Any vector for 'line of sight' navigation to Molokai, using a conservative -- we just want to get there in 5 hours route?  Should you start out aimed for the east end of Molokai, Halawa Valley, and then turn downwind 1 hour into the paddle?  When is a good time to turn downwind for a median track?

What type of weather makes it a fast race?  What are some indicators?  Trades blowing all night at > 10 knots?   Obviously high surf advisory from the East, due to windswell, but that may not be in the for cast for July 16, 2011

I've been asking around about the red streamers?  Does anyone take them, if so, where can I source them on north shore Maui?   Other than a whistle, what else do people carry?  We are going unsupported and trying to catch the ferry.  Is this a bad idea, I hope not, we're DIYers.

Thanks!

Gear Talk / This will change your life -- 8'0" DP
« on: May 12, 2010, 11:52:50 PM »
I've been paddling a 9'2" Maui Dawn Patrol board for the past year or so, it is my day in day out work horse, Maui north shore slop in the bays, Kanaha bluebird days, south side and trading off with my wife.  We liked it so much my wife got one, which I'm sorry to say has a few improvements over my faithful stead, but so be it.

This morning I demo-ed an 8'0" x 28 3/16 x 4, Dave Peterson signature perfect wings and pulled swallow.  I was able to paddle it in light wind and some slop, but haven't had a chance to try it in any sort of swell since the small north west swell is just arriving this evening.  I'm 5'9" and 155lbs/

I don't know that this board will change my life, but it will certainly change my surfing ability. It's a whole new game on the wave.  I'm not (yet) a surfer and may never have skateboard knees and hips, but with this board I am seeing the next generation of the sport and it's going to be really really fun.

I haven't written a gear review since my first board over two years ago.  I can't rate my 9'2" high enough and sometime this week I'll post.  My bro just upgraded to the Maui DP 9'6"x28x4.   One of the great things about the custom boards is how light they are and how thin they feel.  I think we're just now starting to get the volume in the acceptable range.

Not sure if you can tell from the picts, but the finish, polish, paint and glass job is just a thing of beauty.    Here are the stills.

Stay away from the FugiFilm.  Mine lasted less than 10 sessions.

Gear Talk / hyrdro turf alternatives / cheapest pad / 3M PSA
« on: September 20, 2009, 06:37:20 PM »
Hi All, I've bought the hyrdro turf, seconds with the PSA for my last 5 deckpads, and I use it on my 5o5 dinghy as well, but that's a whole 'nother story.   I keep getting nicked on shipping and once I got charged tax, even though I'm out of state.   I like the 3M PSA, it's a no brainer.  I'm not afraid of using the Barge rubber cement (yes, the same stuff I use on the boat and on climbing shoes in days of old) but to be honest, I'm to lazy.

So here is the question:  Is there anything else cheaper (including the shipped to Hawaii)?   62 inches works well for me and I buy them two at a time.  Thoughts?

Folks, I don't have a downwinder, in fact, I've only paddled Maliko to the Harbor a couple of times. How silly will I look showing up at Olukai on a 11'x25" NSP, which, oh by the way is beat.  Don't bother?   Try, it you'll like it?  Some other time?

Any other options?

Francky, how is your back?  Have you mended?  Haven't seen you in the surf in quite some time.

Personally, I like to have my potatoes washed as well, if you leave it me it only happens about once week.  Thank goodness some scientist trained the girl monkey.    Did I miss the point?

Sessions / Big fish at Launiupoko - Woodies Thurs morning
« on: August 15, 2008, 08:53:16 PM »
Did anyone see the big fish on Thurs morning?  Any idea what it was?  I know it had teeth, but I didn't see its face.  Brown dorsal, very big and very close, moving slow. We got out of the water, as did the few long boarders at Woodies.

Board made it to Nor Cal with possibly just a small spider, nothing more.   We wrapped it in two packing blankets after cardboard along the rails.   Then bagged it in the StandupZone bag.  $200 from our friends UAL at the Maui desk, ouch.    Kazuma exported to Cali, just ordered a replacement!

Far out!  What's it really like, out there paddling?  How long does it take?  How hot is it?  What do you see?  I'm hooked on SUPing in the break but gotta say that an open ocean run sounds like fun.  How hard is it?   Winds on Saturday made for some of my best days ever at Kanaha.

You may be the only one on the island who doesn't have noodle arms.   We need a day of rest.   ;D

Folks,  What's the experience been with checking a 10' x 31"  SUP onto United Airlines from Maui to the mainland?  Do you pad your board inside the bag?  I have a StandupZone bag, is this enough padding?    Will United allow me to take check such a large board?  If yes, any idea if there is an extra fee ontop of the the surfboard rate?  Thanks too all.
