SUP General / Re: Take a look at page 52 2011 starboard catalog.

Well we all know why, it's a sweet pic of a amazing rider. I am just interested in finding out what their spinmasters are going to say about this one. The other time they got called out they stated that they always show their riders on Starboard product. Well Starboard what's the story this time. Love to hear a response please.

Regarding the impertinent response to my comment... You can assume they did it intentionally. For the sake of objectivity, I prefer to at least consider the possibility there was an error. It's lame regardless and I lose respect for a company when they do this whatever the reason. It's false advertising, but I would at least like to hear their explanation before calling it outright fraud. Either way, there does seem to be a pattern emerging with starboard and this type of thing, and I'm all for calling BS on matters like this when needed. Gotta say that JL baby bombora is looking solid off the bottom in that shot.
I wasn't try to be impertinent, cheeky would be a better choice  ;D

I am a dealer for both lines and this is annoying.( am I allowed to say that? ;) ) This was without a doubt intentional and they are very aware of this little issue. Zoom in on the image in the catalog and you can see the they altered the board in the shots coloring to make it look starboardy. As for the photographer getting compensated that would be a entirely new issue if they swiped a image but I haven't heard anyone cry fowl nor seen anything that points to that. I am sure that they are simply waiting to see if this just burns itself out and goes away.

Third paragraph of her reply last sentence.
Changing the models of THEIR boards is bad enough but using another brands board and photo shopping on some color and outlines is fraud.

Dear All,
We like to refer to Margaretas input in December.

This is why we organized a single person shoot to showcase his capabilities and highlight the purpose of the board, on the products we had. It is of course on a Starboard product, just a slightly different model.
The other alternative was to not give this rider any exposure at all.

Margareta Engstrom

Are you quite sure about that.

I care, I'm not going to lose my mind or anything like that but if I was in the market for a big wave board and I looked at the add I'd want to believe that the board in the pic is the same. Is that too much to ask? Are they selling riders or boards? From what I can find they have been called out on things like this before and they answer in a way that makes me feel like they are selling riders. If Conner is a pro for SB why did he come to Jimmy for a board in the first place? They have good builders at SB. It's our responsibility to bring these things to their attention.

Gear Talk / Re: NSP 12' or Albatross?
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:23:06 PM »
Like Easy Rider I have zero experience with that NSP but I can say that the albatross is a nice ride. I raced it in the recreational 4 mile in the 12'6" stock race board class at the BOP in October and felt pretty good with my results. It's very stable and tracks well with way more glide than any surf shape I've tried, I'm 6'2" and about 200lbs.

This is the entire email, anybody that has met Jimmy knows he's a no b.s. straight shooter. He is not the type to tell you what he thinks you want to hear he just tells it as he sees it.

"Hey Dayton,  I'm not registered on those gossip forums but if I was I'd explain some things that are fact:  Connor does NOT ride many actual Starboard boards.  Starboard likes to use Connor in their promotions because he's HOT but they don't make good enough boards for him to actually WIN any races on or ride waves like he's riding on MY board.  Several months ago Connor asked me to make him another custom wave board and I refused on the grounds that I'm don't make boards for riders of companies that are in competition with me.  The company gets a good picture of the rider on MY board and then they put it into an ad or brochure to promote THEIR brand.  Let their riders use THEIR boards and see how successful they are.  Connor doesn't RACE on Starboard boards either.  He paints other boards to LOOK like Starboards.  Aloha, Jimmy"

And when I asked him if it was ok to share these emails this was the reply

"Hey Dayton,  Don't get me wrong:  I dig the gossip shit too!!!  I just couldn't do it because I'd get too emotional arguing with some of the people who I'd perceive as idiots and I'd start calling names and getting all upset about it.  I wouldn't be able to control myself.  But please, have at it!!!!!  You can quote me as being your source.  Thanks for doing it, actually!!!  I'm not SURE if Connor raced on an actual Starboard board at the Battle of the Paddle (he got third) but maybe I could find out.  Aloha, Jimmy
PS I wonder if Starboard TOOK that board I made for Connor and copied some things off of it????"

I think he is saying the same thing others have said, that the pros are not riding production boards just customs painted to appear like off the rack boards.

The likelihood that this is a mistake rather than an intentional deception is pretty high.

Killer wave and great shot.
I would like to think it's a mistake but if you look closely at the pic in the catalog it looks like the put a black outline on the bottom

Mistake or not... it's not like a mere grammatical error.  It is a pattern of Starboard incorrectly portraying their products to inflate them in the mind of the consumer... this is just bad on every single level.

One of SB's paid athletes chose a different board on which to charge double O surf... Of course Starboard isn't going to make something mass produced specifically for condictions that only .000001% of SUP riders will ever ride... and of couse the athlete is going to want to ride equipment that gives them the best opportunity for success in the given conditions...

So, dial it down a freaking notch cowboys... show your boards... in their elements... with your riders on them... and some hot chicks... IS THAT SO HARD?

Or, buy your team riders some good disability insurance policies and send them out at mid sized Jaws on 10'8" Whoppers... and get some good shots... (please rail... hold... hold... hold... oooooh noooo.....)

Tim
I wonder what SB is going to say about this.
There are builders that mass produce boards for those conditions the board Conner is on is a baby bomb the only difference is the construction on the production models.
I like the whopper comment :-) I would like to see some nutter give it a go

If Jimmy says it's cool I'll post the email he sent. I have to respect the man and ask before I put my foot in my mouth.

Just got a email from Jimmy, he had a few choice words to say about this, but for some reason I think he is laughing at starboard.

I have nothing against Starboards product, that being said I think someone that actually surfs needs to edit there catalog too many mistakes and it makes me feel like they are marketing towards people that are new to the sport and can be sucked in with slick photos.
