Came to CA. for the month from Texas and went to Cardiff for a session. I had been stung by something in New Mexico and my rt. thumb was the size of a sausage. I went to the restroom b4 going out and felt weak and dizzy. I thought it was because of toxin (from bite or sting) in my system. Came off a wave and went down, caught my leash, luckily,  and knew something was wrong. I was weak, out of breath and a little dis-oriented. Got to shore and couldn't carry my board up the beach. My buddy, Pat carried it up for me. Stayed in a chair for a couple of hours and decided I'd go out again. Immediately when I started paddling to get a wave, I was out of breath, weak and dis-oriented again. Got to shore and Pat carried my board up again. Sat on the beach for a couple of hours STILL DENYING what could be wrong. Told my wife I was going to paddle the lagoon. I started following her around the shore. I got 50 foot and she looked back at me and I shook my head. I couldn't go on.  I'm 68, 185 lbs. low cholesterol, pickleball 3 hrs. a day. Paddle 20 + mi. a week. etc, etc. etc.  I had to get a pacemaker because my heart rate was dropping to 30 BPM when I was increasing my energy level. The LORD was watching out for me. IF I hadn't been using my leash, I would have drowned. DR. Gimm in Laguna Hills = great Cardiologist AND he is a SUPer. 2 weeks and I'm paddling again.

Gear Talk / Board covers, adequate protection
« on: April 03, 2013, 09:30:19 AM »
We're planning some trips to FL and CA. this year. We will have a carbon MHL and Bark on top of our Honda Odyssey W\ Rail Grab. I have an OAM bag for the MHL but not for the Bark 12'6". After reading some info about losing a board on the freeway, I'm concerned about using a board bag. I do use two SS inserted tie down straps. Are the board covers such as Victory adequate to keep the carbon reaction to heat from warping, or should I just get another OAM day bag?

Has anyone tried this? Seems like it will work. It'll be just upside down on one stroke and always in front of your face

Technique / Wrong technique or Too fat for the board?
« on: September 17, 2012, 04:27:36 PM »
Okay I'm 68 5' 8" and 200 lbs. This weekend I placed 2nd in 50+ at Paddle for Humanity, Austin TX.
To me 2nd is the 1st place loser. In looking at the start of the race and the end my board, 12'6", looks VERY low in the water, in relationship to everyone elses. I have a tail wake and if I move forward I sink the bow. I know I'm going to get hammered and told to lighten up on the Texas BBQ. TIA

I'm in the blue and gold shorts (right side)

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Need Info help from Oahu Zoners
« on: June 26, 2012, 10:32:14 AM »
Changed our minds from Costa Rica trip to Oahu in April 2013. We're going to stay at Royal Gardens at Waikik, for a month.
Question is: Where should I rent a board and paddle from and cost for the month?
When I was stationed there, I used to surf Poplars, Queens, Makaha, and Ala Moana.
Poplars was my favorite because it was a long paddle out. Man, was that almost 50 years ago?
Anyway I appreciate any suggestions.

Gear Talk / "Splain" something to me about fins
« on: May 22, 2012, 06:32:29 PM »
What are the designations "M" and "K" for on fins? I would like to get a set of thrusters for my wifes Starboard Drive 10' 5" for the surf in La Jolla and San Diego. We'll be there for the month of July.

Gear Talk / Windsurf fins on SUP?
« on: May 02, 2012, 09:21:00 AM »
I'm a newbee at SUP and I was wondering " why I couldn't OR shouldn't try using WS fins on my Starboard Blend or Drive"? I mainly PB on flatwater. Would there be any advantage or dis-advantage to using WS fins. Would any of these fins work in the surf. I did use the search engine but did not find a suitable answer to using WS fins on SUPs.

SUP General / La Jolla in July
« on: April 24, 2012, 12:34:06 PM »
My wife and I have rented a condo in La Jolla for the month of July. We are bringing our SUPs and want to know of any events in the area OR RESTRICTIONS for SUPs. We have heard rumors about life jackets required etc. We're travelling from New Braunfels, TX. Where is the best place to SUP surf? I've prone-surfed but never SUP-surfed.

SUP General / Starboard Blend and Drive Purchase
« on: August 30, 2011, 05:59:08 PM »
I'm 5'9" and 200 lbs. long time windsurfer
The Blend is for me .
I'm getting the Drive for my wife 5'6" 130 lbs.
I have used the Carve 161L to paddle around on and it floated me fine.
My son thinks I may be getting my wife too small a board 160L. I have researched the Drive and it seems that 180lb. guys are having no problem with the flotation. What is your opinion?
She has been on a Fanatic 11' Fly with no problems.
