Posting for a friend: I Kite-Foil for 2 years (small kite, big front wing, strapless) and would like to foil also when there's no wind. I never surfed with a surfboard or a SUP and would like to read your advices: Which will be easier and safer for me to start with? Better to practice without a foil first? The phantom 1480 by F.One would be good to start with (weight 65kg)? * Hoping to get comments from people who had a similar (lack of) background ** Hoping to get comments from people who do both

Wow, thanks! Very valuable feedback. Thanks for your answers. California, with your explanation and extra 2 sessions I think I finally understood the rules of the game. We're doing a late but not very-late takeoff: Catching the wave where it's steep enough to get going but not too late where it's too steep or already starts to break. If something feels not right (steeper than expected, feeling whitewater coming) then bail. In a beach break I tried to position myself at the edge of the breaking are so once I catch the wave I can immediately escape to a whitewater-free zone. Also, once we get to takeoff speed, go up to the foil and go away from the whitewater, which is either riding the wave to the side, or running away forward from the way and going back to it to the side where it's not yet broken.
I also found myself in once session with tiny waves feeling that i was close to the whitewater so i pushed hard on my front foot to make sure i dont get the whitewater eject again. If it wasn't tiny I would've probably ejected away.
Now I understand much better how to avoid such injury again. But on the otherhand, those Taco roll-falls can still occur if you make a mistake so I think I'll get an impact vest and add even some additional padding to continue below it to the lower end of the spine because the amount of enery you put on one spot when you fall hard on the wingtip is very dangerous, I only understood it once it happened to me and I take it as a warning sign and wish to avoid fractured ribs/vertebrae

Fell on the front wing(taco, roll fall).
Tried to catch a wave with my SUPfoil. Wave started breaking while I was trying to takeoff to go out of the steep section before it breaks as I always do, kind of an early takeoff that didn't initiate on time. The (small) wave started breaking with white wash and lots of sudden lift, foil breached and rolled before it even started flying and I fell on the front wingtip ass-first! Luckily it's only an extremely painful very hard bruise.
I'm quite new to SUPfoiling (tons of kitefoiling) but I'm already able to catch waves easily, stay on them for very long(turn,pump) and pump back a few meters
Got me thinking: 1. what's the strategy for avoiding it? taking off early on the top of the wave and ride to the side to escape the high energy of the critical section(whitewater, what I was doing so far but this time got me to a catastrophe) or to drop the wave with a lot of front foot pressure without flying and start flying after the drop ahead of the white wash? abort an early takeoff if it doesn't to succeed by bailing backwards? Should I avoid whitewater/breaking-section entirely with a SUP as this tumbles the whole setup making me fall uncontrolled and rolls the foil?
2. Apparently I cant anticipate all risks yet or ever. My concern is that such a hit it a different location can be much worse (neck, spine, belly, ribs). Do you recommend some protection apart from helmet such as impact vest?
3. Did you hear about severe injuries from falling on the wings other than cuts from sharp wings?

Thanks a lot, you help me every time 🙃 I asked around and the 95L was reported to weigh 6Kg So I'm surprised that it's heavier then your custom, unless your custom is 5Kg.

I'm helping a friend with upgrading his SUP setup: 70 Kg Experienced SUPfoiler, riding reef and beach brakes easily but cannot pump back Riding IWA on a minimal SUP Waves are 2-4ft gutless waves (Mediterranean sea, usually 7 sec period, sometimes 6 and Aiming at rail to rail and pumping back, extending the top end but keeping the low end Should he go for GL/NL? single wing? 2 wing? combine with existing IWA or replace it? Which size? Also, is the GL/NL much easier to pump than the IWA or it's mostly about technique? Thanks

Thanks, it's more clear now. I'm not sure if I should go for 1060 or the 970(160 pounds, small waves). 970 is only 1500sqcm...
Also, I've been told that with my vast kitefoiling experience and preference for a loose ride I should go for ultrashort with 370, sounds realistic?

Thank you all for your advice. The way I understand it is: 1020 low aspect - slower,less glide,idea for an absolute beginner which I am not 1000 - high aspect, previous generation high performance,but i might not be there yet, but I may prefer to upgrade early than have a tough start. also it's previous generation and the current generation is the HPS black series, so in any case, why buy the previous generation? 1050-same as the above but next generation 1060-middle ground between the above options,sounds like the best fit as I am not really experienced with SUPfoiling but not a beginner on the other hand. did I get it right?
for kiting l will probably go for the 760
is high aspect harder in takeoff, meaning, requires more speed, steeper/later takeoff?
If I will go for thr BSC 1060, is it the right size for 1-2ft weak waves of the mediterranean? (74kg,160 pounds) as Axis website says Medium+ waves

Goal Learn SUP foiling in 1ft-2ft and then advance to 3ft waves, learn to pump back.
Background: Kitefoiling Very high level, very active riding style Riding 1ft-4ft waves with no kite power Riding with little power in the kite(small as possible) Using Cloud IX P27 front wing (680mm span, 1400sqcm) SUP (non foil) - Years back, rode a 7’6” (30” wide, 105L) - good riding level
Conditions Israel - waves are small and not powerful most of the time.
I’d like to get a recommendation for 1 front wing for SUP foiling to start with (probably will add more later on for both disciplines) and a stabilizer (Axis only)
Which fuse? short?

Hi, I'd like to purchase one of the Naish Hokua boards. I'd like to ride it in a beach brake with tiny to medium waves(0.5ft-5ft, 30cm to 1.5 meters), for shortboard style riding, not longboard tricks. About me: 73kg (160lbs), 184cm (6ft) high. Only a bit of experience on SUP, but can already ride waves easily and stay in the pocket with a SUP, dont own one yet, rented till now. Lots of experience on regular surfboards surfing and kitesurfing in the waves. Quick learner in water sports and willing to fall more in the beginning instead of upgrading the board after a while to a smaller one.
