Have you tried using handles mounted to the deck of the board? I think it would help initiate lift once you’re gliding on a swell and also help with pitch control while foiling.

The stroke from above looks like a parenthesis bracket but keep it straight at the end of the stroke and exit early. Here's a video I did several years ago. In the video I explain how to steer the board while paddling on one side. I failed to mention weight placement in the video. If you are paddling on the right side and you want the board to turn to the right you should put a little more weight on the left side of the board. This will allow the board to slide towards the paddle at slow speeds without dipping the rail and pushing water.

I start with my blade 10-15 inches off the rail of the board at about a 30 degree angle. I'm planting the blade deep for the first couple of strokes and pulling the blade under the board. As I get the board moving I don't go as deep at the catch and I speed up the cadence and shorten my stroke. Pumping during the stoke helps generate speed. I try to keep the board flat with my weight centered. Deep strokes as you're getting lifted often result in hitting your wing with the blade. You can see the angle of the blade and depth of the stroke in the videos below. I'm using the Go Foil NL160 and the Go Foil GL180 in these videos. The NL160 took a lot more strokes and foot movement to get lifted.

How did you rig up your paddle to sling across your back like that?
So you did the run on a prone without a paddle ?
My board is a prone board but I can stand on it and paddle to get going. I handed my paddle to Dave during the run to get extra footage. Dave uses the paddle to get lifted and then puts it over his shoulder. On really good days Dave will take his prone board and no paddle.

That's Dave Kalama and he has an adjustable paddle. Once he's lifted he shortens the shaft and puts it over his shoulder. The strap is bicycle inner tube. It's permanently tied on and doesn't seem to get in the way while he's paddling.

We've had great downwind conditions on Maui lately. I tried the NL 190 for the first time last weekend. I'd been using the GL 180 for the last year. The new wing is definitely faster and more efficient. It glides over bumps with a lot less effort and turns easily. Getting lifted felt very similar to the GL180. I got a few clips during the last run and handed the my paddle off with the Go Pro attached to Dave as he flew by and he got some nice steady footage too. Dave and I are both riding the NL190. Kathy is riding an Axis 900 and Shep is on the Signature 210 in this video.

Awesome breakdown Jeremy! Does any of it applies if I want to practice lift in dead flat water?
I've only popped up on flat water twice and I used the same technique. It took about 20 sprint strokes to pop up and it was hard on my shoulders so I stopped trying. I recommend a good shoulder warm up routine before attempting to pop up in flat water. There are a few kids that are able to do it with less strokes. I'll try to get video of them next time I see them practicing.

Learning to pop up on the foil is the hardest thing I've had to learn in the world of downwind paddling. I've been at it for a little over a year now and I'm starting to find some techniques that help to get lifted. Hope this video helps anyone that wants to foil downwind.

Nice video! Thanks Larry. The conditions just kept getting better all the way down. How's the footage of the end of the run compare?

Today was amazing! I look over at watched PonoBill drop into a massive swell at Pier 1 that just kept going and going at top speed.
Larry looks like he's having so much fun on that ski. I would love to try it one day but definitely not on a day like today. I'm pretty sure he buried the nose a few times but it doesn't seem to slow him down.

I've noticed that with some of the different fin boxes. Unfortunately, they are not all the same. I doubt it will affect the performance. I drew a pencil line on the base when it was in the box then took it out and sanded it down to the line for a friend that had the same box. It looks better when it sits flush. Let me know if you are coming to Maui and I'll fix it for you and we can go for a run.

Glad you liked the fin SEA. I believe the cut in the base is from a band saw. They are all hand made and a band saw is used to cut the hole out of the middle.

Thanks for the report DJ. Your video is great! It shows how you are able to change directions with one directional stroke instead of 3 or 4. It can be frustrating when you miss an easy connection because you couldn't turn the board in time. The Aercor fin definitely allows you to turn better from the middle of the board and off the tail. Hope you get some big bumps soon. Have fun with the fin!
