SUP General / peeling on surftec board?
« on: May 06, 2019, 07:45:19 AM »
Hi all - has anyone ever seen something like this peeling on a board? It's a used Surftec board I inquired about for my wife.  Haven't been able to go see it (it's 1+ hours away), but thought it was a curious "condition". What would cause this strange layer to peel like that?

Hi all - new to the forum and to SUPing. As part of my recent 40th, my wife collected $$ towards a "mid-life crisis" aquatic vessel - which turned out to be my first SUP (a used 11'4" focus smoothie).

I'm a long-time proner (nothing special - just a single-fin or fish cruiser type), and for the forseeable future most of my surfing will likely still take place on prone boards. But seeing I recently relocated to RI (up Narraganset Bay a ways), I figure there is no shortage of flat water paddling / exploring in my future. I've been reading the forum for a while, but didn't join until I actually got out there.

The ice finally cleared out of the local access points and allowed me to get a couple of sessions in this past week. All went well and I'm sure I have a lot to learn regarding technique, etc. I did have a couple of notable unexpected sore areas, that I was curious about. First was the arch of my feet - I'm in somewhat constricting 7mm booties, which may have contributed - but they started hurting almost right away. I tried moving around on the board a bit more my 2nd time out, but still experienced it. Second was my lower back on my right side. It was borderline debilitating for a few days after the first session. Normal "growing pains" or something that a common beginner mistake may be contributing to.

I must say the 2nd session, although more nautically challenging (paddling against a pretty stiff current and dodging mini-icebergs coming downstream), I was more comfortable & the back pain wasn't so bad. Although I seem to have "delayed onset exhaustion" that creeps up on me about 1-2 hours after the session. I haven't felt that tired right out of the water, but man, a little while afterwards and I'm gassed! Hooked though - already planning how I can get out for a short session before work during the week.
