SUP General / Forward Stroke
« on: May 01, 2023, 10:10:40 AM »
I don't come on this site very much anymore as it seems to be mostly about Wings and Wing Surfing now. I suppose that's OK, as I understand that things evolve.

But if any of you are still interested in regular, stand up paddling, I ran across a video about the forward stroke that I thought you might enjoy.

Gear Talk / Starboard Sprint???
« on: April 07, 2022, 11:35:41 PM »
Wondering if anyone has had any water time on a Starboard Sprint? I have a chance to pick up a 2019 Starboard Sprint, but have never been on one. This one is 12' 6" x 23".

Any thoughts or impressions of the Starboard Sprint in general, or this particular year specifically?

Thank you.

Gear Talk / Starboard Airline Inflatable???
« on: December 12, 2021, 12:37:47 PM »
I'm wondering if anyone has a Starboard Airline inflatable and can give me their impressions? Or even if you don't have one, but have either paddled one or seen one up close.

I've been interested in getting one for a while now, and just learned there is one available in the size I want (12' 6" x 27").

I live on a small lake and in the summer we get a fair bit of boat traffic. The water can get pretty choppy and confused in the late afternoon, so I was looking for an inflatable that would provide some stability and still be fun to paddle.

So any thoughts or impressions you have would be appreciated. Thanks.

Random / Home Theatre
« on: May 29, 2021, 09:51:52 AM »
For the last few months we have been putting together a new soundstage for our home theatre set up. We now have all the speakers in place, but are still waiting for two more to replace some older speakers we are using temporarily. But a few days ago we got the new 4K Apple TV with Dolby Atmos sound. Our TV is an older Samsung Plasma so it's not 4K, but still has a pretty decent picture. But the real goal of what we've been putting together has been the sound stage.

I've been really happy so far with how everything has come together and I know it will be even better once we get the final pair of speakers we have on order. But with the addition of the new Apple TV, last night is the first time I've heard a movie in a home theatre setting in Dolby Atmos. We bought the movie "Gravity" with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Holy crap, it was amazing. Sound coming at us from all directions and the floor shaking. Talk about being immersed in a movie. We originally saw this movie in the theatre a number of years ago (in 3d) and I wasn't all that impressed. Last night it quite literally blew me away. It was that good. It's been a while since we saw it in the theatre, but I'm almost positive it sounded better on our system than it did in the theatre. I'm thinking this is probably because the sound is concentrated in a much smaller area.

For any of you who are into this kind of thing, we now have a 7.2.2 sound system. It has been quite the journey putting all this together, and last night was the culmination. If sound is important to you and this is something you are considering and not sure about, my advice would be to go for it. It quite literally takes movie watching to an entirely different level.

And the cherry on the cake for me at least, is that I am also a huge music fan and our new system also takes music listening to an entirely new level. This is definitely the nicest sound system I've ever owned.

Gear Talk / Decision On New Inflatable
« on: September 13, 2020, 01:30:12 PM »

My wife is thinking about getting a new inflatable board. She currently has a generic brand 12’ 6” x 30” inflatable. It’s a decent inflatable, but is older and she got it before the lighter inflatable boards came out, so it is pretty heavy.

For reference, my wife is in decent shape. She is 65 years old, 5’ 2” and maybe 120 pounds. Her hard board, which is her main board, is a 12’ 6” x 27” Bark Contender.

So she is looking for an inflatable that is not too heavy to carry. She wants something that is stable, but less than 30” wide. Because she is smaller in stature I’m thinking 30” is too wide for her. She does find it quite a reach on her current 30” wide inflatable so she would like to go narrower if it’s possible to do so and still have decent stability. Deck bungies would be nice, but not mandatory.

She plans to use it for general touring, things like midnight paddles and to possibly take if we were to travel somewhere.

I’ve done some looking and have kind of narrowed it down to either the Red Race, 12’ 6” x 28” or the Starboard All Star Inflatable, 12’ 6” x 27”.

Kind of leaning towards the Starboard as it has a center handle and deck bungies. I also remember reading a post from someone on this forum that the Red Race 12’ 6” x 26” was very tippy, so not sure how stable the 28” would be?

But I would like to hear from others. Any thoughts on either of these boards? Or any other inflatable boards I’m missing? Thanks.

Gear Talk / Storing Inflatables???
« on: July 09, 2020, 09:04:33 AM »
Hi Guys,

Just curious if any of you have seen any ill effects from storing your inflatables rolled up? I’ve always stored my inflatables partially filled with air. Not sure exactly how much pressure, but enough so the board keeps its’ shape, but not enough to have any real pressure in it.

The problem is, between my wife and I we have 4 inflatables. Add this to our hard boards and we are starting to run out of storage space. If I deflated a couple of the inflatables it would give us a lot more space, but I’m a little concerned about storing the boards this way.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Second Wing???
« on: July 07, 2020, 04:29:31 PM »
I am finally getting started on my Wing journey. Has taken a while, but I'm slowly getting everything going.

So far I’ve been out on the water, on my inflatable paddle board with my Wing a couple of times. First time didn’t go well at all. Had a great deal of difficulty controlling the Wing and could only go downwind.

Today was better in that I did manage to go upwind a bit, but would still say I had difficulty controlling the Wing.

I have the Naish S 25, 5.3 meter Wing. And as some of you may remember, I’m brand new to all this. I have no experience in any kind of wind sport. Have never foiled or surfed either so I know I have a huge learning curve.

All this said, I’m wondering if it would be better for me to purchase a second, smaller Wing to learn on? Naish has a 4.6 but I’m thinking that would probably be pretty close in size to what I have now, so I was wondering about the 3.6? I know a 3.6 won’t be enough to fly me on my foil board when I get to that stage, but I’m wondering if it’s what I need to learn how to control the Wing?

If this is just something I need to keep at then I’ll do that. And while I don’t necessarily want to have to buy another Wing just for the sake of learning, if it’s what I have to do then I’ll take the plunge.

And for reference, I’m 67 years old, 5’ 8” tall and weigh just over 150 pounds.

As always, any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Random / The Fed's Losing Battle with Deflation (w/ Jeff Booth)
« on: March 29, 2020, 10:14:22 AM »
Maybe some of you need a break from all the Covid 19 news. Here is an interesting interview with Jeff Booth, the author of “The Price Of Tomorrow”. The interview is about 45 minutes long and the key is really how we are living in a false economy due to deflationary pressures and the future consequences. Is very interesting. He touches on AI and a number of other topics.

Full disclosure in that I know Jeff and am good friends with his mother.

Hi Guys,

I’m wondering what type of risks are involved in learning Wing Foiling? This may sound like a silly question, but I am brand new to the sport and have just recently got all my gear. And I’m also asking for a very specific reason.

I only thought of this when I saw supnorte’s post in the “Virus” thread in the “Random” category. He said in Portugal that surfing, SUP and all nautical activities are forbidden because of the Covid 19 breakout. At first this didn’t make sense, but later in his post he explained these measures have been put in place to minimize the need for non Covid 19 patients to take up hospital beds. This makes a lot of sense to me.

So while I just recently got all my gear, and haven’t yet had the opportunity to get it out on the water, I really don’t want to do anything to put myself at risk and potentially take up a bed that might be needed. I know we can’t live in a bubble, but I also think during this time we need to think of those that will be in need.

So back to the original question, I’m wondering what type of risk is involved, especially while learning? I’m thinking I’m fairly safe if I just wanted to take the Wing out on a regular (inflatable) paddle board and get a feel for the Wing on the water?

I’m also guessing the only real danger is posed by the foil? So if this is the case I could just put off for a while taking my foil board and foil out.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / What Wing To Buy???
« on: March 02, 2020, 02:40:34 PM »
Hi Guys. One more question on gear. I’m now starting to look into Wings and would like your opinion. I’m strongly leaning towards the 6m FOne Swing but if there were any others I would consider contenders they would be the Ozone and one of the Gong Wings. As I’m a complete newbie, I’m basing this on reviews I’ve read and what seems to be people’s general impressions.

So any thoughts on what would be the best Wing, and the best size for me?

And just as a reminder, I’m a complete newbie so this is the Wing I’ll be learning on. I’m soon to be 67 years old and am 5’ 8” tall and weigh approx. 150 pounds.

For other equipment, I have just purchased an Axis foil set, which consists of a 1020 front wing, standard fuselage, 500 tail and 68 cm mast. For a board I have on order a Slingwing Outwit (6’ 6”).

And finally, my wind conditions are pretty light. Our average summer wind would range somewhere between 15 km. per hour and 20 km. per hour (so from 9.3 mph to 12.4 mph).

So any thoughts on the best Wing and best size of Wing for me? Again, based on reviews and owner feed back I’m strongly leaning towards the FOne Swing.

Am I correct in thinking I should be getting a 6m, or do you think I could get away with a 5m? I’m thinking a 5m would be easier to handle but then again it might make learning more difficult given my light wind conditions.

As always, your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Used Foil Board???
« on: February 24, 2020, 11:26:26 PM »
Hi Guys,

I’m brand new to this sport and as of right now don’t own any equipment. You have all been very generous in guiding me as to what equipment I should and should not consider as I get started on this new venture.

I thought that if I like this sport, and if it’s anything like SUP, I will most likely start out on one board and end up getting different boards as I progress. So I thought if I had the opportunity to get a used board and save some money, maybe I should go that route first.

I’m hoping to get your opinion on a used foil board I found on our local Craigslist. You can see the board in question here (https://vancouver.craigslist.org/van/spo/d/vancouver-sunova-sup-foil-surf-board/7061839000.html).

Do you think this would be a decent board to get me started?

Would a foil set up of an Axis 1020 front wing, Standard fuselage, 500 tail and 68 cm. mast work O.K. on this board (Admin. had suggested this foil set up and I am currently looking into it).

And just so you know, I’m 5’ 8” tall and weigh just over 150 pounds. The wind on the lake I will be learning on is light compared to what you are used to. My wind would generally range somewhere between 9 mph and 12 mph.

As always, your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Wing Size???
« on: February 22, 2020, 01:29:05 PM »
I’m looking for some advice on what size Wing I should get. I’m an avid paddle boarder, but have never done any kind of wind sport. So this is all new to me. I’m seriously looking at getting one of the new Naish S25 Wings, but am not sure what size to get.

I’m thinking of either the 4.6 or the 5.3. I’m thinking as a beginner the 4.6 would be smaller and hopefully easier to handle and to learn on. But given my conditions, I’m wondering if the 5.3 might be better?

As for my conditions, I’m on a small lake and in spring / summer, the wind comes up most afternoons. The wind on my lake however, would probably be light in comparison to what some of you are used to. I’m not a good judge, but I’ve been told our wind averages between 15 km. per hour and 20 km. per hour, which would roughly translate to 9 mph to 12 mph.

Should also add that I’m 5’ 8” tall and weigh approx. 150 pounds. I’m 66 years old and in decent shape.

The lighter wind makes me think the 5.3 might be better, but given my smaller size I'm wondering if I could get away with the 4.6?

So any thoughts on the 4.6 vs. the 5.3 Wing?

I should also add that to start with I won't be trying a foil. I think I'll just use the Wing on my paddle board at first to get used to it. I would like to try foiling, but thought it would be better to get used to the Wing on one of my inflatable boards first.

The above is the title of a book written by Jeff Booth, who is the son of a good friend of mine. I think the book goes on sale on Amazon on January 14th. I got the chance to read an advance copy and found it pretty interesting.

I am attaching the link to a pod cast with an interview of Jeff where he talks about some of his thoughts. I think some of you might find it interesting.

Does anyone know of a retail store that would sell the “Add-On Drift Stopper” made by Duotone? Or failing that, can anyone direct me to a store that carries Duotone equipment and that way maybe I could get them to order it for me.

I’m having difficulty getting this item directly from the Duotone website.

Thanks.
