Gear Talk / Black Project vs KeNalu shaft texture?
« on: November 01, 2020, 03:50:05 PM »
Been paddling KeNalu paddles for quite some time and like the sharkshin texture on the shafts especially on hot days.  Today I borrowed my friend's Black Project paddle and almost fell over on the first stroke.  The texture on Black Project shafts is opposite of Kenalu!

Black Project texture allows your bottom hand to slide up toward the handle but resists when you try to slide down toward the blade.  My first thought was that this was an installation mistake but turns out this is the design.  Now I'm questioning my entire stroke if this is correct.

SUP General / San Diego Surf History

May have been discussed before but this is the first time I saw it.  Really cool article going back 100 years of SD Surf History.  Makes me realize I need to head to the museum in Oceanside once all this is over

SUP General / Surf Doheny during Ohana Fest?
« on: September 24, 2019, 01:22:41 PM »
Ohana Fest (music festival) is this weekend at Doheny and wondering if anyone has surfed there during the event.  I'm going to the festival on Saturday pm, but thinking about bringing my board and paddling on Sat AM or Sunday.  Assuming it won't be that crowded as parking is no doubt going to be a mess.

Any insight is appreciated

Downwind and Racing / Olukai 2018
« on: April 26, 2018, 05:51:19 PM »
Each year life tries to get in the way but I keep working my way over to Maui for Olukai week...and here I am again!  Really is a great event that unfortunately happens at not a great wind time of year for wind.  There are however worse places to be :)

Wind has been very good all week and I've managed 4 solid runs so far.  Even managed to finally get in a Kihei run with some of our regular contributors: Pono, Headmount, and Covesurfer - accompanied by several more paddlers.  The first 5 miles were the best downwind conditions I have ever experienced.  Almost made up for the grind the bottom half turned into when the wind died.

Unfortunately for Olukai today is the end of it.  For the 2nd year in a row the event weekend looks like crap -  North winds and likely rain.  To top it off they are calling for pretty significant surf on Sunday for the OC-1 event.

Great to be here and to see everyone, but would love to see this event run in July!

Anyone looking for a good impact vest for protection or just a bit of extra float, Patagonia has their R1 for half price.  $74 and they have M-XXL in stock as of now.  I'm 6' and about 200lbs - the XL fits me nicely

Also have a short-john impact suit for $89 if you need some tailbone or hip protection.  XS-XL in stock

Random / Never (and I mean never) read the comments
« on: October 06, 2017, 11:02:39 AM »
Luckily the Zone exists in its own world where a vast majority of posters are just interested in the stoke they find in paddling and surfing, but every once in a while I am bored/foolish/hopeful enough to actually read comments on news articles or other social media sites.  And I regret it every single time.

So learn from my mistakes and don't ever do it!  You really don't need to know what your uncle's unfiltered and ill-informed opinion is on (insert controversial social issue here).  As Outside magazine so well graphed out below, it will destroy hope!

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Puamana?
« on: April 09, 2017, 10:45:19 PM »
Putting together a fairly last minute trip to Maui to get in a few Maliko runs, do the Olukai race, and surf as much as I can.  I've seen mention of a few Zoners staying at Puamana and a decent amount of chatter about surf breaks all around the area, but before settling on a place there I have one important question:

Is traffic going to be a hassle if I need to be driving to the north shore every day?

If it was just me I'd stay in Sprecks or near Paia, but the wife is traveling with and it will go much better for me if we are on the South or West side and she has bike access to beaches, restaurants, shops, etc. when I ditch her to go paddle daily.

Any input is appreciated!

Downwind and Racing / Olympic Downwinder
« on: August 13, 2016, 11:22:05 AM »
Rio 2016 - some pretty solid swells.  And those Estonians know how to downwind!

A few years ago Jim Terrell wrote an articlehttp://www.supracer.com/the-death-and-rebirth-of-sup-racing/ pushing for board size restrictions and a 4 meter board class.  His concern was mainly based on the technology advances being seen in flatwater racing, and the fear that the sport would move away from it's surfing roots and lose it's appeal to the masses.  I'm not a racer but remember thinking that if the sport moved in the direction of Olympic canoeing it would be depressing, but at least stand open ocean paddling and downwinding would retain their surfing roots.

Then I saw this when watching the Maui 2 Molokai race highlights.  This new dugout board from DEEP that was very successful at M2M, and which might be even better suited to M2O, seems to be more "boat" and less "board".  Jimmy Casey and Matt Nottage had top 5 finishes with this, and while those guys would be fast paddling my coffee table, the fact that they chose to race this board rather than their SIC boards says something.

I've never been on a board with such a dugout but imagine they 1) hurt like hell to fall on, 2) make it difficult to remount the board, and 3) have to have some issue with weight when that thing fills with water (I see the drain holes, but still).  Could be a very fast board if you don't plan to fall I guess.

More importantly to me though, it just doesn't look that fun to surf!  Maybe I'm wrong...

They are Aussie made and clearly those are Aussie racers using them - here is a discussion from Seabreeze about the boards

As much as people love this board on the Zone, I just don't find myself using it enough to keep it.  Hardly a mark on it and in close to mint condition.  Would love to sell it to a Zoner who will appreciate it - make me an offer.

Downwind and Racing / Olukai 2016
« on: April 25, 2016, 07:09:20 PM »
The OluKai Hoʻolauleʻa (downwind race) is this coming Saturday and I am headed to Maui to feed my downwind addiction once again!  Last year was my first time participating and I knew immediately that there would be many more in my future.  While the Maliko run itself is special on any given day, there is also something pretty cool about sharing it with 400 other paddlers.  I was blown away by the camaraderie and true aloha spirit displayed by all involved at last year's event, especially considering the level of talent present and the diversity of the field.

I did read that there will be a "staggered start" this year with the elite racers going off first.  Not sure that is the best solution but at least it will be more fair to those competing for top honors than it was in past years.

From the posts here and on FB, it looks like our resident Maui paddlers have had a pretty good run of wind lately.  Arriving on Wednesday and cannot wait to get in on it myself!  There isn't a lot that gets me excited about leaving San Diego but this is certainly one of those things :)

This could have ended very poorly.  As these become more commonplace there are  not doubt going to be some crazy incidents

Downwind and Racing / Kalama Kamp Hood River
« on: July 15, 2015, 02:12:24 PM »
Has anyone attended one of the one-day camps in Hood River?  As a recently created downwinding addict I plan to be in Hood River for a week anyway and just trying to decide whether to spend the day and the $600.

I will email them as well, but is there good one-on-one instruction?  Is it across the board with regards to level of experience?  I'm no world beater but the thought of waiting around on beginner paddlers sounds like the makings for a long day.

I've pretty much talked myself into doing it but just having some last minute doubts.  I've got a few Maliko's under my belt (thanks Headmount) and plan to be back on Maui next spring for more, but don't get much downwind practice here in San Diego.

Don't have to deal with this much in SoCal, but good thing there was nobody on this wave.

Gear Talk / Flexible shaft for racing performance?

Clearly goes against all we "know", but interesting concept.  Though I do like the feel of my KeNalu X-Tuff S
