SUP General / Longboard size for smaller waves
« on: December 29, 2018, 09:25:50 PM »
Hi all belated Merry Christmas,

Had a good year on my new 9’ foamy, learned a lot.
The board is great for my noobie purposes but it needs a good push from behind to get moving well.  Which is all fine and good, wave count has increased dramatically.
But often here are smaller days where I just can’t get a ride . So thinking of maybe a hard longboard in the future. What is available for my wallet are 9-6  to 11-6 in 6 inch increments.  I’m 5’8, 150lbs/65kg.  Not looking for performance here just more rides in smaller conditions, maybe unbroken waves? How long should I go? Will a longboard help or should I just get bionic arms 🤗? Some choices, take a look if u can, thanks and have a Happy New Year!

Gear Talk / estimate blade size from a picture
« on: June 13, 2018, 10:52:59 PM »
I’m trying to estimate the area of a paddle blade from a picture .
The description says 36cm x 21cm , or  14” x 8” .
I’m guessing 80 sq.in. ??
Anyone care to make a guesstimate . Thanks if u can.

Hi all,

My current sup is a cheap soft top 9 foot by 28 inches by 4” thick , 138 liters. It’s a Perception Jetty. I’m 5’8” , 150 lbs with the suit on.  Had some decent sessions last year in tiny surf with it but overall it is a bit squirrelly and unstable for me in the surf. It’s really tiring on my legs trying to keep it stable before catching a wave, half the time I dump it and miss the wave. Of course a lot of this is me still being a beginner.  So it’s essentially a kids board, but was hoping I could get used to the small size and make it work.  My kids do love it , it also is a great longboard for everyone in the family, me too.

Due to my location and budget and car size there are limits to what I can upgrade to.  I found another cheap foamy classic longboard shape , that is also 9 foot but 32 inches wide , 4 1/2 thick, 160 liters.  The 9 foot boards fit perfect in the minivan, this is a huge factor on choice unfortunately.

My big question is : do you think the extra 4 inches in width and 22 liters in volume will possibly give me the addded stability needed ?  I know this is a tough question and I can’t try these boards out.   I really dont want to go 9’6”- 10’ .thanks if you can help!

Gear Talk / Blade size for very light surf?
« on: July 26, 2017, 04:50:33 PM »
Hi again all,

Would like to know your most recent thoughts on blade size for light surf.
I'm 150lbs/65 kg , newbie, on a 9x28 x 4 cheap foam board.
I'll be out in very light 1-3 foot mushy surf mostly.
Should I go with 100 sq.in. Or 90 or 80 or not worry about it too much cause it doesn't really matter? But I'm looking forward a little bit to when I hopefully progress and can keep my blade, not have to buy a new one.
Right now I'm thinking about 100 to drive the short board quickly.

Thanks again!

Gear Talk / Under 1000g paddle about 150$?
« on: July 21, 2017, 03:38:04 PM »
Hi again all, another kooky question
As the title states:
What's a decent adjustable paddle under 1000 grams
And about 150$ ?
There are no brick and mortar shops anywhere near me
So I must hunt online and it is overwhelming
About 800 grams would be nice
If you could throw some names at me off the top of your head that would be nice
Thanks much!

Gear Talk / Foamy for beginner?
« on: July 13, 2017, 03:47:02 PM »
Hi again all,

I was originally going for an inflatable but have switched ideas to a foamy.
Still against a hardboard.  If you have Any knowledge or criticisms of these boards it would be welcomed
I think this is about the most  I can afford to pay.
Btw I'm 5'8"/172.  150lbs/65kg

Like this 10 footer, volume is 170L, would this be too much?
Really like this one

And this 9 footer, volume should be right on for beginner at 150 L
http://www.on-s.info/sup/2016truewave_soft/ssr90.html

This seems like a glorified Costco board, I'd be happy with it
http://www.buzzz.jp/products/stormblade/paddle.html

This is definitely the same as Costco board
Sucks that the price is 2X or more
http://www.buzzz.jp/products/stormblade/ssrsurf.html

So that's a rundown of the cheapest foamies in Japan
Still can't find a Costco Wavestorm here unfortunately

Thanks for reading,

Gear Talk / Help me choose an inflatable please!
« on: June 21, 2017, 11:28:47 PM »
Hello all, hope this in line with the forum guidelines,

First post here. I'm a newbie prone surfer and am looking for an iSup for light conditions, 1-3 foot . Don't plan on too much real flat water touring, also my kids will probly wanna use it.  Definitely want an inflatable for safety and portability.
I'm an ex canoeist/kayaker so I think I'll take to the paddle well. Also in good physical shape age 52,   5 foot 8 /  172cm.  150lbs, /65 kg.

I'm looking at this list, and my budget is around 600USD$
https://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/10256-the-best-inflatable-sup-boards-in-the-world

So the short list for now is

iRocker

Solcstice Bali

Vilano Navigator

Isle Airtech 10

What do you think of these choices?
Any others that you'd recommend for a newbie for surfing mainly?

Thank you very much for looking and I hope to ask many more questions in the near future!
