Random / Re: Surfers Ear surgery - Chisel method
« on: October 05, 2018, 03:22:39 PM »
Zooport, maybe that could happen, but "The Man", Dr. Hertzel had no problem doing both ears, other than it took longer due to the amount of growth I had developed after about 28 years of Norcal surfing, without a hood or earplugs.  My only hearing loss, the first week, was due to the packing in my ears with the antibiotic ointment, after the packing was out, hearing was back to normal.  Actually, normal is not true as the previous years my hearing had deteriorated due to the blockage, one week after surgery it was better than before an showed some more improvement after full healing.  Other than the usual "dangers" in this type of surgery I don't know why there would be a difference between one or two being done.  In my case I have a large empty area between the ears which provided some cushion for success.

Had the chisel method done years ago by Dr Hertzel (?) in Santa Cruz, Ca.  He is the Dr that developed the technique. All done through the earhole with micro tools.  Flap of skin cut and peeled back, micro chisel the bone growth off, lay the flap back down, pack with antibiotic ointment, He recommends 3 weeks out of the water but ycan maybe be back in 2, depends on how well you heal.  This surgery has no relationship with the ear flap method other then they are both done on the ear.  I believe I have about 17 years free ofno new ear bone growth even with continuing to surf frigid NorCal, with a hood and ear plugs now, however.  I've still got a nice glass tube of the bone growth he took out, looks like coral.  I had both ears done at the same time to save on surgery room costs, only problem was I couldn't hear real well for a week while the packing was in, had to turn the tv way up.  Oh, and the surgery took 6 hours, it's very delicate, make sure your Dr has done more than a few, don't be his training dummy.

Went out on a friend's boat, didn't plan on going, got the offer to go, glad I didn't miss it.  Been using O'Neill wetsuits exclusively since 1964, sure beat trunks in Norcal waters.  Thanks Jack for a lifetime of waves!!!

p06781,

Rarely head north as it entails a lot of driving and becomes an all day event.  Chacala requires a boat ride once you arrive and there is no guarantee of swell.  All the forecast sites, Surfline, Magic seaweed etc. are guesstimates as there are no buoys along the Mexican coast to get swell data, all comes from the North.  That being said going north is worth the drive if for no other reason than to check out the coast.  Potential surf can be found at Platinitos, Santa Cruz, Aticama, Matanchen Bay, Las Islitas, Stoners Point and San Blas.  That whole stretch can be covered in about 2 hrs from San Pancho.  San Pancho gets it's best surf during/following the rainy season.  I'l be down there with my surf buddies from 5/13-21.  We're still trying to get Las Islitas, a potentially mile long wave on a south swell.  It's in the Guiness book.  If you end up down there during our time let me know.

Wetstuff,

Check out Pacific Paddle Surf at pacificpaddlesurf.net.  Adam Finer the owner is also the Mexico distributor for Starboard and always has the latest and greatest in his rental fleet.  He's located in Bucerius and will deliver to your door upon your arrival or will make whatever arrangements you need.

Slatch,
I'm in San Pancho right now, have been for 3 weeks and will be until end of March, things haven't changed with the election of the Donald.  People here are of the same opinion as the majority of the voters in the US.  Nothing is happening of a negative nature, if anything it is a little more crowded due to the great exchange rate.  Still a good/great choice for a little SUP vacation.  Sayulita today head+, Anclote, ankle biters, Burros waist+.  Mariscos outstanding, weather couldn't be better, water warm, little chill in the morning on dawn patrol.

Been to Maui twice, but I'll leave it at that with a little story.  Quite a few years ago before SUP was on the radar went to Namotu in Fiji.  Group was there from Maui, good waterman all.  Asked them why they came to Namotu when they live on Maui.  They're comment, Always crowded, everyone always has their board on the car and knows when and where the swell will hit.  They just wanted a better shot at some uncrowded waves.

Slatchjim,

+1 on the PV area.  It doesn't get epic but it does get quite good.  Pacific Paddle Surf rents new Starboard SUPs.  SUP Mexico in Sayulita has SUPS.  Most of the surf shops in Sayulita have SUPs.  Paddles aren't the greatest so you might want to bring your own.  The time your looking at is perfect for south swells but west swells also work as PV is the same latitude as Hawaii.  Palladium is a good call as it's right on Burrows.  Sayulita is a good call for family as the kids get a very user friendly beach, rent a house walk to the beach and restaurants.  The water is fine in Sayulita except after a big downpour.  Currant exchange 1+21.  I'm writing from my home in San Pancho just north of Sayulita.  Surfed there today waist+.  Lots to enjoy here and not the hustle/hassle of Hawaii.  PS- it's very SUP friendly.

Never stayed at the Palladium, now the Grand Palladium.  I do, however, live part time a few miles north in San Pancho and can tell you that Punta Burros is still located right by the Palladium, hasn't moved.  Check Surfline.com for their Burro's cam to see what's happening.  August is a good month for south swells and Burros likes souths.  It will be hot, it will be humid, it wii rain, GO, you should have a great time.

Dispatch from the San Pancho/Sayulita, Patricia came in about 120 miles south, we got lots of rain, no wind.  Everyone that stayed, hunkered down expecting the worse, main highway packed yesterday with people leaving.
Rained all night into this morning, then the sun came out.  Swell about head high in San Pancho, little smaller in Sayulita, big brown spots at both river mouths, going to wait a day or two for the "good shit" to dissipate.  No big deal flooding or lives lost in this area, dodged a real big bullet.
