SUP General / Vent Plug ?
« on: May 13, 2020, 08:54:33 PM »
Just picked up an older L41, eps board- no vent . It’s a bit of a beater with some repaired dings  but water tight.
Don’t know the volume but it’s :
8’10” x 30” x 4.25”
I live in Santa Cruz but we will likely take this board to Lake Tahoe / Sierras a couple of times during summer .  Board will not be left in direct sunlight or be exposed to extreme heat.
Based on board dimensions and usage ... should I install a vent ?

Gear Talk / Custom board dimensions ???

Last week I was seeking suggestions for my next board.  I appreciate all of your feedback and I have decided to go custom with a local shaper as the price is very competitive.  I basing the shape based on some of the suggestions given in my previous thread.  Thank you!

I'm 170 lbs, experienced surfer, been SUPing for about a year.
I mostly flatwatwater in the ocean, but I definitely surf my SUP when the surf is in the 2-3ft+ range.

So essentially I am looking for an all around board that works well in surf (mostly point break/rock reef waves), but also works very well in flat water (typicalhttp://vernorsurfboards.com/sups.html# paddles for me are 1-2 hours, work out).

I tried a laird arrow 10.6 this one was narrow 28 3/4 wide.... Very tippy.

So next I demoed this Vernor SS Hamilton.

The one I rode was 10.4 x31 x 4.5/8.  Quad

I really like it, but it's surprisingly similar to the Riviera 10.6 I have.
So I am going to go custom based on the Vernor SS hamilton and of course get shaper input.   But I would like your thoughts as well to tweak the measurements a little bit, so it's not so "big, slightly dogfish" yet still makes a great all arounder.

Essential I am thinking of making it a bit thinner... 4.1/4 or 4
and a bit narrow: maybe 30.  Length stays at 10'4.

I hope I am not over thinking it!  But I know an inch of width and 1/2 in thickness can make a difference.

I am hoping that tweaking it won't hamper it's flatwater cruising (glide), while improving the surf factor.  Getting a custom board is a great way to support the shapers, though I want to make sure I doing it right!  Thank you for your feedback.

SUP General / All around Question about All around board
« on: October 22, 2013, 11:51:42 AM »
Hello online paddle community.  I am new here, but I have been paddling for about a year with years of ocean/surf experience.  Needing suggestions on next board.  Here is some background info.

Weight: 175
Height 5'11"
Active in good shape, 39 years old.

When there are waves, I surf.  But I have really enjoyed paddling lately when it's flat or small.  I paddle regularly, 2-3 times a week.  Most  paddles are about 90 minutes, 2-3+ miles. But I am definitely catching some 2-3ft. waves along the way.  I really enjoy surfing it!  Occasionally I will take out my paddle board and just surf it, but usually it's a more touring/surfing.  I do like the traditional longboard outline, though I am open to other shapes.

Current Board:  Riviera (epoxy)
Length: 10'6"
Width: 32"
Thickness: 4 3/8"
Volume: 171.1 Liters

The Riviera appears to have pretty good glide for typical paddles/workouts, flat water.  But it seems a little too big, doggish, on the waves.

So essentially I am looking for something that is just as good (or close) for flat water, but will surf a little better.  Again, wave size 2-3+, any bigger I take out traditional surfboard.

I am thinking of the Laird Arrow 10 6 or the 10 0.  I know they are similar to the specs of the Riviera, but pulled in a couple of inches in width and a little thinner.

I can also get a deal on a custom board.  Though not sure of what dimensions, rocker. etc. to consider.

Any ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated!
