SUP General / Paddler saves 7 year old off of Pleasure Point

CAPITOLA >> A 7-year-old boy was saved by the efforts of a good Samaritan on a paddle board, a Central Fire rescue swimmer and a State Parks rescue watercraft after being swept into the ocean at Pleasure Point Sunday afternoon.

According to Central Fire Battalion Chief John Walbridge, the boy was on the beach at the base of the 36th Avenue stairs with his mother when he was washed into the ocean just before 1 p.m.

His mother leapt into the water in an effort to rescue her son, but the strong current dragged the boy out to sea rapidly, Walbridge said. When a paddle boarder spotted the boy struggling in the water, he paddled to the boy’s location and helped him on to his board. The mother was able to safely return to shore.

A Central Fire rescue swimmer entered the water at 36th Avenue and swam out to the 7-year-old victim and the paddle boarder.

“There were storm conditions out there; a lot of cross swell and unpredictable peaks and dips,” Walbridge said. “It was very disorganized and challenging.”

A State Parks rescue watercraft picked up the victim and the rescue swimmer and transported them back to the Santa Cruz Harbor where the uninjured boy was reunited with his mother.

Sessions / Bali Weekend

3 days of very enjoyable surf in Bali.  Surfed just south and just north of the tower off of Sanur Beach.  I was in Jakarta on business anyways, and met a friend who came all the way from Moscow for the weekend.  Day 1 - waist high - great conditions for getting accustomed to the reef.  Day 2 - several shoulder to head high sets.  Getting the rental board down.  Day 3 - caught several 1.5 OH.  Came back with a big smile on my face and got out the day before the volcano shut down the airports.

First 9’ 5” Sunova Speeed in the States, or so I’m told…

I have lots of balance work to do before I’m on a 8’ 10” Speeed at 67 years old…  I’m only 59 y.o. and this is the SHORTEST board I’ve ever ordered.

Big Shout Out to JimK for getting me on time, safe delivery from Oz to California!

The board looks awesome, very light at 18 lbs.  Nice pad, with built in stomp pad in the back. Mast insert just in case…

Now all I need is some swell!

Gear Talk / Mini Foote on order...

PB bragged on Bill Foote's 10'4" Triton so loud n juicy it piqued my interest.  Got to talking to Bill (Foote, not Pono) and decided on that big boy's 'sassy lil' sister' (still a big mama @ 10' x 32") 
Gonna pick it up in Kauai next month, take it for a few test drives, then figure out how to get it back to Cali
Almost kinda maybe got permission from the wife this last weekend.... (I'll still catch it, but survive...)

Share the Stoke / Capitola Sunset

Went to Capitola at sunset this evening... last minute decision 'what the heck, better to have paddled than to never have tried at all'....  Grey overcast was illuminated by the setting sun as I got in.  School surf club on the inside on wavestorms.  I waited on the outside for a while, 100 yards out from the lineup.  Let a few pass to size up the break... sure enough, some are peaking up plenty enough to give me a ride.  To top it off, one of them bucks me off so I'm not even dry.  Drop in to one and take it for a nice cruise, kick out just as I'm approaching the grom proner lineup (no bad blood - I'm not in anyone's way)

Back out for another one.  I'm on my very old, but new to me, Starboard Blend soft top.  11.2 x 30 inches.  Sometimes challenging for me re width, but turns on less than a whim and plenty of glide.  Worked out well this evening.  Caught a couple more and realized everyone else has gone back in.  I'm catching one back to shore by the light of streetlights and sound of the Brittania merrymakers.

SUP General / Da Bump is gone...

Woohoo for central kalifornia...  Monday rocked, Toozday i had to go to work..., Wed, Thurs, Fri we were out with Dawn Patrol at Sharks, 3/4 days with my son.  Does it get better?  Even met (Shout out to SWstrly and WD) on his Hammer...  Most days Alex is riding his 10.6 legacy naish nalu, today he rented a SIMSUP 8.8 to try out... wasn't stellar cause the bump wuz largely gone, but he enjoyed it and is looking with longing eyes on my 10.3 Hammer now that he understands wot a chizeltail means

No sale from the rental of the SIMSUP but we are pretty close to dialed in on boards.

Me 6.1 220 nekkid (don't look... u don' wanna see)

Heading out tomorrow again, but Da Bump is gone, I'll be on my aircraft carrier: 12' Pearson Arrow Laird pickin up WHATEVER COMES

And Alex has gotta sleep in, get some rest, and focus on preppin' for the first day of school!  Go Alex!
