken every bit of advice and tips and used them with my ideas. These are my first two prototypes and will use it to refine my next ones I do. My clamping jig. I can move the blade angle wedge to adjust for different legths, and also change it for different blade angles. The jig is upside down in this shot. Also clamping 2 shafts at a time. I used poplar and douglas fir to make the laminated shaft. These are all trimmed and ready for handle and blade glue ups. Blade glue up using basswood and some scrap koa I had lying around. Koa handles all shaped and sanded. Blade all shaped and sanded. One is 7 3/4" wide, the other is 8" wide. The bend. Glassing with 4 ounce glass and epoxy. One layer on both sides of the blade and on shaft up to the bend. I painted on the graphics as one is for my fiance' and the other for my nephew. The Hawaiian tattoo design is his family crest. Finished blades. After 2 coats of epoxy, I sanded and top coated with automotive clear acrylic enamel. I haven't buffed it out yet. Koa handle detail. Side view double bend detail. The blade angle is a slight 8-10%. All in all I enjoyed the process of making anything wiht my hands. I do some woodwork so I have experience working with wood. Main tools for shaping were sander, grinder with sanding disk, belt sander, small block plane, small drum sander on drill, router for handle. The shaft has a nice flex to it that I like. I have not yet taken it out for a test. Will get back on feedback when done. Weight was 2.2 pounds on a digital bathroom scale. I don't know how accurate that is. Thanks for looking. Would love some feedback, advice, constructive criticism, hell, even negative criticism as I learn fomr it all. Aloha, Honolii

Out for a session this morning at my usual spot and one of the local surfers, who does not SUP, paddles up to me and tells me, "Eh, I bringing in Hypers. I the only guy who can get'em. Top of the line stuff." I tell him, "There's already another guy that has been selling that shit from his truck." He goes, "Nah man, I going be the only guy to bring'em in. These boards high performance." I reply, "I already ordered one from Blane Chambers. Thanks, though." He goes, "Who?" I reply, "Paddle Surf Hawaii." He still has that look on his face. I just laughed and paddled away.

Aloha, Anybody know where can I find a good board bag for a PSH 9'3" ripper, either online order or on Oahu? I'm going to need it to transport board inter-island. Is that offer and availability on Standup Zone bags still good? Thanks! Honolii

Aloha, Just got a GoPro and thought I'd give it a go. This is my third video I've ever edited with Movie Maker and a different perspective of what can happen when you SUP. Will post other short clips later. Thought this would kind of go together with the Underwater SUP one prior to this. Hope you enjoy! Honolii

I went down to check out the lava flow hitting th eocean the other week here on the Big Island. As I looked out to the ocean I was thinking how cool it would be to SUP right out where the lava is enterring the ocean. The only thing is Puna coast has very little entry way into the ocean. It is mainly high lava cliffs. Nearest boat ramp is about 30 minutes away by boat. Plus the seas are pretty rough on these parts. Anyway Leleo folks beat me to it. Check this out. http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080404/SPORTS17/804040360/1032

It's been flat here on the east side of the Big Eye. To fuel my stoke I browsed the net (surfing is for real waves, not the net. LOL!) for pics and articles SUP related. Found a throve of SUP photos on www.supphotos.comA lot of hardcore SUP surfing by the top guys. This sequence of Kainoa at Pipe just does it for me. Mind buzz!!!! http://www.supphotos.com/gallery.php?gid=111

After reading a lot about broken paddles and thinking about materials and so on these are my thoughts. Coming from a mt. biking background lightening bikes (steel tubes, aluminum, carbon) without sacrificing strength led to different manufacturing process for different material. Steel tubes were butted, forming the tubes thicker at high stress point and thinning out at low stress points. Aluminum tubes were ovalized, and in some cases triangulized, in the high stress areas through hydroforming(aluminum tubes are put in a form and high pressured oil are pressured within the tube to "balloon" the tube to the form shape). Carbon fiber layup, of course, made sense on thickness and design specific to the stress level at a given area. The problem I see with paddle manufacturing today is using stock tubes with same thickness throughtout. If you want it beefier, you get a thicker tube, which means heavier. Somehow if manufacturers are able to make their own shaft specifically for paddling, beefing up the high stress areas and keeping the low stress areas thinner we would see less snapped paddles and more happy customers. This could be done both with aluminum and carbon fiber. I understand the cost effective ratio in manufacturing limits companies in doing so, but with the projected growth in the sport I am hoping someone will step up to the plate. Whoever does, I'm sure you'd have a bandwagon of buyers wanting the bestest and latest as atested on this forum. In the long run, I beleive if you have a great product, it will pay for itself and then some.
