Technique / I want to ride a "true" shortboard...advice
« on: March 16, 2017, 05:46:00 PM »
Hey Everyone,

I have been itching to do some regular surfing. I feel as though my SUP surfing will put me in a better position to learn quicker than someone who has never ridden or read waves. That said, I have no interest in longboarding...have gone and its just not me. I want to be much more aggressive on a wave. Thus why my main SUP is a 7'8 x 26.5. I am in good shape...go to the gym 4-6 days a week 5'10 175lb 42yrs young. All that said, am I trying to bite too much off going for a shortboard?? I was thinking about a Hypto Krypto. I think a 5'10 would be ideal but then again maybe a 6'0 to have a little more foam??

For those that SUP surf and "prone" surf could you please chime in.

I know most would say start with a big board and work your way down but does that apply to someone who has surfed  the past 5 years in everything from knee high slop to solid 15ft peelers?

Thanks!

Hey Everyone,

I f*^ked up and left my paddle on my roof yesterday after surfing and now I am in need of a replacement.  :'(

I'm only using it for surfing so I am looking for a blade that the sq. inches stays in the 80's. (smaller the better)

I was using a Starboard Medium Carbon Enduro (would be stoked to replace it with the same) oval shaft.

Please let me know what you have and how much you want for it. Oh and I'm 5'10" and cut my paddle about forehead high so it doesn't need to be long.

Thanks for taking a minute to read.

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Cannibal/CoreVac SUP's by AJ
« on: December 22, 2013, 04:18:53 PM »
I have been looking for a short SUP for awhile now. I was going to get a 8'2" Starboard WP but it will not be shipping until March. That said I think I have found a more than suitable replacement. In truth it may be a blessing in disguise. Here is the the 8'0" x 30.5" x 4.25" Assassin. This is the shop demo. More pic's of their line is at https://www.facebook.com/CorevacCompositesUSA

I am in no way affiliated with the brand.

I am 5'10, 165lb., intermediate surfer.

Conditions were tough. 10-15mph side shore with ripping currents, very shifty peaks, close intervals and mushy (I know sounds dreamy!!)

I can not believe how incredibly stable this board is.

Hands down more stable than my 9'3 x 29.25"  It paddled well too. More time will be needed in better waves to see how it really goes. 1st impression was fast and loose.

With pad and thruster set up I'd say it feels about 15lb.

I now want to try the 7'6 they offer after seeing how incredible the 8'0" felt. Rep thinks the 7'6" is the ticket. Trying his  7'6" x 30" x 4.25" after the Holiday.

Really stoked on the Cannibal Assassin and to be supporting a local shaper.

Gear Talk / Anybody tried the 2014 Starboard WP?
« on: November 18, 2013, 01:13:46 PM »
I am waiting to demo one and the Airborn. If anyone has been on the 2014, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I have been on the 2013 8'10" WP and the 2013 8'5" Pro.

Also, if you happen to have pic's that would be killer.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi all,

I have decided to hold off on a LB style board with the winter swell in the near future. That said, I am interested in both the newly redesigned 2014  Starboard Wide Point and the 2014 Fish shaped Air Born(Both the 30" and the 31.5"). Both in Brushed Carbon. I am asking the advice as I would like to get an order in before stock my shops order ships.

I have gotten some information from Zoner's that rave about their Air Born's and encourage that is the direction to take. I am curious to hear others opinions about these two boards. I am curious if anyone has ridden the new shape for the 2014 8'2" WP w/123ltr.  I read somewhere maybe, Seabreeze that the changes made to the 8'2" WP came from the Air Born shape.

This board will be ridden in beach break on the East coast of FL. Conditions are usually less than ideal. If it get's big and clean I will ride a different board. This board will be for average day conditions, 2-6ft. range.

I have ridden the 2013 9.5 WP in BC and the 8.5 PR in wood. The 9.5 was just to see what the BC felt like and the PR was to try shorter.

I am38, 5'10, 165-175lbs. Intermediate skill level...getting better every session! Will also be 2 minutes to my local break starting in 2 weeks. Stoked for my new place!

Descriptions of both from the 2014 catalog:

8'2"X32"WIDE POINT
“Agility of a small board in a not-so-small body.”
This exceptionally stable shortboard for the heavier rider has been given a performance boost with modification of the outline, rails, concave and V. A flatter deck has countered the loss of volume to aid stability as well as providing a smaller, lighter board to throw around (swing weight).
Softer, thinner rails forward have improved acceleration and sensitivity, while thicker, squared off rails in the tail also improve drive when the back foot is planted. A deeper single concave also aids acceleration and speed, creating a straighter rocker through the middle of the board.
It’s a new highlight in our offering, become amazed!
“Mono-concave the entire length of the board”

7'10" x 31.5" Air Born
For those looking for ultra-high performance and stability in small surf, the Air Born 7’10’x31.5’’ has all the characteristics of the 30’’ board and more. We traded 1/10 of an inch thickness for 1.5 inches of width, keeping almost the same volume. This ultra-thin profile allows the board to flex more and store all the energy ready for release on your airs or cutbacks, while providing extra stability and control. This is the ultimate performance fish.
“Mono-concave merging to double concave with tail V”

7'10" x 30 Air Born An ultra-thin shape that enables you to rip even when the swell’s barely there. Everything about the Air Born has been designed to achieve the best performance in any mushy waves. Its fish-style outline offers great shortboard carving.
The thin, high-apex rail lets the water flow around it, accelerating the board on the rail. This gives you the feel of riding a steep barrel wave.
This ultra-thin profile allows the board to flex more and store all the energy ready for release on your airs or cutbacks.
“Mono-concave merging to double concave with tail V”

Here are there dimensions next to one another.

Thickness:

WP - 3.6"
AB (30) - 3.5"
AB (31.5) - 3.5"

Tail Width:

WP - 20.2"
AB (30) - 18.9"
AB (31.5) - 19.8"

Volume:

WP - 123L
AB (30) - 97L
AB (31.5) - 98L

So, if you have ridden any I would love some more feedback. Not saying what I have heard so far wasn't solid just hoping to hear a few more people chime in on it.

With many similarities between the boards which do think would be the best? How much ease of catching waves is lost by going down in Volume and length? Is 123L too much volume for a rider my weight? The Pocket Rocket felt a touch "corky" but conditions were horrible so tough to give it a fair shake.

Well, need to stop typing before this gets any longer and to start getting some Zoner feedback.

As always, Thanks in Advance!!!

Aloha,

Dan

Gear Talk / 14'er sold, time to add to the quiver!
« on: October 12, 2013, 02:09:42 PM »
Hello Everyone,

After much debate with myself I finally decided to sell me 14' Infinity. I love how it paddles but I just don't need that much board. That said, I unloaded it in less than 24hrs without having to advertise.YAY!! I probably could have gotten a few more dollars for it but it is going to a good home and they are stoked!

I have been surfing a 9'3" x 29.5" JP Australia(2009/2010 model yellow/red 128ltrs). It has very thinned out rails and a narrow tail. The learning curve has been steep but well worth it. One more season on it and I would like to move into a shorter lighter SUP but for now I am content.

I would however like to add a LB to my quiver. I want to get a board that I can paddle cruising with friends, catch the smallest bump and spend time on the nose.

The boards that I would like to try are:(no particular order)

BOGA:
11.2' x 30" Classic
10.6' x 29.5" Mahina

Naish:
11.4" x 30" Nalu GT

Laird/Pearson:
10.6" x 30" Surfer
11' x 30.5" Surfer

Starboard:
11.2" x 30" Blend

Kings:
Dauminator
SS Model
Knight
All in similar specs to the other boards.

Hobie:
10.6' x 30 CMLB Raw

Infinity or Boardworks:
Trout Model

After reading a bit on the Infinity Phoenix and Simmons SUP I am curious about them as an alternative option. How would they compare in flatwater and for nose riding?

I live in FL so getting to demo all the boards may prove to be a bit of a challenge. Any additional suggestions or info on models posted, please feel free to chime in.

I am 5'10" and my weight varies between 165/175.

Thanks in advance.

NorthEast / SUP friendly surf spots in Monmouth County to Seaside?
« on: July 07, 2013, 04:50:05 PM »
Hi all,

I am up from FL for a little bit( 3 more weeks) and would like to grab some waves without getting the stink eye if possible. I grew up in NJ but, was a skater in those days. I went to Monmouth Beach last week and found a break but no SUP's were in the line up. That said I did not paddle out. I am not looking for "Broadway" or your secret spot, just a place to go where it will be all good.

I checked out this cam http://njbeachcams.com/northern-new-jersey/monmouth-beach-cam-and-surf-report and then figured out it's location by using Google Earth. Turns out it is at Loch Arbour. Looks decent...anybody ever SUP it?

Thanks in advance for any/all help.

Gear Talk / Dremel, Wax or remove pad?
« on: December 04, 2012, 05:02:18 PM »
Hi All,

I picked up a 2010/2011 9'3" JP-Australia (the yellow and red one) Problem I have with it is the stock deck pad does not provide much grip. In fact it almost feels slippery.

I have done a bunch of searches and reviewed all the suggested techniques for removing deck pads. Most seem to think it is a pain in the A** while others seem to have very little issue. Top rated removal techniques seem to involve some combo of the following: Mineral Spirits, Goo Gone, WD-40, heat gun, scraper.

After reading the threads on removal - I am thinking about leaving that as a last resort.

My thought is to take a Dremel to the pad and make some crisscross lines or random groove spots. I don't think I can make it come out too pretty but I do think I could add some texture and thus increase the grip. Did a test on a scrap piece. It was difficult to keep the same pressure, resulting in varying depths of groove. Also, hard to make a straight line with the sander attachment.

I am concerned that by doing this that a couple of things may happen:

  • That the pad will take on water by cutting into the top layer. Not sure if it's closed cell or not, so this may not matter.
  • That if it doesn't work to create enough traction that it will make it a REAL nightmare to get the pad off easily. I could see the pad breaking up into small pieces as it is pulled off thus adding to the labor of removal.

Alternatively, I could just wax the pad a bit. Does anyone do this?

or

Should I just suck it up and remove the pad?

Gear Talk / Which wetsuit?...need to pull trigger sooner than later.
« on: November 28, 2012, 07:33:33 PM »
I posted a poll to figure out what paddlers prefer when it comes to entry. Now I am curious as to which suit.

These are the three I am considering.

Used Patagonia R2 used maybe 10 times which has been flushed with fresh H2O after each use - for $340

Brand new Matuse Tumo 2mm(2011 version) Front Entry system - $279...possibly lower

Brand new BOZ Thermo Boss 2mm regular or comp version - $279/$299 respectively

I know which one I am leaning towards but just curious what the SUZ community has to say.

Gear Talk / Wetsuits for SUS
« on: November 28, 2012, 05:03:51 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Getting to be that time of year.

I did some searches on wetsuits. Seems that people prefer different brands....different strokes for different folks.

I am curious where the preference lies in Back Zip or Front Entry.

Is one better than the other for paddling or is just preference?

Feel free to leave a comment.
