Travel, Trips, Destinations / Headin' out....
« on: February 02, 2019, 09:26:54 AM »
....to Encinitas. Been three yrs since my last visit. Was gonna follow Creek's lead to Portugal but there were factors holding me back. Namely the chill there this time of year.....and board bag fees. I'd have been ok w/it but my wife gets cold REALLY easily. So I set my sights on Encinitas, mainly because United Airlines is only charging $40 ea/way for board bags to celebrate surfing becoming the official state sport of CA.
Encinitas here I come. Booked my first Airbnb and it's actually a block closer to the beach than our last stay. 8'0'' Assassin is all bagged, tagged, racked, and ready!
Stoked!

Sessions / Winter Sessions- January 2019
« on: January 30, 2019, 04:08:26 PM »
Not a bad start to 2019! Only a broken leash so far. My winter suit is an O'Neil Pyro-Tech 5.5/4 hooded full. It was sent back after two seasons to have the fws reglued. This is the fourth season for it and it's starting to leak just a bit. Still pretty warm when I'm not gettin' flushed in 40F water on bigger days!
Sooo afraid for my Hull Ripper that it's gonna break again! It's way more fragile than the bamboo construction.
Stay stoked , Zoners!......and warm! Polar vortex just arrived here in NJ!

Random / Owl Hunting In the Reserve
« on: January 29, 2019, 08:04:43 AM »
First hike into our precious wildlife reserve was quite rewarding.  Sadly there is alot of trash out there. I pick up all I can hiking in and half way in here's just no more I can do by myself so I leave it all at one of the reserve's signs and drag it all back on the hike out. The bayside overwash areas have SO much garbage washed up, almost all of it plastic. We need a team to go in one day and do a cleanup.

General Discussion / Can't hurt to ask.
« on: January 26, 2019, 09:17:54 PM »
A buddy of mine learned how to fly and shoot video w/a really nice drone a coupla yrs ago. I helped him edit a coupla real estate videos he did for rental properties. So I asked if he'd shoot one day while I was out and he said sure. Next day he calls and tells me to bring a memory card w/me to the surf. And it was going off. One of the warmest days so far this winter. Nice light winds, pumping ground swell, and sunny skies.
Never edited drone footage before and this was an overdose of buttery footage. Took me a while. Amazing how personal the pov is.

btw- This jetty is now off limits to the public. ACOE has started a full renovate w/steel sheeting being driven deep into the ocean floor. Gonna miss the old girl we've called Wooden Jetty since it's inception. The new jetty is called "The Terminal Groin".

You can read about the new groin in a blog a long time local here writes.  He's really interesting and edits our local newspaper.

General Discussion / Adobe Premiere Pro CS6
« on: January 13, 2019, 08:15:46 PM »
Anybody using it? I had it on my desktop pc for yrs but when it finally went so did my copy of Premiere. So I downloaded an old trial ver of it the other day and gave it a go. Took a while to remember a bunch of the functions as it's a deep piece of editing software. But I had some fun trying a glitch effect. Also learned how to edit a grid to center and straighten horizon. Another technique I learned a while ago is time remapping and temporal smoothing for transitions in and out of fast/slo-motion clips.
Skooling it again and whittlin' away at my GBs of raw footage.

Hope ya like, Zoners! THANX!  8)

Gear Talk / Busted Paddle
« on: January 05, 2019, 02:35:55 PM »
Darn! First paddle break ever for me. Board got away from me and as the wave picked it up the tail kinda bucked and hit the blade. The Riviera camo wasn't my favorite shape for a paddle w/it's round shaft and ferret style handle (prefer the Kialoa Methane for it's elliptical shaft and kinder handle). But it was super cool w/the camo graphics. Guessin' some of you Zoners have repaired a paddle. I'm thinking pvc to fit inside it after removing the broken portion.
At least I surfed for an hr b4 it failed.

General Discussion / Good start to the New Year
« on: January 04, 2019, 02:01:18 PM »
We had good surf on 12/30/18 and again on 1/1/19. And it's been nice here in New Jerz. Not to cold yet.
Hope everyone's New Year was Zone-terrific.
Check out the action. The Rattler is a wave about 7 miles from me. Hadn't surfed it in over three yrs. Sweet mysto spot.
The barrelin' day on 1/1 is a little closer and used to be surfed ALOT in the 70s and 80s. But beach fill operations over the yrs has drastically changed it. Especially since the jetties were all buried. That town had THE sweetest jetties. Just me and my brother that day.

Gear Talk / Wetstuff Fleeces
« on: December 31, 2018, 03:46:25 PM »
Merry Christmas to me from Wetstuff! I think buying the Gulliver Vee-Box off him was THE most joyful Craig's List transaction ever. So much gear he has tossed my way. You are truly the Santa Clause of surf and sup, Wetstuff.
Today some beautiful fleece gear arrived which I'm assuming is to be worn under the wetsuit. Also maybe when the arctic air arrives and I hve to bundle up multiple layers to check the surf.Nice and soft. He had given me a heads up the fleeces were going to arrive and when they showed today I thought it was for my son. Nice surprise when he finally came home and we opened the package together only to discover it was indeed another Wetstuff package.
Thanx, Jim!

Sessions / Christmas Break(s)
« on: December 29, 2018, 11:31:31 AM »
A few of us scored some tasty waves right before Christmas this year here in New Jersey. I finally took out The Blade. Hadn't ridden it all year and there was a nice window to give it a go. After about 90 mins I switched up w/The Assassin which is about 15 ltrs more in vol.

Took a ride lookin' for some cleaner conditions than what my local offered. Found a wave where I usually try to avoid because of the fast breaking barrels that usually have a varsity team of shortboarders on it. Was a bit apprehensive and reluctant at first but managed a great session.

Sessions / New Jersey- December 2018
« on: December 11, 2018, 08:09:05 PM »
Some chilly December stoke. And it's gonna get alot colder. Stayed plenty warm in my 4/3 $100 Xterra Chest Zip fullsuit today (12-11). Real light offshores and sunny skies helped alot! I ordered it in a LG and it felt a little tight last fall. This yr it feels way looser.   8)
