SUP General / Re: strapped SUP anyone?

As I suggest in the article, start making note of where is your front foot when you ride a wave... you don't want to do like Josh Stone, who just guessed and put the strap too far forward...

SUP General / strapped SUP anyone?
« on: April 16, 2011, 10:46:07 AM »
Hi everyone,

I don't do many SUP related posts on my blog, but when I do I make sure to report here. Specially when they are about something "relatively" new that might interest some of the Zone readers.

I put a front foot strap on my board and here's my review: http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/2011/04/strapped-sup-anyone.html

Thanks for reading!

Answers, in reverse chronological order.

H20man: I didn't purchase it (I doubt it would be a best seller because of the reason Bill mentions), I made it. Super easy.
Clearly you need a helmet. Make four holes on the very top (dremel tools work great for that) so that they can allow two hose clamps to go through. Buy two hose clamps (two bucks) and thread them through the holes. The last piece of equipment you need is a stick. I used a piece of broken carbon paddle shaft that I found in the trash bin of the surf shop I work for. It's that simple.

crtraveler: you just gave me a great idea. Sooner or later, I'm gonna shoot a wave from both points of view: from the front and from the helmet stick and then make a video that shows both, so that one can compare the different sizes the wave appears to be depending on where you put the camera.
The wave in the helmet stick video was AT LEAST head high at the take off.
This wave below was AT MOST knee high at the take off, but it looks kinda bigger because the camera is down on the board.
session 1: SUP
In both cases, it's really hard to judge the wave size.

Bill: first, I want you to know that I always enjoy your writings. Second, you're right: this is not a mount for shy guys!
I chose that day to try it out, because, as I say in the post, the waves were weird and a bit junky (for the very high Maui standards). Hence, spoiled as we are, there were not many people out. But now that I know how good it looks, I will sure take it out again. Ideally, I would like to film a belly high wave at 1000 peaks and show how I can really turn my 7.4!

Thanks guys, nice inputs!

OMG Bill, yesterday wave sailing up the coast was epic by all means...
I feel extremely privileged that I can enjoy the waves no matter what the wind does...

The Maui crew already knows what an amazing week of glassy surf we just had.
I thought about sharing some photos with the rest of the zone...

SUP General / Re: What injuries has everyone suffered from SUP surfing?
« on: November 22, 2010, 10:35:33 PM »
Bruised kidney.
The wave got a bit too steep at Lanes and I free felt in front of it. Unfortunately while hitting the water, I was hit by my board (thrown down by the lip) on one side of my back and that did not feel good.
It was like 5 years ago with my heavy 12.6 Timpone.
Went back home and laid on the couch until I needed to go to the bathroom. The vision of red pee convinced me it was approprate to go to the ER and get an MRI.
Could have been a lot worse, the kidney was only bruised and not ruptured...

Jeremy, you have all my respect.
Actually you always had it from the very first time I met you at the very beginning of SUP surfing... just love your humble attitude.
See you out there! (maybe not at Pier one!.. I'm too old for that!!)

Don't know the Tiki, but at 155 pounds, I love my 7.4x29.5.
VERY easy to turn, not super fast but not super slow either. I used it up to head high and had the feeling it might be a bit too wide for bigger waves.
But I keep learning something every time I use it, so I might be wrong...

GoPro cameras rock.
session 1: SUP

Next big improvement will be a radio remote control to install on the paddle...

Wind Powered / Re: Sail Recommendations for Big Red
« on: August 12, 2010, 11:27:00 PM »
Hi JD,
I've done tons of sailing on an SUP and I strongly recommend a Hot Sails Maui Superfreak. Their soft feel is a perfect match for the smooth sailing you'll do on an SUP.
BTW, the SO big red is a great board for light wind wave sailing.

14
I've never sailed any of them, and you say you're not looking outside of those two, but this is a major bragging opportunity I can't miss... :)

I love the Starboard 10.5 for light wind wave sailing. Ending up on the cover of Windsurfing mag is not the only reason. That board is really fun.

It strongly depends on what kind of conditions you sail. You mention the size, but what's the wave period (and wind direction)? The smaller the period, the better a shorter board will be. And the 10.5 will float you just fine.

Oh yeah, the bragging: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_czUfPbJKZic/S7I2py9mVAI/AAAAAAAAGeM/t02Ejkd0xj8/s1600/windsurfing+cover+real.jpg

Puff,
as I wrote, while I do believe in lessons and forums (see my reply on your thread about backside turns), I also believe that some things cannot be explained. I don't think there's much of a contraddiction there.
Some things can be explained some others can't. I hope I'm wrong and someone comes up with a magic formula for you (and for me!!) of where to stay on the board.

What's great about SUP surfing is that is very, very, very easy. At least compared to regular surfing. That brought (and will keep bringing) people in the water that would have never tried surfing (or tried and gave up).
So, my "not sure you're going to like my tip", was related to the fact that regular surfing will be way harder than SUP and I'm not sure you're going to like that. Sorry about the confusion.

Bill (and others), thanks for the kind words. You're right, the cammar/gp thing is confusing. I should change my account from cammar to gp... but I don't want to lose my Rincon status!!! :)
