Gear Talk / Quad fin size
« on: August 31, 2019, 03:05:09 PM »
I'm going to try switching from a 2+1 fin setup to quad, and I'm wondering which size fins would be best for a SUP in the 9'4" - 9'7" range. I'm interested in the Futures Legacy Quad set, which is either F6 (4.56" high sides & 4.05" high rears), or F8 (4.64" high sides & 4.15" high rears). Not much difference?

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Maui Sports Adventures
« on: October 23, 2013, 07:27:47 PM »
Wanted to give a shout out to Maui Sports Adventures and the Schweitzer family. My Mrs and I were on Maui for a few days and went out SUS a couple days with Zane's brother Matt. Great teacher who got Sheryl (lots of flat water paddling experience) super comfortable in the waves. She really came into her own under his guidance, and got tons of waves all on her own after Matt gave her the skill and confidence. He was a big help to me as a goofy on lefts (being from NorCal, I never surf them!). The whole family is great, and they had tons of killer Starboards to play with. At home I went from 10'3" to 9'4", but did well on a 9" Starboard. Big turtles watched us surf, which was an added bonus.

Gear Talk / Board bag size
« on: May 07, 2013, 07:18:38 PM »
How much longer than a SUP surfboard is the ideal length for a board bag? I don't want it super tight, but I also dislike floppy excess length. I'm guessing 3-4" longer than the board?

Gear Talk / New King's Crossover
« on: May 06, 2013, 10:21:39 AM »
Leon the board guy brought my new board up from San Diego to Santa Cruz this last week, and I was able to go out for a couple hours on Sunday morning. This King's Crossover model is 9'4" x 30" x 4.25" with stepped rails.

Surf was pretty poor, and I'm going to be on a learning curve going from a 10'3" x 30.5" x 4.5" board, so I was in the water instead of on the board much more than I'm used to. When I did catch waves, the board was very responsive. Can't wait to get more hours on it ASAP!

Pictures aren't the best, since I just took quick snaps with a phone camera before heading out.

SUP General / Wind levels
« on: March 18, 2012, 08:49:08 AM »
What would you consider to be low, medium or high wind levels for a beginner SUPer? Winds this morning are 17-19 mph. I was going to go out with a friend whose done SUP flat water a couple times, but never in windy conditions. The estuary where we would go is exposed, and it winds around so there's no way to go upwind first and downwind home.

I was thinking under 10 mph would be "low," but don't have an idea about where things start getting difficult since I've just paddled and never went online to learn what mph I just experienced.

Sessions / Marin
« on: March 03, 2012, 03:38:12 PM »
Just got back from a 5 mile paddle out to & around Marin Island in San Rafael Bay (a northern section of SF Bay). 66 degrees, board shorts & rash guard. Sunny with a light breeze. Just a gorgeous day to be out on the water, and I was joined by a woman who was new to SUP but competes on a local outrigger team. She kept me going at a good pace.

No wonder Marin is so expensive; it's beautiful up there. I crossed the Golden Gate on my way back to the SF peninsula and there was zero fog. I love looking into the bay at Alcatraz and out to the ocean and the Farallon islands.

I didn't even mind going out on a basic rental beater, but it'll be even better when my new board arrives next week!

Sessions / Day on the Bay
« on: December 02, 2011, 07:17:56 PM »
Had a day off today and weather was so nice I went up to Bluerush Boardsports in Sausalito. Took out a rented Surftech board for a couple hours on Richardson Bay. High sixties, sun shining and the water was pretty smooth for the bay. Beautiful views of SF and Alcatraz, lots of sea lions and big pelicans dive bombing for fish. Makes me happy to live in the SF Bay Area.

Gear Talk / Do you carry a knife when non-surf SUPing?
« on: October 31, 2011, 11:50:36 AM »
I started SUPing on pretty flat lakes, in marinas, etc., but now I'm spending more time on SF Bay and also plan to get out in the ocean a bit past the breaks. It's making me think a bit more about safety and what gear is worthwhile to have.

I've been checking out PFD's (NRS Ninja is leading the pack), and I'm starting to think that a small knife wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe it's overkill, but for a small investment it seems like it might be worthwhile. We also kayak a little, so a knife could do double duty.

Anyone here carry a blade when SUPing outside of the surf zone? If so, what knife? Do you prefer fixed blade or folding? I'm leaning towards a Spyderco Saver Salt. Great brand, no pointed tip that could cut accidentally, serrated blade. Some people swear by fixed blades when doing marine activities, so I'm still on the fence about that.

Gear Talk / Intro & thoughts on first boards
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:08:08 AM »
Hello forum members. I’m new to SUP this year, have been reading the forum for a month or so and this is my first post. Wife & I are renting/demo’ing boards for a while with the plan to buy when we decide what would work best for us.

I’m 5’8” & 165# and SG (my wife) is 5’ & 120#. I grew up bodyboarding (and still head out a few times a month) where as my wife’s love of the water comes from a bit of kayaking. We’re both loving SUP for fitness and cruising flat water, although the SF bay (which is minutes from our house) and just off the coast of Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay is rarely “flat.” Chop water is more accurate. SG has no interest in wave riding. I’d like that a bit (20% of my SUP time?), especially little beach breaks where there’s no line up to compete with (I’ll stick to the bodyboard at those spots).

Since SG likes cruising around/fitness, I thought a displacement board would be best for her. We both tried an Amundson TR and neither of us liked it. It was the 12’6” (the 11’4” wasn’t available to try) and we took it into the bay on a morning that had more wind than we would have liked. SG had an awful time maneuvering the board in any direction but downwind. Attempts to turn back into the wind found her getting halfway there and then pushed back around.

That same day we tried a 2010 Starboard Blend and a 2011 Drive. We both liked them and found them (even the Blend) to be easier to maneuver. Sure, the glide wasn’t as great as the TR, but what good is glide in only one direction (if it’s not a downwind race)? My initial thought was the Drive for me and the Blend for her. It seemed to have a bit more glide that day, although I’ve read a couple threads here where people have posted that they thought the Blend didn’t glide as well as the Drive despite its extra length (due to different rocker). Since SG’s pretty small, she found the Blend pretty difficult to carry but did OK with the Drive. I liked the idea of two different boards so if I wanted to go out in waves, I’d have a choice of sizes, but I’m not going to force her into a second-best board for her just so I can have a selection.

Since we liked the Drive, we also plan to seek out the Boga Mahina 10’6” to try up in the north bay, but we’re also very excited about planning a long weekend down to Santa Barbara to visit Stand Up Paddle Sports. Their own line of Australian pine boards look great and being a UCSB grad, I can’t wait to get back down there and SUP the area. Their Mahalo is 10’3” x 29.5”, which is right in the same wheelhouse as the Drive. SG’s even interested in trying their 9’6” x 30.5” Stoke model. She’s willing to give up some glide for easier carry & transport, as long as tracking is OK.

I’m happy to be here on the site and look forward to learning a lot.
