Whitewater and River SUP / Ocean Waves on the Hala Atcha
« on: November 29, 2017, 10:30:10 PM »
Decided to take out my new Hatcha out in the surf. Was pleasantly   surprised at its capability.

I was just stoked it would work in a pinch or possibly for travel.

Anyone else try this?

Whitewater and River SUP / Body armor
« on: October 30, 2017, 08:49:06 PM »
I did a search on old threads but would like a more updated opinion/suggestions on body armor.

Lower body protection? I know a lot of people wear leg protection but hips and coccyx seem important to protect.  Not sure what to do when wearing a wetsuit.  Something like this under?
https://www.sixsixone.com/exo-short-black

Or more burly hip protection like...
https://m.dickssportinggoods.com/p/nike-pro-mens-hyperstrong-core-football-shorts-16nikahyprstrngshftc/16nikahyprstrngshftc?camp=CSE:DSG_pg46569_ecom_PLA_452&gclid=Cj0KCQjwm9vPBRCQARIsABAIQYcgpUv9J020f08an74VmELSiSBdy-ZnU8U3BqkwDqtvuoGe6qHcaVIaAjw7EALw_wcB

Only worried that may be really tight under a wetsuit.

And for upper body...

Overkill????

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks.

I have an ocean background and I've been paddle surfing  for probably 10 years.  We have a local Hala dealer and I have been demoing their boards.  The Hala Gram is a blast in the wave but I'm looking for some  something I can start doing some maybe class two and three rapids with also.  That board is a bit too small.   I was pretty excited about the Hala Atcha and they have a 9'6" but it feels too big. Was thinking of buying the 8'6" blind and then saw the bic.  I cannot seem to find hardly any reviews on that board or videos of it in action.  To me,  The rocker looks a little flat.

I'm 190 lbs by the way.

Thanks for any thoughts.

SUP General / Ticket for no PFD on Oregon Lake
« on: August 02, 2014, 10:26:36 PM »
After about 8 years of SUPing I have never been stopped by anyone for a PFD and I was quite surprised to not just be stopped the other day but actually ticketed for $260.  A friend of mine got a ticket for going through a school zone at twice the posted speed limit and received a ticket for half that much.  Let's see... endangering the lives of children is less of an offence than some outside remote chance that having a PFD will save my life in flat water while standing on a giant floating device.

OK, enough of a rant:   I'm trying to decide if I will fight this is court:

Does anyone know when SUPs became classified as vessels?

And does anyone know if there is any legal argument for this clause on the Federal Regulations.
 (c) Racing shells, rowing sculls, racing canoes and racing kayaks are exempted from the requirements for carriage of any Type PFD required under §175.15.

Thanks.

Gear Talk / Vent Plug - Traveling and Rain
« on: March 22, 2012, 07:09:46 AM »
I'm pretty good about opening my vent plug for changes in temp or traveling over passes.  However, when it is pooring rain water gets in my board bag.  Temps won't be changing that much but elevation will change from about 2,000 feet to 4500 feet and then eventually back to sea level.  Is this sufficiant air pressure difference to damage boards in general?  It is a custom board.

Sidebar: Here is a video of atmospheric pressure crushing a can,  and then my attempt at an explanation.

I get tired of trying to come up w/ workouts so I thought I might get some ideas from you people on the forum.  I'll start by posting a recent workout.

400 warm up

4x100 on 2:00 (go faster each 100 ~ think that is called decending)
4x100 on 1:45 (go faster each 100)
2x100 on 1:30 (1st one easy and the second one fast)  (probably should do 4 here but why should I really when no one is there to hold me accountable)

4 x 75 ~ 1st 25 moderate breathe every 5th stroke ~ 2nd 25 i pretend like i'm diving under waves as i make my way mostly under water to the other side.  The last 25 hard breathing every 7th stroke.

400 swim

100 easy

2200 yards if my math is right

Gear Talk / kids paddle
« on: August 20, 2011, 10:23:37 AM »
My five year old has been paddling lately and i was curious what other people are doing for kids paddles w/o spending a fortune.  This is an old wood paddle(canoe?) but the blade is a mile long.

SUP General / What is needed for small rental biz
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:22:16 AM »
Medford/Ashland OR  is a bit slow to get started w/ folks flat water paddling.  Whereas Bend, OR has been going strong for awhile.

This summer is the first time i've gone to the local lakes and occasionally see another SUPer.  I have been thinking about buying a few boards for next summer and hanging out at the lakes to see what the rental interest is.

Questions:
1)  Insurance?  what kind and where to buy?
2)  release forms?

I'm sure there are other big questions but those two come to mind first.

Thanks for any thoughts

Gear Talk / oxygen for long hold downs
« on: August 09, 2011, 04:21:36 PM »
I won't ever likely need such a thing for the ankle biter surf i'm usually in, but was wondering why big wave surfers don't use a small tank of oxygen to squeeze in a few breaths during long hold downs.  Seems to me that it could be designed to fit into an impact vest?

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Lake Yellowstone - wetsuit? wind?
« on: June 11, 2011, 05:25:06 PM »
we are leaving for yellowstone in a week and staying at bridge bay.  I am taking my 10'2" sup w/ a mast track.
Anyone sail there before?  sail size for my sup?  Thinking of a 4.7 to play it safe.  I don't want to lug a bunch of sails.

Also, I do have a 5/4/3 wetsuit but right now have my 3 mil suit packed.  Any suggestions one way or the other?

thanks

Random / How do you brew? Your favorite coffee brew method
« on: December 28, 2010, 05:27:36 PM »
I'm a coffee snob light.  Light, because I konw there are way more extreme coffee snobs out there.

I have two favorite Brew Methods:

1) When out at the coffee house:
Straight espresso... well not exactly.  It is a bit strong for even my taste.  But I find if I have the barista add about as much hot water as espresso to the cup, it is super smooth and much stronger than a typical  Americano, which is way too watered down for my liking.  I much prefer the taste of espresso to drip coffee plus it has less caffeine and is less acidic (so I've been told)

2) The ultimate Home Brew : The AEROPRESS
I discovered the AEROPRESS about a year ago and it makes the strongest, richest coffee I have ever had and is only $30.  No need to buy a $500 plus espresso machine to get rich coffee and since I like my coffee between the strength of straight espresso and drip coffee this devise is perfect.  I am so addicted, I take it everywhere and have one at home and work.   Here is a video of the aeropress in action.  This video shows the upside down brew method, which i prefer to the one in the instructions.

This is the best travel coffee maker also... easy to clean and pretty small

Wind Powered / Fin for sailing sups
« on: December 24, 2010, 11:29:03 AM »
I have an older 10'2" PSH custom board i put a mast track in.  I've sailed it on the lakes and a few times in the surf.  I have a small 8" fin(i believe) that came off a Naish 8'4" wave board that I have been using in it.

The board wants to plane but always feels like it is not quite sure if it is really on a plane.  Just thought I'd see what others are using for fins when sailing their sups and if changing the fin might improve 'planeability'.  I was actually plesently suprised at how easy and light of wind it starts to get on a plane w/ but it then seems to 'bog' down.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Sessions / Ankle Biters on the Oregon Coast
« on: December 23, 2010, 10:46:21 AM »

I just had hernia surgery so I was just reminiscing of better times.  This was Thanksgiving weekend at the Southern Oregon Coast in some small surf.  6 weeks until I can play again... bummer

Downwind and Racing / Why is Long Fast?
« on: May 05, 2010, 05:05:55 PM »
Can someone explain why a longer hull = more speed?
It would seem long = increase in friction?
Or does longer just mean you can make a hull narrower, therefore it does not push as much water?

I'd like to clear up my misconceptions.

Thanks.
