Downwind and Racing / Fin choice for surfing (turning) DW board
« on: May 21, 2015, 09:00:56 AM »
Hi all, Having had few legit DW days and zero legit surf for weeks now (months maybe) I've taken to surfing the SIC14V2 in the Miami beachbreak surf/mush. As we know from a prior thread (http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,25211.30.html) it's actually a lot of fun but I was wondering if changing fins would improve the board's maneuverability ("loosen up the back some"). Specifically, would swapping out the stock weedless (http://www.sicmaui.com/fins) for the attached fin have the desired effect? If so, why not use it all the time, even in legit DW conditions? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Gear Talk / Any thoughts on C4 Carbon X-Wing paddle?
« on: March 17, 2015, 01:30:25 PM »
I picked one up for a song a while back when C4 help sponsor a friend's Bimini-to-Miami paddle and it's just been sitting there for 2.5 yrs. I like the shaft diameter but I'm not sure about the blade. Does anyone know anything about what I have here?

Technique / Training lung capacity for SUS hold-downs
« on: February 18, 2015, 12:06:38 PM »
The POV video linked at "Caught inside at Todos Santos" (which is great, btw, thx Leave) reminds me of something I've been wondering about. Surfing in Florida has its own set of challenges but long hold downs is not one of them. A trip to Costa Rica last Summer opened my eyes some and I expect that my first ever to Hawaii this coming Summer will open them further.

Do any of you, more experienced surfers have any suggestions about training or exercises I can be doing to increase breath holding during the longer hold downs? I've always been pretty comfortable in the water (scuba, triathlons in the 80's, etc) and do my best to try and stay relaxed but would like to train basic lung capacity. I remember seeing a video of Laird holding a 44lb plate at the bottom of a pool. Is that something to be doing?

PS. 5 cracked ribs and the resulting hemo/pneumo-thorax 20 months ago didn't help lung capacity.

SUP General / Anyone else's fingers cramp while away from the paddle?
« on: February 02, 2015, 01:44:01 PM »
It's not a painful thing and it seems to happen while I'm at work, primarily the middle finger on my left hand (I'm right handed). I can straighten it out just fine but am wondering if it's a sign of anything more significant to come down the road.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Tracking Paddling-Related Stats
« on: November 05, 2014, 12:08:51 PM »
Anyone found an easy way to track paddling related statistics, like cadence and distance and speed per stroke?
Suunto makes a pretty decent GPS watch that syncs wirelessly to a number of different devices, including a "pod" that attaches to your running shoe. Why not try sticking one on a paddle?
Has anyone here tried anything similar to this?

Downwind and Racing / Rail Tape on a DW Board?
« on: September 15, 2014, 02:12:56 PM »
Given (what I believe to be) the overwhelming force of planing on a wave and the typical victory-at-sea conditions of surfing on the Florida East Coast, I happily have Rail Saver Pro tape on my surf board (Naish Hokua). I just took delivery of a 14' SIC Bullet V2 and was about to put the same tape on when I paused to ponder what the effect might be of putting tape on my new board, especially considering that, while I'm waiting for the tropical storm-related DWs we get in Miami during hurricane season, the SIC will double as a flatwater board.

Does anyone have any insight on the actual drag caused by the tape? Will the drag created by the tape have a meaningful effect on the board's slipperiness through the water?

SUP General / Thruster v Quad
« on: September 05, 2014, 12:15:31 PM »
Can someone state in layman's terms what the "book" says are the general differences b/w surfing a thruster and a quad set up? What conditions favor one over the other?

I’ve heard (and read) some people say that thrusters provide more hold and that quads are generally faster, but at the expense of hold. Others appear to say the opposite. While we’re at it, I can pretty much guess what looseness, release, hold, and slide mean but I’m not so sure I’m understanding what drive, lift, and acceleration mean in this context.

Any help would be appreciated.

SUP General / Adjusting the paddle length DURING the 'paddle.'
« on: August 09, 2014, 12:47:29 PM »
Something I've been thinking about for a while. Many of us use a longer paddle for flat water, a shorter one for surfing and maybe even something in between for long paddles in choppy conditions. A common paddle in Miami is to circumvent Key Biscayne or parts of Miami Beach, 7-15 mile paddles where you spend some time in open ocean and some time in protected bay waters. I use an adjustable Werner paddle and find myself adjusting the length of the paddle during the 'paddle,' shorter paddle (and stroke) when conditions are confused and choppy and going longer when conditions clean up. Or short to surf but a little longer when I want to paddle from one peak to another. Varying the stroke a bit also helps put off the fatigue a bit. Anyone else do this?

SUP General / Looking for Video of young polynesian oc paddler
« on: December 05, 2011, 11:03:59 AM »
Within the last 1-2 months, someone embedded a link within one of their posts of a young polynesian paddler who won his race going away (I believe the race was a 2011 championship, but I could be wrong). The competitors were paddling seated so I think it was an OC race. The kid must have been 15-17 and his paddling was amazingly powerful. The text discussed how the kid's stroke actually deweighed the boat. If this rings a bell with anyone, I'd appreciate some help re-locating that link. I apologize in advance for the self-serving post but I've spent far too long already looking for this video.
