SUP General / Informative article about The Ranch
« on: June 16, 2018, 04:46:06 PM »
I never would have thunk that paddling 2 miles could be this dangerous:

I guess the way the beach faces, an afternoon onshore could be difficult to paddle against.

Part of the Ranch will be open if you can make the 2 mile paddle.

Just read this in the LATIMES

SUP General / End of year reflections and Zoner shout-outs
« on: December 22, 2017, 12:06:28 PM »
I don't think anyone knows who I am on this site but I have been following posters for years.  This has been a very difficult year for me as I've endured 3 of the 10 top human stressors. The Zone postings are as insightful, humorous and uplifting and as constant as the ocean's presence. What got me through this trying year were SUP sessions, especially open ocean and believe it or not, postings on this blog. It truly is a good book without an end.  A special shout-out to SupTheCreek who always has an upbeat posting about the sport and life; Pono Bill's brilliantly worded observations about basically everything; Beesho's passion and devotion to big wave surfing and all the other regulars and their insights.
Thanks to all and keep paddling!!!!

Technique / Weight loss, technique, equipment
« on: May 19, 2017, 08:49:10 AM »
So I replaced my hatchet fin for a SIC 7" race fin and my speed on my regular 2.8 mile course improved by a respectable 4 minutes. My board didn't feel any less stable due to smaller fin but I'm on flat water. I was passed by a guy on a Bark who seemed about the same age but thinner. So now I'm thinking that it's a lot about weight loss and BMI because my equipment, cadence and technique are similar to others who pass me.  Then again, this is probably a topic that rowers write books about so it's probably a combination of many factors.

Random / Surfy SUP at Costco

I wonder how this thing would handle heavy surf? They have a promo video of it in 1' ankle slappers. http://www.agit-global.com/content/9ft-6in-v1-sup

Downwind and Racing / new fin?
« on: May 09, 2017, 09:13:43 AM »
I have a NSP DC 14 which I use in the bay and open ocean. I am considering upgrading my fin but not too excited about spending $120.00.
The fin I have seems to drag a bit but since I have only owned 2 race boards, I am not sure if it's just my imagination. I'm 210 lbs and intermediate to advanced paddler.
Any idea if I would notice a great difference between the one on the NSP site -RACE 22 (click on link) and the one in the pic?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

SUP General / THAT COSTCO BOARD BE MOVIN!
« on: February 16, 2017, 02:23:04 PM »
I'm paddling my new NSP DC 14 thinking I'm the man. I passed a few guys on their rental  SUPS and I'm feeling good. Then I see a guy in the distance that I'm having difficulty catching.  I paddled hard for about 15 minutes so that I could get closer to see what he's riding. As I get closer, I start to see what I believe is a Wavestorm. Could it be? No way!  My highly rated NSP DC 14 designed by a French speed guru and shaped by an Australian, is not blowing by a Wavestorm?  He's paddling strong but he's certainly not crouched forward in a racing stance. As I approach, I see he is one of these thin, wiry guys in his 20's.  What a difference it makes to be thin and young cuz this guy was moving. I'm 210 and 51 years old. HUMBLED INDEED.

Gear Talk / Race Board Advice Sought - 27" wide or 25" wide
« on: June 09, 2016, 11:18:26 AM »
I'm about to pull the trigger on a Riviera 14' race board. I'm 6'0 and 200 lbs and paddle afternoons in Alamitos Bay in Long Beach. The reason I specified afternoons is because it's much windier than morning conditions. Although I'm in the bay, there are days when it gets a bit of bump due to wind and or boat wakes. I've been paddling a 14" x 27" Naish Glide without any difficulties in maintaining my balance. The 25" Riviera has  a volume of 277 which is comparable to my Glide. My concern though is if I lose 2", will I still have that stable feeling? I don't want to fall in because I usually take my phone with me and I am not good about putting it in a plastic container.

Thanks

SUP General / Seal Beach Pier
« on: May 20, 2016, 10:52:01 AM »
I was checking out the replay on Surfline Seal Beach cam and saw a scene reminiscent of Apocalypse Now when the surfers were surfing with
smoke billowing around them - very surreal.  RIP Rubio's on the pier.

Hey Zoners,

Spring is here and so is the wind. I am looking to form a group of people who want to enjoy a few downwind sessions.
I'm available on weekends and was thinking meeting at Belmont Shore and carpooling to Cabrillo.
We launch around 1:00 PM  when the wind picks up. Should be at The Shore by 2:00 and then someone drives me back to
retrieve my van.

Hit me up with an IM or just post below.
Thanks,
