Travel, Trips, Destinations / Agua Vida-Pavones
« on: September 25, 2014, 06:38:22 PM »
My son and I blasted down there for the big swell that hit Pavones around July 4th and didn't have a place to stay.  I found Shawn's place and he was booked (Pavones was packed to the gills!).  But, he made a phone call and found us a killer deal in a cabin in the foothills 10 mins from town-it was sweet.  Anyway, ended up stopping by a bunch and hanging out w/ him the 10 days we were there and got to know him and Nathalie-awesome folks and super stoked.  The place he has is huge and right on the beach just outside of Pavones by some of the lesser known breaks and was rustic, but very private and beautiful.  Pavones itself was really cool and I was surprised that the waves were good even at the end of the week when surfline was calling it a foot-the sets were still shoulder to head high!  I'd avoided Pavones on smaller swells because of the gamble and always heard it needed the right swell direction for it to get in there.  Glad we went on a big one, but I'd definitely go back on a smaller one!   Oh yeah-bring fins and leashes-no where to get any of that stuff.  Shawn was kind enough to fix both my boards during the trip-boards, big waves and cobblestones don't mix well!

Haven't been on here in a bit-spending all my time in the water!  Anyone have a great idea on a SUP friendly camp outside of CR?  I've been to CR like 30 times and haven't been anywhere else for awhile except PR.  It's rainy season there and would like not to be saturated 24/7.  Looks like there's a good swell coming wherever I end up.  I'd like to not have to spend too long driving and would like a place that'd pick me up and is SUP friendly.  It's getting more and more aggro out there and I just don't want to deal w/ it this trip.  If anyone wants to join, I'd be down.

Gear Talk / Focus Smoothie
« on: April 16, 2014, 02:03:42 PM »
Left my Fanatic Allwave 9.10 in Cali and missed it.  Couldn't find one locally, so I looked around and snagged a 10' Focus Smoothie.  Board is a lot of fun, does a good job of replacing the Allwave and gets in a little earlier.  Had to change the fins to JM's and it'd finally turn once I lost the 9" center fin.  Noserides well and has great stability (6'3" 265#).  I'd say it's one of the better high stability boards I've ridden.  Just thought I'd drop a quick review since I've not seen much on Focus boards.

SUP General / Board broke my leg!!!
« on: December 01, 2013, 10:21:16 AM »
Last session in Costa at Playa Hermosa-My Fanatic hit my leg in the beachbreak and broke my Tibia and tore my meniscus.  Board was unscathed! I guess for 7 yrs of doing it, its pretty lucky.  On crutches for 6 weeks and then, maybe surgery.  Had a ball w/ my sons went to Hermosa, Esterillos, Guiones (Nosara) and a couple other places that will remain unmentioned.  Watch out for that board!

Starboard 14' x 30" x 288L Touring or Laird/Pearson 14' X 30"x 286L Coastrunner?  I'm 6'3" 270.  I found each of them nearby and used at a good price, gonna finally break down and start some flatwater/downwinder paddling this winter between surfable days here in FL.

Gear Talk / SIC RECON 10'6" Comments?
« on: October 31, 2013, 09:20:01 PM »
I ride my 9'10"x 33" Allwave in everything, have a a North Pacific 10'6"x 31, Cannibal 10'4"x 31.5, Infinity Phoenix 9'6"x 32" and a Dolsey Tuna 11'6"x 32".  I'm torn between a Starboard Hero and the SIC Recon 10'6".   The Fanatic is the board I'm most comfortable with and enjoy the most in overhead waves, but the Cannibal Turns so damned well.  I want something for afternoon windchop and the evil currents at outside reefs in Central America that is Stable and turns great.  The Cannibal is awesome on the wave, but is flat as a plank and you have to angle it a TON or stand right on the tail in bigger waves.  The North Pacific is a fall-fest in bad chop and I wouldn't take the Phoenix or Dolsey out for different reasons.  Has anyone ridden the SIC Recon in overhead waves with bad windchop?  How stable is it?  At 180 Liters, it sounds like it might be the ticket.  I'm 6'3" 270 if it helps?

Gear Talk / 9'6" Infinity Phoenix and 6'3" 270#
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:56:14 PM »
Got my Phoenix last night at 6 pm.  Went out til dark in usual crappy Florida 1-2 ft side windchop and it blew my mind! Caught like 25 waves in an hr and a half and couldn't believe how fast and maneuverable it was.  I'd have never gone out usually, but had a new board and wanted to see how it paddled-had no expectation of having soooo much fun.  If you live on the East Coast-you MUST HAVE ONE!  I could easily go to a 9.0 or 8.6!!! It was super stable, unreal fast, but could throw rail to rail amazingly.  I couldn't believe the speed it'd generate and got into tons of little bumps I'd have never have gotten into on on my rather large quiver. Even nailed a bunch of long floaters on 1-2 ft.  I can prolly surf this board EVERY day here, except when it gets too big.  The Probox Larry Moonfins are AMAZING!  More to come...

SUP General / Board from NC to FL
« on: August 22, 2013, 05:48:48 PM »
Hey guys, just bought a board in Wilmington, NC and I live in Flagler Beach, FL (just south of St Augustine).  I figured I'd put a shout out and see if anyone's coming my way from NC that'd be willing to transport it.  There's a $100 bill in it if anyone's interested.  I live 5 miles off I95 and can meet anywhere from Jacksonville on down.  If you're so inclined, shoot me a pm and we'll get it set up. Thanks, Bigbear
