General Discussion / neck injuries
« on: March 10, 2019, 06:28:06 PM »
Anyone have experience with neck injuries when going over the falls?
I fear increasing age and big steep falling are a bad combination...
What worked for your recovery of you have been through this?

General Discussion / Realizing a board can be TOO BIG
« on: February 20, 2019, 08:41:14 AM »
I recently stepped down from a JL SG 8'7 to a ST 7'10. I must say i had agonized about the move thinking it was going to be too small. Quite the opposite! First time out and I knew i had been on a board too big. (mind you i only weigh 155). But the feeling of control makes me realize that sometimes the larger board would get away from me. Now I know that in high winds and chop that longer waterline will come in very handy (especially I do miss the better tracking).

Gear Talk / waxing technique
« on: February 17, 2019, 09:59:17 PM »
I got a new SUP with no deck pad. I followed this video :
used sticky bumps base and wax coats
But after just one session today (and a cool day for Hawaii ; 70's) the area where i stand was pretty much wax free....
Any pointers to make the wax last longer than a session?

Gear Talk / Board Bag?
« on: February 17, 2019, 09:56:53 PM »
Beyond protecting the paint job from dings etc how does a bag help in day to day?

Does it keep the board noticeably cooler so that one could consider leaving the board in a car?

Gear Talk / Leash toe advice
« on: February 09, 2019, 10:18:23 PM »
Have used some narrow guage parachute cord but that failed once.
What do folks like to use to secure the leash to the board for SUP wave riding?

Technique / getting back on the pad
« on: February 03, 2019, 01:45:07 PM »
I surf a JL stun gun now for 2 years. I used to think " why did they put the kick pad so far back, i'll never get on that except in the steepest waves" (admittedly the SG seems to be FOR steep waves.)

But over time i find i am back there more and more. Wondering what accounts for that ? I mean obviously technique is getting better but how could that slow learning curve for me have been speeded up?

Foil SUP / JL Foil Sups flood market?
« on: November 28, 2018, 01:21:26 PM »
I see lots of JL Foil Sups for sale at good prices on Craigslist...
Just a function of too many people who bought and didnt like? Or is it something particular to those boards that folks are ditching them?

Gear Talk / Leash to Suit Velcro?
« on: November 14, 2018, 02:45:56 PM »
Has anyone tried to velcro their leash to their bathing suit to keep it out of the water? Perhaps if one can get the size of the velcro tab right, so it stays on except when pulled (and hopefully not pulling ones shorts off)...

Gear Talk / advice on Fin set for Jimmy Lewis Stun Gun 8'7
« on: September 22, 2018, 07:40:34 PM »
Lost one of the stock fins so wanting to try a new quad set up. I weigh 155 and surf mostly south shore Oahu so from here out this season it is mostly chest high surf i am in.
Heard good things about Jamie Mitchell Futures...any others you like?

Gear Talk / Fishing set up for a Stand Up
« on: August 18, 2018, 03:40:15 PM »
Went out today in Hawaii. Wasnt really prepared and had 25 knot winds and 2-4 foot surf so a bit tricky for a novice to say the least...
Had my spinning rod tucked into my board shorts...
I am on a 10.5 glass board that i would prefer not to ruin in order to modify...

Any advice on rod holders, ways to strap down cooler would be greatly appreciated

Technique / How to take off in a breakingwave
« on: July 08, 2018, 05:52:39 PM »
Try as I might Idont seem to be able to progress in my ability to increase the success rate of making the take off
on waves that are breaking as i take off...
I know i need to get my body prepared for the sudden acceleration of the board and crouching seems to help with a firm forward foot but I feel so psyched out...

advice? Videos?

Gear Talk / Jimmy Lewis stun gun 8'7"
« on: April 01, 2017, 07:36:12 PM »
I find that I rarely get my back foot onto the kick pad, as if it is too far back for me. I only weigh 155. Only on the steepest over head waves does it begin to feel right there for me.  Anyone else move it forward?

Gear Talk / jimmy Lewis water from gore valve?
« on: August 17, 2016, 08:44:08 PM »
Had my new JL Stun gun out in my yard after long session today and noticed a bit of salt water coming out of valve onto e deck

Does that mean I have a leak?

Next steps?
