Beasho, that is awesome.  I would love to get up there and sup surf that with you, but my 17" wide Barracuda might be tough to SUP...might have to prone it.  Standing on it Downwind is different than standing in chop and paddling for a wave.

We've been getting a ton of super glassy days on Maui this winter.  Here is a short youtube vid to a couple waves from the other morning.  Im using a Lift 100 surf and the NoLimitz 93cm v2.  This is a really good combo for head high waves.  Bigger than that I like the 60surf.

Pono, you should try the foil drive. I have a friend who just started and he used the Foil drive for a few weeks and now he’s doing it on his own. Even if you never go off the foil drive it’s a pretty good experience especially the new one I think is a lot lighter and the connection underneath the looks better.

Craig‘s board is 9’6” x 16“.

Beasho, I have been working on surfing some of our outer reefs with these same boards. Long mast to Foil and a 9 foot or 9 foot 6 x 16 is a gun that gets you in early and a gun hold steady on bigger waves. Hopefully, I can come out with some footage soon!

Thanks David!  Good to hear that from you!  Kane and I were talking about how we could get more quality footage out this next downwind season.  This is a good start.

So its been years since I've been on here!  So cool to see lots of the same names I know and remember for the SUP DW days!  I've been fully engaged in foiling for about 7 years, and the focus was always downwind.  I wanted to share a video that we did last week on a decent Maliko day.

Kane, Andrea, Craig and I all run NoLimitz masts and they asked us to go do a downwind video.  I have probably only done 3 runs since August (M2O) so I was a bit out of practice and on a new board....but it all came together ok.  Kane was absolutly killing it, tearing the place apart.  He was on a foil that he designed, so I have no idea what it is, but it was a surf foil.  I think Andrea, Craig and I were all on the Lift 120 with Kane tails.

I would have used a 110 for a day like this, but with all the stopping and starting associated with trying to make a video, I wanted somthing that was easy to lift.  Anyway, hope you guys enjoy this and please reach out if you have any questions.  I'd love to get back on the Zone now and again.

Aloha,  Shep

Foil SUP / Re: Getting some new gofoils, what to get?

Its only a couple hundred bucks more and you can get all three.  I'm 175lbs and I use my Kai all the time.  Its true that the Iwa is crazy versatile, but still nice to have one for steeper waves.  I'd opt for the three pack and  get the Maliko 200, Iwa and Kai.

GoFoil just released a lot more wing sizes. The new M-200 makes the Maliko look small.

There is also a Maliko 240 or 280...I can't remember exactly.  It is massive!  Saw Brett Lickle on it this weekend.  He was flying all over and he is probably your size.

I checked out the prone version yesterday.  Heavy and almost 3" rails on the prone model.  In my opinion the tail is too wide on the SUP.  The wide tails drag on the face and the foil provides a ton of stability, so I don't think they are needed.

Thanks for that one Headmount. It may have been an optical illusion but Dave's board had an interesting nose and tail outline.

Dave's board is a 7'2" version of my 6'10". The tail, nose and rails are all crazy but they all have a function. Tail cut away is to help with pumping needed on foil.

HM you are looking good on the ski!!!

Oh and straps....I have been experimenting with a "hooker" strap in the back and a standard windsurf strap in the front.  I think I will go with double straps soon, but the Hooker is easy to get in quick  ;)

Foil SUP / What are you foiling?
« on: September 19, 2017, 07:16:19 PM »
With all the radical new developments in Foiling, I figured it would be good to see what everyone is riding, both foil and boards.  This is my new Foil SUP that I just picked up from Dave Kalama.  This is a 6'10" x 25 x thick...idk how thick.  It floats me though and is pretty stable.  I ride a 8' x 26" regular SUP for good surf.

As you can see, this is not a board like any other SUP board.  This is specifically for foiling.  This has the new tail that Dave has been working on.  It drastically cuts away to help you pump.  It also has "boogie board" rails, which hide volume and don't stick to the water.

Have not had it out in any good surf yet, but I had her bigger sister (7'6"x26) for the last month.  So far, so good!  Can't wait for a swell.

maybe "kick" was too strong a word, because yes, kicking in the traditional sense makes it go up and that is the crux of the whole issue.  "bail" left and push board right may be a better description.  Falling off the back is a problem in bigger surf because it pushes you right into the board and foil.  None of this is an issue on smaller surf, or less top to bottom surf.

Spoke to a very knowledgeable guy here on Maui, that has been foiling for about a year, and his advice for "waves of consequence" was to straighten out in the flats and then kick the foil right as you go left, or vice versa.  The added benefit is that on a foil you can often get around the section, but you don't know till you straighten out and look at how far it is throwing and how top to bottom the wave is.

Foil SUP / Attaching plate mount with through bolts?
« on: September 14, 2017, 03:51:33 PM »
Do you mean put screws all the way through your board?  This will not work. Your board will be destroyed by not only the water but also the force of the foil mast on your unboxed foam. You need a Tuttle box or a mast mount and two large fin boxes installed.
