Gear Talk / Re: Boards for 300lb folks?
« on: August 26, 2014, 11:38:43 PM »
At my biggest as a SUP-er I was in the high 290s (peaked about 298) and I started out on a Starboard Atlas. It took me from first steps into first allround-class races and into surf (I still enjoy surfing it on small days) and with the tiedown points I've done some river touring too. First Race board was a 14 x 30 Custom DC (305 litres), now I have a 14x29 DC/NSP. First step-down surf SUP was  9'10 Allwave (bit of a love/hate relationship with this one), I am now on a 10'8 JP Fusion, seems to suit the fat, slow waves at my local a bit better. I also use my RED 12'6 x 30" "Race" inflatable quite a bit.

SUP Advocacy / Re: New Jersey SUP legal issues

^Hmmm yes, in my locale we have several reservoirs where sailing is permitted but paddle sports like kayaking, SUP etc are not, for reasons of not wanting people swimming in the drinking water. We also have a couple where sailing is permitted but paddle sports like kayaking, SUP etc re not, because the water quality is so poor the responsible authorities don't want folks getting sick from swimming in it.

Gear Talk / Re: need advice on how to grip a slick paddle shaft
« on: August 12, 2014, 10:51:27 PM »
I'm curious on this subject.

How many people use wax or another form of grip on the paddle shaft?
I don't seem to find a reason to use anything. No slipping problems at all.
Am I the weird one?

Got a starboard enduro that's slicker than toddler snot when it's wet, at the moment it's my weapon of choice for surf. I put one of those Naish paddle grips on it (the ones that were around a couple of years ago...i grabbed a couple off a freebie table at an event)

My  2x Ke Nalu paddles - nothing needed, although on one of them the shaft is getting on a bit and the surface is starting to wear and lose its grippy a little.

Gear Talk / Re: Are coiled leashes considered geeky?
« on: August 10, 2014, 08:51:39 PM »
Dunno about "considered geeky" ...I prefer using a coil or half-coil in flat water and on downwinders. I prefer a straight leash in surf, for whatever reason I find myself more prone to getting tangled in a coil leash if (when) I wipe out.

Very happy with my O'neill 'gooru' in 2mm. Very stretchy/gummy neo, but I only tend to wear it in the cooler months down here in southern OZ. Mid-to-warmer and it's usually boardies and a 1mm 'derevko' neo (  I think it's a south-African brand ? )

Have Surfed a rental 12'1 in the blue colour (dunno what construction that is or if they differ)..I'd reckon it was about 14-15 kg. I enjoyed surfing it immensely but it's a lot of board, you'd want to be a pretty big unit (like 100kg+) to exert some influence on it.

Hey Rik and other Allwave twin finners, what would your thoughts be for these on a 9'10 Allwave?

True Ames Hobie Fish H: 5.25" L: 7.25"

Ok so I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on a set of these but I have a question that  probably belies my ignorance about a few things...these guys have a huge baseline of 7.25" - it would mean the tips (and then some) would be sticking out beyond the outline of my 9'10, possibly by a couple of inches. Would there be any adverse consequences to this?

How tall/ heavy are you? The 12' LPA is a lot of board but one of the funnest, cruisiest boards I've had the pleasure of surfing but I'm 6'2 and about 125kg. If I could get hold of a decent pre-loved one in my part of OZ I'd be on it. If you're sub-100kg though there are plenty of good choices available in OZ
