Classifieds / 3 SUPs for sale
« on: October 06, 2023, 06:29:53 PM »
Three SUPs for sale.  All well used but still a lot of life left.  The Fanatic sup once ended up on a jetty and sustained damage that was crudely repaired but it’s a great board for flat water paddling and riding waves.
Both Jimmy Lewis boards are great for surfing waves of all sizes.

Jimmy Lewis Destroyer 8’10 x 31’, 145L - $770
Jimmy Lewis SuperFrank 8’6 x 32’, 141L - $770
Fanatic Allwave 9’2 x 31.5, 150L - $320

All boards have Railsaver installed.

Location: Long Branch, NJ

Sessions / Chilly early morning high tide session in Northern NJ
« on: September 28, 2022, 07:51:42 AM »
Hi all,

Got out at first light hoping to catch some small clean waves before the tide got too deep.  Air was cold, water warm, beautiful morning.

It appears today will be the last clean day (wind wise) for about a week.

Sessions / L41 ST Demo session
« on: June 22, 2021, 11:39:13 AM »

Hi all,
I’ve been interested for some time in the L41 sups and several zoners seem to rave about them.  NorthJerzsurfer kindly loaned me his L41 ST for a couple days, this morning was the my first demo I figured I’d dust off the Soloshot and see if I could have success with that often flaky device. (I watched a you tube video to refresh my memory on calibrating the soloshot and it worked like a charm).  I was messaging with Dusk Patrol and OspreySup about L41’s so I thought I’d write a review of my experience.  I wasn’t sure if this should go in the Gear or Session section so sorry in advance.

Me: 57 yrs old, 5’9”, 200lbs or so.  Location: Long Branch, NJ. Sup: L41 ST 8’ x 30.5” 129L
Conditions: High tide breaking close to the beach very inconsistent, 2-3 ft as per Surf Captain.

Right away what I did not like was the SUP handle, it’s the kind you can only fit your fingertips, this is especially not good if you surf cold winters.  This is the shortest and lowest volume sup I’ve surfed and while I didn’t feel completely stable I was fine when paddling for waves.  The board paddles well and catches waves easily (I think better than my JL boards), I was really surprised.  Other L41 owners mentioned the speed on a wave; I will say I felt it was too fast, I did not feel in control on steeper waves. I’m guessing one may adjust to this with regular use.  At about 1:43 in the video I try to slow down by dragging my paddle.  About 3:29 of the video I kicked out but would have like to do a rebound off the lip but again the speed was too fast for me.  On the flatter mushier sections it was easier to redirect and weave the board which felt good.  No big deal but I did notice a hum/whistle coming from the fins.  Now I’ll admit I tend to ride further up on the board and have that staggered stance maybe this lends to less control on a sup with speed?  Not sure.

Overall, a fun sup.  I’d probably go a ½’ to an inch wider but the length on this board seems fine.  It would not be my primary board, I think it’s good for mushy days and I already have the Superfrank for those conditions.  Bigger steeper days I think I’d be more comfortable on my Destroyer, I feel going slower allows more maneuvers under control.  Again tho this is one session in not so great conditions.  One thing is for sure it’s great when you can demo a board, thanks again NJS!

Hi all,

Me and the wife will be in Oregon the 3rd week of July.  It’s a long shot but anyone in the central coast area have a spare SUP to rent/lend for a few days?

Momentum surf company no longer rents SUPs, I’m waiting to hear back from pura vida surf shop.

Thanks,

Ken

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Black Project Surge paddle
« on: December 28, 2020, 11:45:39 AM »
I bought this paddle several weeks ago and after many surf sessions I figured I’d give a report.  Since the pandemic and working from home I’ve been doing a lot of sup surfing. After a session my right shoulder was suddenly aching.  Ive had two left shoulder surgeries so the familiar pain was concerning.  I’ve been using the werner rip stick 71”, I’m 5’9”, 205lb.  I’ve had this paddle for several years and think it’s great also very durable.  I was a bit in panic mode sup surfing is my main activity and did not want to take time off to heal.  I have an older Quickblade Kanaha that awhile back I had cut to 70” but the handle loosened up during a session so I put it aside...feeling desperate I got a glue stick put the handle back on and was ready for the following day.  While going 1” shorter gave me immediate relief to my shoulder I found the QB paddle required me to think about how the blade was entering the water, think about my technique which I didn’t like.  The QB blade is fairly flat and not forgiving (technique wise IMO) like a more dihedral blade.  So I started researching paddles and at first thought of another shorter RipStick with a smaller blade but they are sold out.  Then the obvious choice of Kenalu mana but I have to be honest while I’ve cut and shortened a couple of my paddles I prefer a new paddle that’s ready to go out of the box; I guess I’m a bit intimidated cutting a new paddle.  That being said if I had not just replaced a hot water heater and had cash in hand I would and maybe will in the future buy a kenalu.  So I started looking at the Black Project Surge.  Definitely not as many reviews as the kenalu but I remembered a comment on this site about how light the paddle is but mentioned the slim shaft and blade size 77 max. as only option available which seemed to conflict with the website.  The BP website has an extensive resource page which may have some outdated information so I decided to send an email asking for clarification...I sent the email early Monday (I’m in NJ) around noon my phone rang the caller ID said Maui.  It was a rep or owner (English accent named Chris) called to talk about the paddle, cleared everything up.  I will say the paddle is expensive but BP uses Klarne as a payment method, you can pay it off over 8 weeks with no interest.  So I purchased the paddle that same Monday received it via fedex on Wednesday the same week.  Cut to size at 69”, blade size L = 85.  My RipStick blade is 90.

When I took the paddle out of the box I was immediately struck by how light it was by far the lightest paddle I’ve owned.  During my first session the light weight felt weird but the smaller blade and shorter length was an immediate relief for my shoulder and the pronounced dihedral blade felt much better entering the water.  Now after several weeks of use I like the paddle a lot, paddles really well, of course durability is to be determined but it appears well made. And most importantly my shoulder feels good.  One thing I need to say  about a couple comments on another thread on this site mentioning the shaft is slippery.  I’m not sure if BP recently updated the shaft but mine has small ridges and has the best grip of any paddle I own(ed) this includes QB, Werner and Kialoa.

Happy New Year,

Ken

This weekend had amazing weather and a fun small swell to go with it!  This video is from this morning, yesterday had similar conditions but the schools of bunker fish were absolutely huge!  They were so active it looked like it was pouring rain from the splashing at the surface of the water.  Yesterday was the day I wish I had a gopro attached just to film the activity above and below the water.

Hi all,

Some fun waves this morning was dark when I arrived couldn't see the bubbles on the tripod to see if it was level, no issues with the soloshot.  Nice way to start the day.  Riding 8'10 JL Destroyer.

Hi all,
I broke out the Soloshot3 this morning for the first time in awhile.  Here at the Northern Jersey shore we've had a pretty good run of waves for this time of year.  I should have dusted the soloshot off last week or so but ironically when the surf is good I get amped and don't feel like dealing with the thing even though most of the time only 5 min or so is wasted.  As always this device is fickle it didn't track me at first so I turned it off/on then when I thought it was tracking me it turns out the first 10min of video it's filming over my head then it corrects itself go figure.  The forecast is for some swell in the coming days so i'm hoping to film some good waves.

Me: 5'9ish, 205lb, 56years old.  SUP: Jimmy Lewis Destroyer 8'10 x 31

Sessions / Heat wave session #2 with Zoner guest
« on: July 20, 2019, 12:00:52 PM »
Another gutless summer session but this morning NorthJerzSurfer joined me surfing a used custom sup for the first time which I thought was impressive considering the waves on offer.  NJS makes his appearance about 1:38 of the video.  It was fun chatting and sharing waves.

We’ve had a long stretch of small to no waves.  I have surfed some lately but have not setup the Soloshot.  I wanted to test it since the last few times were fails.
Water is warm nice to be trunking it for a change.  there are tons of sting rays swimming just below the surface.  It was cloudy and cooler early am but forecast is for HOT weather the next couple days around these parts.  Apparently, the waves forecasted are remnants of TS Barry.
