Gear Talk / third time a charm?
« on: September 15, 2016, 07:56:21 AM »
So I've purchased 2 boards so far (both in my sig).  The Elite Touring, the last purchase, while I thought was going to be stable enough for me, is just no fun to ride, just because I really dislike the tippy feeling (and I hate sharks, too).

I'm willing to give it one more try before just packing in with this sport.  I've tracked down a couple Starboard Atlas's.  At 33" wide, would this model give me a good amount of added stability over the 14' x 30" wide Elite Touring?

SUP General / Fin design questions
« on: May 31, 2016, 06:57:37 AM »
Hi All,

Got the Hybrid fin this past weekend.  I unfortunately didn't get a chance to paddle it yet, was busy all weekend, but after hearing such promising things about added stability, I was curious exactly what makes the difference over a stock fin.  It looks like there's a couple extra square inches of area.  Is it the shape?  Or a combo of both?

Does anyone have a hybrid fin they'd like to sell?  I'm looking for one.

Does anyone have any experience with this fin, especially for adding stability to a board in flatwaters and maybe some light chop?

I can't seem to find much mention of it.

Gear Talk / Looking for a wider board
« on: January 11, 2016, 02:06:02 PM »
Well, I'm back for more......

6'1", 205lbs, almost all flatwater paddling in Tampa Bay and the Gulf. First bought a JL Blade 2, was a little too narrow, so I picked up a Starboard 14' Touring Elite which is 30" wide.  I figured this was wide enough, but I guess my balance really stinks, cause I'm still struggling to stay up most of the time.  If its calm, I can stay up, but its work.  If there's a little chop, forget it.

I honestly just want to paddle and have fun and put less time into struggling just to stay out of the water.

Gonna have to be used, so I'mm keep my eye out, but was thinking about the 11'6" Jimmy Lewis Cruise control at 32" wide.  I also saw the SIC Recon 11.11 which is 31" wide and seems like it should have some stability.  I guess I'm trying to find something that I'll be comfortable on, without just going to one of those 36" XL wide monsters.

Any other suggestions for a wider board that isn't a total dog in the water?

Gear Talk / Child surf boards
« on: September 28, 2015, 07:29:36 AM »
Took our SUPs to the gulf yesterday and one of our friends had a Hang Ten foam surfboard for her 9 year old daughter.  There was a very small beach break, but it was really neat to see my 9yr old get up on a wave (for a couple seconds with a good push).

I've never surfed before and in all honestly, I haven't been to any surf shops yet to inquire, but wanted to get your thoughts on a first board for a elementary aged kid.  I was surprised at the foam, but it was nice and light.  The mom said she went into a shop and this is what they recommended.  I guess I would have associated foam with "cheap".  Just thinking it might be nice to get something for them to try.

Gear Talk / 116 sq inch paddle blade - too big?
« on: July 13, 2015, 07:14:26 AM »
I'd like to have an extra paddle around, maybe for a guest or even the kids to use.  Found a Riviera adjustable on craigslist, along with a Onyx PFD which I was thinking about getting anyway.  I think it could be a good package deal, but I'm worried about the big blade.  Is something like that going to be way too much for an elementary aged kid, even if the length is ok?

Gear Talk / New Board - Pretty happy with this CL find
« on: June 07, 2015, 07:23:05 AM »
Have been looking for a while, as many know.  I've come close several times to just getting out the credit card and ordering new, but kept checking Craigslist several times I day.   I think it finally paid off.

Friday nite I was doing my regular search and came across a 2015 Starboard 14' Touring Elite, which was one of the boards I was very interested in.  Included with the board was a QB Kanaha FG paddle, coiled leash and a nice 2-SUP garage rack unused - all for $700.   My first thought was that someone was playing a joke or something.

Got in touch with the seller Sat am and made plans to make the ~4 hour one way drive Sunday, today.  They called back an hour later and said they were getting a ton of calls and that it was really better for them to sell it today.  So after a frantic hour of trying to change some plans, I drove up and picked up the board.  And I tell you, I couldn't be any happier.  Board is in really good condition.  A few skuff marks here and there but nothing big at all.

Paddle is in great condition, too.  The guy said he's had the whole setup for 3-4 months and just didn't work out for him and the family.  I'm planning to cut down the QB paddle today for my wife.   She's been using my paddle (too big for her) so this was a win for both of us.

One question - there seems to be some rail tape on the board, although it's much smaller than the RS Pro Large I have on the Blade 2.  The seller said it came like that on the board?  I think I'd like to remove this and put on some RS Pro, but just wanted to ask to anyone familiar with the board, if this is somehow integrated into the construction?  I'd tried to put a fingernail underneath it to see if it'd pull off and it wasn't easy, but I didn't want to mess with it until I knew for sure what it was.

A special thanks for their time to the 2 Zoner dealers who priced me some new boards.  And also a thanks to the 2 Zoners in Jax for replying to my msg yesterday.  I thought I was perhaps going to lose this deal (before I could change my schedule) and was trying anything to be able to pick up the board.

Happy to get out on the water today instead of just reading about it.

Gear Talk / production vs custom board
« on: May 29, 2015, 08:36:33 AM »
During my journey finding a board for myself, I ended up talking to Brian Hovninian from Hovie who is now local to me.  I told him sort of what I was looking for and to my surprise, he said that he could make something specific to me and the price was pretty reasonable - about the same as what I was thinking about paying for a new board.

Assuming construction is similar between the production and custom board, and assuming your shaper knows what they are doing (from what I've read, Brian certainly qualifies), is there any reason you wouldn't chose a custom board?

Gear Talk / Starboard Atlas vs Cruiser?
« on: May 15, 2015, 12:22:59 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with the Atlas or Cruiser to maybe point out some of the differences for flatwater cruising?  Also, does anyone have experience with riding the ASAP boards?  Are they too heavy?  Do you wish you upgraded to another better construction?

I'm still checking craigslist 5x a day but am getting sick about thinking about SUP'ing and might just pull the trigger on a new board soon.  I think I would like a SB if I buy new.

I found:
2012 Cruiser in AST Silver for $1300 delivered
2014 Atlas Wood for $1350 delivered
2014-5 Atlas ASAP for around $960 delivered with a free adj cheapie paddle

SouthEast / Anyone making a trip from Jax to Tampa anytime soon?
« on: May 14, 2015, 12:54:08 PM »
There's a SUP in Jacksonville that I'd like to pick up, but as a 1 car family, I'm having trouble scheduling/making the 8 hour round trip to go pick it up.  Just curious if anyone would be able to transport from Jax to west central FL.  Even Orlando or something might help out a whole bunch.

LMK and thanks!

Gear Talk / Starboard - Starshot vs ASAP vs AST
« on: May 08, 2015, 06:10:44 AM »
I think these are all different construction methods?  Can anyone give me the cliff notes or put them in order of strength and weight?  I think ASAP would be the heaviest and least durable, but I'm not sure about the others.

Looking at a few boards like the Atlas and Cruiser and just want to be sure I'm really comparing what I'm looking at.

Is it AST >> Starshot >> ASAP

Gear Talk / How bad could a $450 board be? (that was $1800?)
« on: May 06, 2015, 03:03:13 PM »
I'm in S. Fla on business, heading home tomorrow.   Been looking for a $750-$800 used board for a while now.   I did,  just today,  talk to a shop that has a JL Cruise Control for $450 that's "rough".   The thing is,  it's in their warehouse  and I can't get a pic and going this way home,  thru Jupiter,  will add a couple hours to my 3.5 hour drive.

I want a good deal on an allrounder and would love a Cruise Control,  but I'm just worried this thing may be just too used.  Is their such a thing?

I had a line on a used Starboard Cruiser that was listed for $1200 but he stopped responding when I said I was trying to stay around 750.   😀:)

Gear Talk / Starboard Widepoint as an allrounder?
« on: April 26, 2015, 04:03:12 PM »
A little background as usual - 6'1" and 200lbs, a total beginner, bought a JL Blade II at 29" wide and have decided I want to buy something used that might have some more stability for cruising around the bayous and Tampa Bay.  And MAYBE get out to the gulf to try and catch a wave or two for the first time.  I'll work my way up to the Blade.

The Starboards have caught my eye, but I'm open to anything with a good name that comes up used.  Had a chance to snag a good condition Starboard Big Easy in the Silver AST that I like so much for $500 last week.  I'm still real bummed for missing that deal  - I had an email snafu and missed the reply and it ended up selling later that evening.

Anyway, there's a 10'5" Widepoint a few hours south of here.  Did a little research and most, I think, have said they were happy with the glide, but I think most of the users were mostly in the surf, which will be opposite of me.  Is the widepoint (or Big Easy) something I should even be considering?

NSP and the Fanatic fly also seem to have nice 11' long and 31-32" wide boards that I think would be suitable for me, but again, its all what comes available.

Gear Talk / BIC DuraTec Youth 8'4" - $160 on Amazon
« on: April 24, 2015, 07:36:40 AM »
I think this is a pretty stupid cheap price.

Looks like it would be ok for someone less than 80lbs.  Was looking for something my 8 and 11 year old boys could ride and came across this
