The Shape Shack / drain hole cover?
« on: July 17, 2019, 03:26:52 AM »
does drain hole cover works (is efficient)?
does water really enters standing area slower/less in dugout SUPs?
any experiences with NSP or Infinity dugouts?

Gear Talk / adding channel to bottom of a race SUP
« on: June 04, 2019, 12:50:57 AM »
Thinking of adding channel to bottom of a race 14' SUP... currently bottom is flat without concaves. the board is already quite fast and stable.
I assume the simplest would be square - as SIC RS last 2/5 of a length? Any thoughts?
It's additional (not necessary) part of a project as board is dug-out but the water does not drain properly from standing area as it is deepened and not tilted to the tail. not drain holes.
1.option - just adding drain holes
1.option - straighten out and tilt deck to the tail and add bottom chanel (this in not necessary but it would fun - transfer voulume from bottom to the standing area)
I dont know how much would be weight change and stability if the standing area is aprox 2cm higher.
photo - black lines - current situation (blue for water  ;) of course )
red lines - new situation
also drawn drain holes for 1.option
drawing just for info

Gear Talk / 2017 Riviera RP 14x23
« on: March 04, 2019, 02:24:51 PM »
I just want to say that there are used boards out there, which are still pretty good and cheap. And if not top (sponsored) paddler, or spend too much money on new board, you can do pretty well on used board too.
So, I bought used 2017 Riviera RP 14x23 for flat water paddling and light chop.
My biggest concern was stability due to V shape tail bottom, but it turned out to be just fine. Thanks to James who encouraged me and promo video where they mentioned long parallel side outline, which supposed to help stability. I was also surprised by its stability in upwind chop.
I did paddle it few times in almost perfect conditions, only water is still pretty cold - around 6C (42F), air around 14C (57F) and I could hold first 30min in pace of 9,6km/h (5,6mph) at 154/m heart rate. Other day, I could manage 2km paddling at 10,0km/h (6,2mph).
I used stock fin and KeNalu Mana82 paddle.

So, I should be fine this year speed and money wise and some of you too. Cheers!

The Shape Shack / redesign the flat deck into dugout?
« on: February 14, 2018, 03:08:21 AM »
Any comments if would work (volume/design/overall performance wise) if I would get used flat deck all-rounder (exp.404 V3, boga typhoon), cut/open top whole length and adding nose volume, side walls and adding tail volume by closing it (like One SUP EVO pro or Infinity downtown dug out) to create dug out all-rounder. Off course with some drain holes.
Reason: this way I would avoid making new rocker and bottom design, due to lack of knowledge.

The Shape Shack / custom 14' questions
« on: October 06, 2017, 05:02:29 AM »
Any thoughts would be appreciated:
For 14' flatwater custom SUP - How wide can you with tail to gain as much stability as possible and not jeopardizing speed to much? Is there any formula how much curve has to be in the second half of rail lenght? As pointy/'displacement' nose already pushes water away is there any curve even needed besides longer water line?
example:
14x24 with 15' square tail width  vs.
14x22 with 18' square tail width
Would 3' wider tail cause more drag than gain glide of a 2' narrower board?
From my limited experience, wider tail did not cause more drag and narrow board was simply faster...

Cheers, M

Gear Talk / custom 12'6''?
« on: July 02, 2017, 01:44:16 PM »
hi,
i would really appreciate some advices...
let's say i need fast 12'6'' for racing for fall race. i'm 85kg (187lbs) male and i paddle 2017SB sprint 14x23, and i believe it has perfect volume for me and love the board. 12'6'' sprint has much less volume and if i decide to go custom, how can i increase volume on 12'6'' board?
- maybe with 1-2cm thicker board- entire lenght (but compromise high side walls and therefore stability on side wind/wakes) ?
- maybe go wider (compromise speed)?
- maybe add volume in nose and tail (compromise water draining on dug-out tail)?
- just copy as much as possible and maybe compromising the water comming into dug-out area trough tail?
also original 2017 sprint 12'6'' has pretty wide 'funny' tail.
how different wide tail influence the speed. it gains stability, i guess. from the pictures, it seems that 2017 14'sprint was just cut 1,5ft  tail off
to get 12'6'' with some diagonally cut edges. how this edges work?
again, i would really appreciate some toughts
cheers!
