Sessions / SUP demos in St. Pete Beach FL....
« on: March 15, 2008, 04:19:46 AM »
The shop I Surf for, The Surf Shack, has been doing demos every couple of weeks lately. Gettinf quite a few people interested in theese things. He has sold at 4 of them at these demos, and the other shops in the area are scrambling to find SUPs to sell now :D . It is getting very popular around here now. We paddled out to a Beach bar on a Sunday afternoon, there where 3 of us at the start, met up with a friend from a rival (LOL) shop on thier new LAIRD demo board, and paddled up to the Beach Bar. There where 2 other SUP'rs, I have never seen before, on Jimmy Lewis' boards. We had at least half of the Beach goesr riding theese things by the end of the day. A lot of REALY REALY pretty girls, so it made it real difficult to want to stay there..... yeah right  ;) . SUPn is taking over the WORLD   ;D

Surf Shack owners Son, lil Greg, paddling a bunch of the groms around.

Gear Talk / Epoxy and heat.....
« on: February 09, 2008, 03:02:21 AM »
I just got my SUB back from having the finbox fixxed. As mentioned in a prior post, it was taking on water at the finbox. I was talking to the shaper that fixxed it for me, not the shaper of the SUB, and he siad because it is epoxy i need to keep it out of the heat. I don't have room to keep it in my House , nor will the Wife ever let that happen :D . I have it hanging from the cieling in my garage, in Florida, and it gets real hot in the Summer in there. Tommy, my shortboard shaper, showed me where the epoxy has sucked in around the stringer, and the stringer is now about 1/4 in. higher than the board (on the bottom and top). He says this is from the board expanding and contracting, from heat and cold obviously. Is this normal for epoxy? Or did my board co. use an inferior product? He suggested that I keep th board as low as possible in the garage, away from the heat of the cieling. I don't realy have the room to do that though. So let me know if anyone else is having the same issues as me. As I know a lot of you are in Hawaii, and it stays HOT there year round, so i wonder if you all have theese problems. Thanks for reading my novel , and giving any advice/knowledge/suggestions.

The Shape Shack / water penetration.....
« on: December 24, 2007, 06:08:58 PM »
I have recently noticed that water is getting into my board through the fin box. I hang my SUB from my garage cieling, and it has been dripping for days from the edges of the fin box. I have determined that it is where the box meets the epoxy, and there are 3 spots that are breached. They are super small openings, and wouldn't be noticed at all if I didn't hang my board, fin down. My question is what can i do to fix this? I tried suncure epoxy resin, and filled around the edge of the box. It started "bubbling" air out of the edges of the box before the stuff could cure. I took the board out this morning for a few hours, and it is dripping again. I really want to get the board watertight, before it causes too much damge. Thanks for any help and suggestions anyone can give me. And just FYI I let the board dry out for 2 weeks before epoxying it. It had stopped dripping water for at least 4 days.

Sessions / Chrismass Eve Morning....
« on: December 24, 2007, 03:09:41 PM »
Went out today at a local spot, first thing this morning. I knew there was supposed to be a knee to thigh high wave today. Met my SUP bud Christian, and hit the Beach. We where Surfing the shorebreak near a small rock grouping, and I noticed a set roll through the pass (it was about  a 1/2 mile away). So we paddle over to it. Well what an early Christmass present we got. It was waist high, and peeling lefts for about 100 yards. There is a sandbar that forms at the Northern side of the Inlet, and it was SUPER low tide. We just sat out in the deep water on the edge of the sandbar, and picked off theese fantastic rides. I have Surfed that Beach for 25 years now, and have never seen it break that far out on the sandbar. It was definately a gift swell.

Sessions / Tuesday evening fun
« on: October 24, 2007, 03:41:50 AM »
Slipped out last night not expecting a whole lot with the light SW winds, and not much, if any, swell in the pond. Got to the Beach and found knee to occasional waist high sets, and med. lines. Even gt to take out my Fish for a few, untill I broke a fin, and took off a CHUNK of the tail :( , then it was back on the SUB. Only about 10 Surfers out total all up and down the Beach, and I garauntee they wish they had a SUP LOL.

Sessions / maghic session last night.
« on: October 02, 2007, 03:37:03 PM »
I got a call from someone I know, but not that wee (didnt even know they had my number) saying there was a 2 foot groundswell on the N. Beaches. Well I jumped at the chance, and took the SUB to the Beach. I found that He was totaly right, and there was a very good looking Blonde Girl laying on the waters edge in a cute bikini. Water was calm, and winds where howling offshore at 20-25 knots. But the Swell was linning up. I hit the water till well after dark, Surfed a lot of waves, watched a fantastic Sunset, and got hit on by an older (very atractive) woman as I left the water. What a great evening that was, all because somone I hardly know decided to call me. I am buying him a Beer at the next Surfrider Meeting for sure.

Events / SUP contest, 22 miler in Cocoa Beach, FL
« on: September 20, 2007, 06:49:49 PM »
This was just passed on to me, figured I'd share.I know it is short notice, but I jsut got it myself.

So far we have received 11 responses from paddlers interested in the 22 Mile Paddle Challenge, so we have gone ahead with its planning. We have moved the date to Saturday, October 20th. In the case of bad weather, the alternate date is Sunday October 21.

Sign-up will start at 7AM and we will start promptly at 8 AM. The entry fee is $10. The challenge will start at Lee Wenner Park in Cocoa at the base of the SR 520 Causeway bridge. The course will parallel the InterCoastal Waterway in the Indian River and continue south for 11 miles to the bridge at the Pineda Causeway (SR 519). Turn around will be just prior to the bridge at a Manatee No Wake Zone sign which will also be marked with a buoy.

There will be a maximum of 4 hours for paddlers to reach the turn around point. Any paddlers not meeting the 4 hours will exit the water at POW-MIA Park adjacent to the turn around. Also, any paddler who wishes to, can leave the course at that point. Any one exiting here will be provided a ride back to Lee Wenner Park..

An escort boat will follow the paddlers and there will be a lifeguard on a jet ski to escort stragglers to the finish line.

Paddlers are required to have a minimum of 20 ounces of hydration and more is recommended. Also reef shoes are recommended for water entry and exit. Each paddler will be provided with a whistle to use in case of emergency.

A week prior to the challenge we will e-mail you asking for a confirmation of your attendance. If we have less than 6 entrants at that point we will cancel the challenge. We are getting very excited about holding this challenge. It will be a lot of fun and a will be a true long distance challenge for every one. We will be sending more updates as the date gets closer.
