I was just wondering, for those of you with a quiver of surf SUPs, what factors help you decide which board to take out for a surf session?

My 40th birthday is getting closer (next March actually so plenty of research time!) and was thinking about adding to the quiver as a treat to myself! I gave a 10'8 Jimmy Lewis Hanalei and a 9'5 Jimmy Lewis Striker (I'm very impressed with these boards both with their quality construction and how they surf). I'm wondering what board would complement them and complete my quiver.

I'm 85kg and surf to an intermediate standard all year through in South Wales, UK.

My question is what would you guys go for? I'm obviously a Jimmy Lewis fan and have had excellent service from the UK JL distributor with my previous 2 purchases but I'm open to other options.

The JL 9'1 KWAD and 8'6 Super Frank have caught my eye as well as some of the Sunova boards (10' Style, 9'2 Speed, 9'5 Soul) and the Infiniti New Deal (10' X 29" - may be too pricey). Other brands available in the UK include Fanatic, Starboard, JP, SMIK (I think) and probably a few others.

As you can see, I'm interested in surf sups, so feel free to share your thoughts!

Gear Talk / Help choosing Ke Nalu paddle for surfing!

Hi,
I'm looking to upgrade my paddle to a Ke Nalu and was hoping that some of you could offer advice regarding which Ke Nalu blade and shaft is suited for surfing? How do the Wiki 84 and Ho'oloa 84 compare? Is there a noticeable difference between the elite and xtuf blades? Finally, what shafts are you preferring?
Here in the UK there is about a £60 difference in price between the xtuf and elite paddles. If there's anything that you feel I should also consider then please feel free to mention it!
I'm 5'8" and 85kg and surf shorebreak up to 3ft.

Gear Talk / Angled SUP Rack

I've got a set of angled SUP racks by Nice Rack and I'm considering buying another set. Space on my garage wall is limmited so I was wondering how much vertical gap is required between the two sets. Would the size of the centre fin be the main factor? The dimensions of the boards are 10'8" X 29" and 9'5" X 31".
As always, any advice is greatly appreciated!

Gear Talk / 9'5" Jimmy Lewis Striker vs 8'11" Fanatic Allwave

I have a 2013 8'11" Allwave and a 10'8" Hanalei and, as I'm sure many of you always do,  I'm always day dreaming of my next board. The 9'5" Jimmy Lewis Striker has caught my eye for which i would have to sell the Allwave. The stability of the Allwave is great for me at 85kg but I find that it prefers catching waves late. I surf a beach break and tend to go out up to 3ft so nothing crazy! If anyone has any experience with the striker (and possibly an Allwave), what are your thoughts?

Gear Talk / Cutting down a 3 piece alloy paddle

I've got a spate 3 pieces alloy paddle and plan to cut it down a few inches so that my kids can have a go. The blade is a quite large but should be fine and will save me from having to buy a kids specific paddle. The paddle is one that uses small springed buttons to join the sections together. I'm hoping that it will simply be a case of sawing the shaft and then drilling new holes!
Has anyone successfully done this and if so do you have any advice?

SUP General / Storing a SUP in a boardbag

I was wondering, once my board is completely dry after being out on the water (and rinsed off with fresh water) is it ok to store it in the boardbag? I've read and heard about boards blistering and obviously want to prevent this from happening but I'm also concerned about the board getting dinged in my small garage - bikes, lawn mower, ladders etc! Many of you have said that most dings happen out of the water!
What to you all do with regards to storing your boards- in or out of the boardbag?

Gear Talk / Wetsuit boots for winter SUPing

I went out on Sunday morning for a flat water paddle. It was a beautiful winter's morning here in Wales, UK, with a great sunrise! I noticed that my toes got cold quickly. Air temperature was -1*C and sea temperature at the moment is 8*C.
I wear a pair of 5mm Xcel Infinity split toe boots which are normally fine when SUSing. I was wondering how much difference a pair of 7mm Xcel Infinity round toe boots would make? After reading similar posts here on the Zone, another option is a pair of dive boots e.g Typhoon Surfmaster 6.5mm zipped boots.  I like the idea of zipped boots (they should be less of a wrestle than getting my regular boots off!!) but would the zip let in water and be colder than my 5mm boots?

Gear Talk / Removing and reapplying Railsaver Pro

I was wondering if anyone has successfully removed Railsaver Pro from a board and reapplied to another board? I currently have it on my 10'5 WP but have been thinking if it would be possible for me to take it off and put it on my 8''11 Allwave?
I'm guessing that the use of a hairdryer would help with the removal but would it then still stick well enough to use again?
Any advice would be gratefully received!

Gear Talk / To sell or not to sell?!

Hi! I have a bit of a dilemma whether to sell my Starboard Widepoint 10'5 or not? I also have a Fanatic Allwave 8'11 which I've had for a few months and really enjoy it but is it worth keeping both boards?
Has anyone sold a similar board and regretted it?!!!!

Hi! I've been looking for a thicker leash for my 8'11 Allwave. Does anyone use a Leashlok leash? I think that they may be new here in the UK but look pretty good to me especially as I can't find many other 8mm 9ft leashes.

SUP General / Sanding down fins to make them safer

Following reading about the death of a SUPer due to a terrible accident with his fin, many of you mentioned that you sand down your fins. I am tempted to do this but was hoping that some of you would be kind enough to explain how to make the fins safer by sanding them.
