Foil SUP / Foil for first SUP foil session
« on: September 04, 2022, 04:09:19 PM »
Been wingnutting (wing foiling) as my wife calls it for my first summer season now and decent  at flying on both tacks now, still cant jibe,  anyway that is another story...... I have the 2022 Naish Hover Crossover 7'4" 120L and had some good SUP surfing sessions on it. 185 lbs here. Question, I have the F-One 1800 Gravity and F-One Phantom 1280 on there medium fuse. Which should I use for my maiden SUP foil? Will be in crumbly/ rolly beach break at medium to high tides, 2-4 ft waves.

I have been learning to Wingfoil on the F-One Phantom 1280,  "short" fuselage ( 37cm) from F-One. Total length tip of front foil to tail back is 76cm. I am comfortable wingfoili flying in control and up/down wind.  I have the Naish 2022 Hover Crossover (7'4" x 30", 120 liters) with windfoil option but have never windfoiled before. Will my Phantom 1280 be a decent learing vehicle for windfoil on the Naish Hover Crossover?  I am 85kg.

Gear Talk / Surfinz fin into FCSII box
« on: May 28, 2022, 03:51:12 PM »
I got a new Naish SUP and it has FCS II boxes for side fins. I have some Surfinz fins for my Starboard SUP and they dont quite fit in the FCS II box. Seems the FCS II box has a slight taper in the box side and Surfinz fins dont have a taper and dont quite make in by about 5mm. The FCS II box is suppose to receive the FCS standard fin optionally. Anybody modified a Surfinz fin to fit in FCS or FCS II box?

SUP General / Kailoa paddle cut down
« on: February 12, 2022, 11:22:50 AM »
I am transitioning this Kailoa paddle for SUP surfing, taking about 4 inches off. I have no idea what kind of glue was used to attach the handle. Any good how to videos or recommendations out there for remove, cut and re-attach this handle?

General Discussion / SUP surfboard for a 250 lb person
« on: December 27, 2021, 12:23:58 PM »
My 250 lb, 6'5" buddie wants to learn to SUP surf and I was thinking of giving him my Mistral Pacifico Wave, but is is it large and wide enough to float a beginner and get him progressing in Santa Barbara wave conditions? It is 170L , nose 19.25”, tail 16.75”, width 30”, 11’1” long.

The Starboard website says the PR is rated at 85kg max rider weight. I am right at that limit outside the holidays and over during the holidays. I wonder if this is a typo as it is 130L in volume. This is out of family in compared to other Starboards boards in this range, ie.  8'5" Pro is 112L and rated up to 90kg, 8'8" widepoint airborne 123L rated up to 95kg, etc.

Does anybody know why the PR is rated only up to 85kg rider weight or a bad typo error?

Gear Talk / Need a surfy board for choppy/moving water conditions
« on: March 04, 2017, 08:03:47 AM »
I have a Starboard 2013 Pro 9'x29" ( 118 liters) and love it for glassy to moderate chop days. On days with heavy chop and reflecting waves off the rocks or lots of moving water, I fall too much.  I’m looking for a more stable SUP surf board in the 8.5"-9' range.  I am 185 lbs intermediate/advanced range and wave size range is waist high to maybe a few feet over head, mostly beach breaks but some point breaks.  I do like Starboard boards for their durabilty yet still lite. Was thinking either Converse or Widepoint 8’8″ or maybe Pocket Rocket. How do these boards compare to 2013 Pro 9.0 n stability and surfiness? Suggestions for next board?

SUP General / Proner Impediment Tactic
« on: November 23, 2015, 02:06:37 PM »
Firstly, I am a conscientious and polite SUP surfer for about 8 years now and I have been noticing a consistent proner tactic lately. When I am beginning to gain speed way before a drop, proners are paddling toward a collision intersection point such that I have to break/turn to avoid them and I am usually forced to miss the wave. Now this can be unavoidable at a point break with a tight peak, but even at long wide open beach breaks I am seeing more of it. Yesterday a rather cute woman did it without even attempting to catch the wave and just sat there smiling afterward! The only strategy I can think of is to keep moving and basically trace ovals around proner lineup such that half the time I am inside of them.

Any other ideas out there that won't create conflict?

SUP General / Technique tips for choppy surf conditions
« on: March 04, 2015, 10:15:23 AM »
Weekend warrior here who has to take what he can get. I am comfortable in just about any smooth surf conditions but I have been humbled with stability/falling on my 9' x 29" Starboard Pro in choppy conditions off of Ocean Beach San Francisco lately. Just getting to a standing position is tough at times. My old 9' x 30" Starboard Converse is dramatically more stable in chop but not fast enough nor maneuverable enough in large surf ( for me at least) and much less fun in general. Any tips for getting up and staying up in choppy ocean conditions on narrower less stable boards?

SUP General / Whale surprize
« on: January 02, 2015, 04:14:51 PM »
I received an amazing new years gift! I was SUP surfing this morning at Ocean Beach, San Francisco (Sloat St., about 4-6 ft glassy surf, beautiful clear crisp morning) and up the beach I saw a whale on the outside with a few dolphin swimming around it. I headed out to say hi and the whale ( maybe 18 ft long, about 2 board lengths, type unknown) surfaced under me and knocked me off by pushing the nose of my board up out of the water about 1 ft with its tail. Seemed like a gentle back off buddy this is my wave gesture. It made me spontaneously laugh so hard while I was scrambling to get back on my board. All the other surfers near me got quite the giggle and show.

Anybody else ever have a similar experience? Was it playing with me or warning me ?  Any chance it did not know I was there and just bumped into me?  Were the whale and dolphin group  likely following a school of fish?
