Hi folks,

It's been years since I've been on the forum, and I'm stoked to see all the excitement around foiling! I'm new(ish) to wingfoiling, and holy shit....what a blast! I'm totally hooked.

My GF and I are searching for wingfoiling destinations for January. Particularly with fun bumps or waves to ride. Anyone willing to share a few favorite locations? You never do this in surfing, but I've always found wind enthusiasts to be much friendlier than surfers lol.

I'll go first:

1. Grenadier Island on Lake Ontario this last August: Far and away the best downwind swell I've had yet. Head high to occasional 2 feet overhead, and you don't have to worry about sharks ;-). Wind only nuked 2 out of 6 days of our trip, but those 2 days were *epic*.

2. 7 Sisters, Baja. Everyone talks about La Ventana (I've yet to go), but the Wall at the 7 sisters *howls* and has plenty of swell. The other sisters do too, but some are wind-protected and it takes a serious 4x4 vehicle to move around.

3. Ka'a in Maui: Hardly a secret, but this place gets epic for wind + waves.

Would love to hear where y'all have found the magical cross-section of swell bumps + wind.

General Discussion / Moving to Santa Cruz..
« on: February 05, 2021, 03:54:09 PM »
Hi folks,

I am leaving San Clemente and moving to Santa Cruz. Aside from it being much colder and having a few more landlords... what can you say about it? My asshole surfing buddy said Santa Cruz doesn't take to SUP surfers well. Is that true? Are there any spots that are considered no go, and SUP friendly (or tolerant)? My favorite places to SUP in San Clemente were 204s, the pier, and state park. Not exactly SUP friendly, but definitely tolerant.

Thanks in advanced!

Gear Talk / Anyone concerned about the new Naish SUP 2020 construction?
« on: October 09, 2019, 01:37:42 PM »
Hi y'all,

I'm in the business for a new board and have always *loved* Naish. Right now, I have a 2017 7'10 X 27 Carbon Pro and LOVE it. But I've moved to Maine from SoCal and the waves are much mushier so I need to go a bit bigger.

Looking at the 2020 models, I'm a little concerned about the construction - see here: https://www.naishsurfing.com/product/mad-dog-s-glass-sandwich/ It seems like Naish has really been moving to save $$$ (letting team riders go, ditching the true pro models for more width/length to fit a larger audience, and now possibly reducing construction cost).

In the past, I have hated all glass boards. They crack/spider web for me regularly. And it's why I have loved Naish so much - never have I had a break or buckle (I did have a defective/warped board and they warrantied it immediately). See here for a post on 2020 construction post: https://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,35189.0.html

Then again, it's a Naish sandwich and I tend to trust them. Has anyone bought one of these? What do y'all think?

Gear Talk / If you could go back in time...
« on: December 06, 2016, 11:35:05 AM »
Who else has dropped a pretty penny on a board not knowing about the major flaw / defect to come. If only I could go back in time...listened to my girlfriend..not dropped 3 grand on a board.

I've got an opportunity to buy either a

Naish 12'6 Javeline LE 2014
Naish 12'6 Javeline LE / GX 2015
Naish 12'6 Javeline Maliko 2016

At 50% off. I'm leaning towards the Javeline 2014 LE as it's cheapest and I prefer the look. But I purchased a 2014 LE 8'0 that fell apart within weeks, only to find out the first half of the years boards we're defective. (Of course Naish reimbursed, but what a pain in the butt).

Has anyone had or heard anything about these boards? Specifically the Javeline 2014.

Thank you!

Gear Talk / Naish 2017 7'8 - Hard Rails?
« on: October 18, 2016, 03:44:10 AM »
Hey guys,

I noticed that the 2016 surf LE models (I was looking at the 7'8) had some big improvements compared to last years LE models. Tougher, more durable  construction, less rocker (better for most So-Cal waves) etc.

The only downside that I saw - very hard rails. I was a little surprised at how hard they were. I even talked to a Naish team rider who left naish due in part to the fact he couldn't stand hard, "less forgiving" rails.

My first question is, does anyone know if the 2017 shape as changed much (aside from the bat tail) and if those rails are still that sharp.

Second, what do y'all think of hard vs. soft rails?

Thanks!

SUP General / Has anyone else experienced an increase in SUP hate?
« on: October 11, 2015, 09:49:41 AM »
The last month has been a nightmare for me out in the line-up. I have three yelling matches at Lost Winds (San Clemente), one near fight in Baja (Los Gaviotas), and 1 screaming match at 204's (San Clemente). For at least a year, I have been very mindful of allowing proners waves, waiting my turn, and letting good sets pass by. It almost seems like the more respectful I get, the worse its getting? My typical response is "Hey, I'm not leaving. But i'm not gonna be a dick, either, so don't snake me and I won't snake you." That usually works, except the time in Baja where he kept getting closer and splashing my face while I was sitting.

Has anyone else seen this increase in SUP hate??

SUP General / A vacation anywhere in the world..
« on: April 30, 2015, 02:34:11 PM »
Hey guys,

So my parents tell me today they wanna go on a family vacay. And the kids get to choose...stoked!

So I'm looking for some help. Where should we go?? We're based in CA. I'm looking for something with good surf during the summer (hopefully sup friendly), good diving visibility, good choice of jet ski/water toy rentals, and plenty of outside activities...without the crowd. Where would you guys go? Leaving out OZ Cuz of my brothers insane fear of sharks.

Gear Talk / Deck pad - Hyrdroturf Vs. Sea Deck
« on: March 24, 2015, 12:29:22 PM »
Hey guys,

So I've narrowed down the search for my new infinity for either the sea deck pad (closed cell) or the small diamond grove from hydroturf.

My question for the zoners: which provides better traction? When looking closely at the sea deck I noticed it's very similar to what Naish is using these days. Closed cell and good traction. A little rough on the skin but i'll sacrifice comfort for good traction.

Anybody out there using hydroturf or something similar to there small diamond patterns? What is the best pad for traction?

Gear Talk / OAM deck pad with holes?

Anyone use this? It looks light and functional...but I've heard rumor it's very slippery. Thoughts?

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Deck pad...
« on: March 11, 2015, 06:09:36 PM »
Hey guys...

Looking for some resources for SUP traction pads. I recently had a custom made by infinity (thanks to the direction of some of you guys) but looking for a deck pad that fits the color scheme. OAM doesn't have anything that fits. Also tried the hydroturf route. Is there another deck pad company that you guys use and trust? Thanks!

Gear Talk / SUP'ing Jalama??
« on: January 29, 2015, 01:09:58 PM »
So my Proner buddies are trying to talk me into a trip to Jalama. They even offered to cover the cost cuz they know I don't get real excited trying new places on a SUP.

Two questions:

A) Is it SUP friendly?
B) Some of you are gonna laugh... But I have to ask anyway. How sharky is it? I hear Santa Barbara gets more visitors than we do here in South OC. Or at least...bigger ones ;)

Thoughts??

Gear Talk / Does the perfect ding repair guy exist?
« on: January 04, 2015, 03:48:07 PM »
Forget the search for the perfect board, how about the ding repair guy? My experiences so far have left me puzzled, angry and confused. Maybe I just have bad luck...

What I want:

- professional ding repair
- knows how to paint and blend colors
- hard working: gets things done in a timely manner
- reasonably priced
- respects or at least doesn't despise SUP'ers

What i've gotten:

- sh*tty "I hate sup'ers but i'll take there money" attitude
- ding looks good and repaired until it receives any pressure and falls apart
- charges me out the a$$ (and negotiation is a painful process)
- returns my board with resin drops hardened on the board
- returns my board dirtier than when I took it in (doesn't care to wipe it down or remove excess paint off the pad)

Are my expectation too high? Today I received my Naish from a guy in San Clemente and it looked like he used it as a table to do work on other boards. Dust, resin, sanded resin, and a foreign sticky substance i've never seen (uhhh?) And all he was supposed to do was a paint. I have communicated my frustrations with him before so today I gave up. I live in south OC.

Ideas?  :P

SUP General / Whitewater Sup'ing...
« on: December 22, 2014, 06:58:19 PM »
I've been watching some white water river SUPing and it looks insanely fun. My question: Have any of you guys done it? And..... Are there any spots near OC to do it for a San Clemente local?
