Classifieds / Smik Hipster Twin 8'0" in Jupiter, FL
« on: November 24, 2019, 09:24:51 AM »
Scotty from Australia delivered this to me in Palm Beach a couple of years back. It turned out to be a bit too small for me and ended up using it about 5 times. No damage, really good shape as most marks on it are just from being in my garage. 8'0"*30.5 118L. Bought new at $1600, sell at $600. Too big to ship so pretty much local only. thanks.

Foil SUP / SUP foil board size
« on: July 27, 2019, 06:59:04 AM »
am considering buying a SUP foil board, but am unsure of proper sizing. specifically, does the foil under the SUP provide additional stability at stand-still, allowing you to go smaller in size? or is my current standard SUP board a good model for what i need in a SUP foil board?

it seems smaller is always better in foiling, but if using something like a wing kite, being able to stand on the thing with foil down is still as much a factor as with standard SUPing. there are a lot of 6-ish foot SUP foil boards out there, but i doubt i could stand on any of them with my 205 pounds.

Gear Talk / what's proper etiquette when getting shut down on waves?
« on: April 02, 2019, 03:37:20 AM »
i recently got a 7'10" Hypernut, which i love on a wave, but it's got near zero glide. so i gotta be in the steepest part of the wave to catch it. guys on bigger boards keeps circling on the outside of me, and then i have to yield as they're on the wave before me. i've had people do this to me over and over, and they never once yielded to me. so i stand and watch them and have to hope there's a wave behind the one they all just took.

since there's no consideration given to me, what is the proper way to address this out there? do i just go for it every few waves? if it was the same person all the time, it'd be easier to deal with, but sometimes it's a flock of the bigger SUP boards altogether. (i'm sure this has been addressed elsewhere, but couldn't find it).

Classifieds / Jupiter, Fl 3 boards for sale
« on: February 16, 2018, 10:02:20 AM »
cleaning house. 3 boards for sale, all in very good to perfect condition.

L41- 8'4"*31 136L (very good condition)
Sunova Schroom- 7'9"*30" 104L (perfect)
SupSports Carbon WD- 8'10*32 150L (very good condition)

$600 for the Schroom. Cost me $1700 and used it about 5 times. Too small for me. $400/BO for L41 I used for a season, great board but my HYpernut replaced it. $400/BO for Supsports i just don't use anymore. Really don't know how I'd ship these, so mostly for Florida residents concern, unless you're willing to pay shipping.

Gear Talk / thank you Ke Nalu

i've had total shoulder replacement surgery and my older paddles weren't helping my cause. was 'sold' fairly large paddles for surf because i'm a bit larger guy, but learned that was wrong advice. finally ordered an xtuf(s) with wiki74, which when it arrived, looked tiny to me. but it works, and works well. i'm no techie on this stuff, but i do understand results. this paddle feels like a feather in my hand, yet it moves me with ease through and into the surf. me and my shoulder just wanted to say 'thanks'.

« on: January 21, 2017, 04:01:35 AM »
almost brand new condition, no damage whatsoever. out on water about 5 times, 3 of those times just paddling in flat water. did manage to catch a few waves on it and it's fast, but the board (104 ltrs) is just too small for my 210 lbs, at least in the context of my abilities.  currently board is at Blueline in Jupiter on consignment, can be seen there. or message me here. will not ship. $1200 or best. ($1700 new).

Gear Talk / Hypernut 8'0" review
« on: June 23, 2016, 11:13:23 AM »
just got my HN (ast construction) this week, and have had 4 sessions on it. I'm 6'3", 210 lbs, intermediate surfer with questionable balance skills. I also own an L41 ST at 8'4" for comparison, and it's been my favorite board for a few years now.

the HN is amazingly stable, more so than the slightly bigger L41. I tried a 7'8" HN for a few minutes a while back, and thought it was do-able, but went with the 8' because i surf in chop quite often and...I'm not getting any younger. The concave on the bottom of the HN feels a little weird to me when on a wave, at least i think it's the concave doing that. Almost like it's propping me up in the air a little bit, off the water. Maybe surfing this new board is just something I'll get used to, and it's not an issue but rather just an observation. The board feels very light, both to carry and on the water under foot. It turns without much effort, much like my L41. I felt a little slippage on one wave face, but have felt that with my L41 too. If you don't get back far enough on these wider style boards, that'll happen. I'd say the L41 is a tad faster on a wave, and the HN is a tad more squirrelly.  the L41 has a bit of glide, the HN has none. It took me a while to dial in the L41, but i felt comfortable immediately on the HN. Of course, these boards are similar enough that the learning curve shouldn't have been long going from one to the other. I'm using the stock plastic fins on the HN, and the L41 came with much nicer ones, so i expect i'll be upgrading soon on the HN.

Overall, I'd say anyone, especially slightly heavier guys, who want to ride a shorter board but are afraid of the balance issues, the HN is awesome. Because my HN is so close to my L41 in so many respects, it's probably quite a bit of overlap, but  i think i've got more to learn on the HN and doubt i'll ever go much smaller. it's nice having a backup anyway (question is: which one is the backup? ...ah, the new toy always gets priority).

SUP General / does starboard really want to sell their boards in the US?
« on: November 14, 2015, 04:05:10 AM »
i did a demo of Starboard SUP that i was interested in, but when i said 'sure, i'll take one' i was told it would be about 5-6 months before it would arrive. this seems like a ridiculous way to run a business, and i'm not sure how a company can survive with that type of turnaround. I've never had this type of experience with any other brands, so was wondering if this is unique to Starboard/the shop i'm dealing with/or something else altogether. My custom boards have taken as long as 2 months, but to order a production board from a catalog and expect that kind of wait seems absurd to me.  needless to say, for now it's a 'no sale'.

Gear Talk / Simmons-shaped boards vs regular boards
« on: May 11, 2015, 04:46:37 AM »
I've been on an L41 Simsup ST for about 6 months now, and find it difficult to get back on my regular shaped boards. They all seem so slow in comparison.  Some are actually more stable than my SIMSUP, but when it comes to performance, there is no comparison. I'm just wondering if others who own simmons-shaped boards have found the same to be true. I know some don't seem to like wide-tailed boards, but i don't understand why since they perform so much better, IMO. Now, my size and balance skills, or lack thereof, don't allow me to ride a board sub-30 in width, and maybe  those narrower boards are where performance shines..but i suspect there are many mere mortals out there like myself that just will never be comfortable on a 28" wide SUP, so the simmons shapes seem ideal for us.

Gear Talk / question about wave size vs board size
« on: July 30, 2014, 10:46:39 AM »
i've currently got a 8'5" custom Simmons style board and a 9' SB Hero. I use the custom for waves up to 6', but then find it's a bit slippery on steeper faces. Anything bigger, I use the Hero as it's tapered more in the tail. I'm a big fan of width, I think more because my height (6'3") than my weight (210 lbs).  I'm totally comfortable on both boards, but feel I need something a bit more challenging and for bigger days as well, so I've been looking around but as I don't have a long surfing history, I'm more than a bit confused about what i should be looking for.

I thought going shorter, less volume, like a 8'2" SB WP or JP Widebody might be the answer.  But reading about them, the comments seem to  say they're for smaller wave days. Are they for smaller wave days only for smaller guys? Or does their design just prevent them from working well for anyone on bigger days? Without going narrow (which i hate...anything below 31" seems narrow to me ), is there a type of board that excels for those bigger days?

i just demoed a Hero yesterday...and now it's part of my quiver. i think some previous comments that the Hero wouldn't surf well due to its wideness are off base. the tapered tail made this board feel so much smaller than its width would suggest and at 6'3" (my height) i appreciated the width towards the nose for my normal stance.

i demoed it because I own an 8'10" Fanatic Allwave which i feel is a bit tippy, though it surfs very well. but falling off that thing quickened my fatigue and therefore shortened my sessions. i fell off the Hero twice over a 3 hour period (by 'fell' here i mean for no apparent reason...i certainly fell more than that while surfing it) . And i personally think it surfs better than the Allwave. I think the thinner rails account for both the Hero's better surf-ability and the overall thickness of the Allwave makes it a bit top heavy and less stable (i feel that about most of the Allwaves except when you get to the 9'10" where everything seems to be perfectly proportional).

both are great boards, and the Allwave certainly gets its share of praise around here, but i think the Hero doesn't get the praise it deserves for slightly larger folks who want to surf.

SUP General / how to catch waves on smaller board?
« on: December 30, 2012, 04:52:39 AM »
i recently went from a 10 fter to a 9 fter. besides the balance issues, i just can't seem to catch waves on the 9 fter...i miss 90% of them.  i usually miss the wave cuz i feel i'm late into it, which isn't a problem on my 10 fter. but when i try to compensate and leave earlier, i feel i'm too early and just getting swallowed by it.

i've never prone surfed before, and only been SUSing for about 2 years now. any helpful tips out there for me? thx in advance.

SUP General / board length vs wave size
« on: October 06, 2011, 05:25:11 AM »
i'm a newbie to the sport of surfing w/SUP (and have never 'plank' surfed either), and really have no clue about which SUP boards i should use in different wave conditions. i've read thru this forum a bit on the topic, but cannot seem to get the info i'm looking for.

i've read that longer boards are best for small waves...and for bigger waves. hmmm. my 2 boards are 11'6" and 10'. for many those might both be long boards..for me one is long, the other not so much. in my typical conditions, small waves are ankle-waist, medium waves are waist-chest, big waves are head+. not sure if my size is relevant, but i'm 6'3", 210 lbs.

so can anyone tell me if there is a standard answer on what board is best for which type of waves? thanks.

Gear Talk / South County Turtle...A+
« on: September 11, 2011, 06:57:56 AM »
after asking around about my next board, i finally decided on a South County Turtle.  I'm coming from the NSP 11'6".  I'm just learning to surf, but that's really all i want a SUP for anyway. Cruising around to me is boring (unless i'm in some place new).

Well, the Turtle has been everything i hoped it would be and more. It is as stable as the much bigger NSP, and for my level of surfing talent this board makes me feel my learning progress is excelerating quickly. I've tried narrower boards, but i just feel the energy expended in trying to balance myself reduces my actual surf time.  The Turtle is rock solid, and i've been out in head high (which is admittedly beyond my level, but ya gotta learn sometime) and still had fun.  I've occassionally gotten too close to shore on both my NSP and the Turtle and hit sand with both boards...the NSP had been damaged...the Turtle was completely unscathed.  Not something I should be doing, but it's nice to know the Turtle can take my mistakes.

Completely satisfied with this board especially as it's cheaper than any of its competitors (as far as i've looked).  Right now i cannot imagine a better board for me (btw, I'm 6'3", 210 lbs) and my skill level, but when i feel the need to 'reduce', South County boards will be first on my radar.
