Foil SUP / 6.5 pedestal and 17.5 flip tip?

I need a new mast for my Iwa, which I love, and my NL220, which I am still getting the hang of.  The pedestal tail combo that I have read about most often is the 6.5 and the 17.5 flip tip.  I would love any opinions on if this is the best combo and what the difference is between different tails and different fuselage lengths.  Thanks, Chris

Foil SUP / Big waves are fun but expensive.

I  had a chance to ride some big slopey waves, maybe 8 foot, breaking on an outer bar then backing off.  My 7'10" Takuma made digging into them easy.  I think Beasho is right about using a bigger board for bigger waves.


One wave stood up and barreled.  You have to be carful with these things.

It was a lot of fun but I will definitely be thinking twice before I go out in bigger surf again.





This is the fourth time I have had this view of a foilboard in just over a year of foiling.

Foil SUP / Has anyone gone too short with their board?

 If you have a board under 6'6", how happy are you with your decision?  Would you change the size if you could? 

I am trying to decide between 6'4'' and 5'11" for a new board.  Five days after getting my 6'10" L-41 I already wanted something smaller, so I am thinking the 5' 11" this time.

Foil SUP / Track failure

Track came loose from everything except bottom skin.  When I move the mast back and forth the cassette rocks inside.  I opened the top and discovered that there is only eps between the cassette and the top skin.  I am thinking I will gorilla glue a chunk of 6 lb pour foam that is already cured between the cassette and the top skin.

SUP General / How to deal with leak under pad?

Two hours after my surf, I pulled my board out of the car in 90 degree weather, and heard air squeezing through a small hole.  I can see bubbles coming out of one of the holes in the pad for foot straps.  I have never used the straps, its a Takuma foil/windsurf hybrid.  Do I remove the whole pad to find the crack(s)?  Is there a trick to getting a foot pad off?  Can I save it? 
I just checked and three hours after coming out of the water it is still leaking air.  Thanks.

Foil SUP / Strengthen aluminum mast?

Despite being careful I've bent my third mast since October.  Both Takuma and Naish.  I have one straight mast left.  I'm not buying anymore.   

They always bend in the first 4 or 5 inches below the plate.

Can I wrap it with carbon to add strength? Will epoxy bond with aluminum?  Does it need to? 

What if I poured a liquid mix of epoxy and 1/4th inch chopped carbon fiber down the middle, filling it up?

Foil SUP / Is my new pump defective?

I bought this new 50 dollar pump, added oil, opened inlet, outlet and oil exhaust and turned it on.  When I put my finger on the inlet I can't feel much suction.  I put a fingernail size piece of paper over the inlet and there was not enough suction to hold it there.  I was expecting the same result as blocking the inlet on my home vacuum.
Do I need to return this pump or does it need to be a closed system and have some time to build up vacuum?

Foil SUP / How much carbon needs to wrap around the leading edge of mast?

I am ordering some 400 g biax and 200 g uni for the mast and fuselage which I will make as one piece with a wood core.  Does the carbon that wraps around the leading edge of the mast add strength, or is it just to smooth it out?  How much of my carbon needs to wrap around?  Will the 400g/12 oz biax bend around, or should I add some thinner stuff to my order?
Maybe I should mention I have no experience so any help is appreciated.  My Fusion 360 skills are coming along so I think its time for me  :)to learn to work with composites.

Foil SUP / How do I make socket to fit wing onto fuse?

Inspired by Supuk I am trying to make a wing for my Takuma.  I have no 3d printer so I tried  wrapping a test object with fiberglass.  It came out kind of loose.  Maybe if I had a vacuum system it would have been better. 
I am also considering trying putty.  Any ideas?
 I am a complete noob and have spent some time trying to think this through but decided it might be easier to just learn by doing.

Foil SUP / Takuma Hybrid Windsurf Sup board BX 7'10" review

138 liters.  7'10" by 30" by 4.5"\

Got this to replace 8'2" Vesl surfing sup that is around 125 liters.  With the Vesl I cannot balance well enough when I am paddling around, especially if there is any chop.
 
Today was very choppy but the Takuma was much more stable so I was fine.  The extra foam made it much easier to catch waves,  but the angle of the foil also helped.  With my old board there is a small area where if I have my weight there the foil engages a little to help when catching a wave.  The area is toward the back where the board is less stable.  The Takuma was both more stable when my weight was back and it also had a larger "sweet spot" where the foil helped get into waves.  I am guessing the excess rocker in the old board changed the angle of the foil more as I shifted my weight forward and back.

There is a lot of upturn in the nose.  When I saw it I thought they had over done it but it worked great.  Between that and the 138 liters I was able to repeatedly continue riding after falling off foil.

One unexpected bonus was when I got up on foil it felt way more solid.  I was able to muscle the board around more when things weren't quite right.  I think the flatter top helped a lot, also the pad had good grip.  The guy at Houston Kiteboarding told me that the flat top would help with balance.  I didn't understand at the time but now I do.
Also I like to move my feet around some when on foil and it was much easier with this board. If I moved my feet to a bad spot I was able to keep adjusting until I was happy.
