pono, thank you for your last. i appreciate your thoughtful expression here. just as an FYI regarding a few important differences between MMA and boxing. in boxing you get hit a good shot or a few good shots and you go down, they make the hitter stop and then they give you 8 seconds to recover ( standing 8 count) . from there on the very same thing could happen again ( up to 3 times in some places before the fight is stopped...and even more than that in areas that dont have 3 knock down rules ) . so in theory over the course of say a six round fight , you could be receiving ( with the 3 knock down rule in effect , at 2 knockdowns per round) 12 concussions of varying severity. that equals A LOT of brain damage. over the course of a career that can lead to lord knows what.
in MMA if you get tagged and stunned, whether you go down ( most times the fighters do ) or not ( at times they end up against the ropes or fencing )  once the ref has determined that you can no longer intelligently defend yourself, he jumps in to stop it immediately, and the match is done. this greatly minimizes the damage done. of course there still is damage done, however the amount is kept at a minimal level when you compare it to boxing.  also, there are other ways of winning-- you can submit your opponent via joint lock or choke. both of these are applied and at that point the person under duress knows that to not submit would ,theoretically , cause damage to his limb or cause him to be rendered unconscious. i know this sounds terrible, but anyone that has 'rolled' around a bit at jiu jitsu or submisson wrestling class knows when they are "caught" and the practice is to "tap out" either verbally or physically, thus signalling submission. and the match is done.  today's MMA is way different than the original UFCs from 10-15 years ago. there are weight classes, timed rounds, limits on the number of rounds, and rule forbidding eye gouging, groin shots , biting etc...
i understand your "old school" thinking.but i would rather have my kids involved in a sport that , because of its inherent nature, is highly regulated and highly structured and every precaution is taken to protect the players, than say football where life altering injuries ( blown knees etc...) seem to be the norm.
one last point and im really pau--MMA and martial arts in general play a HUGE part in our culture over here in hawaii.  we are a melting pot of races and cultures and each one had its own form of mano-a mano combat. right or wrong , we are a scrappy bunch over here. we grow up that way. you might say its in our blood. an after school dust up to settle differences isnt the best way to figure things out, but in these days of knife and gun totting students, a plain ol scrap behind the gym is the least of the evils that could occur. this mentality is only a single facet of the many that make up our collective 'sparkle' as a culture, but its as real and sincere as the "howzit bruddah, aloha!!" that you will be greeted with when you visit.
my freshman is a pretty talented jiu jitsu player, able to take down , control and if needed submit boys and MEN that out weigh him by 40-50 lbs. he does it in class all the time, (and submits me at will at home hehehe ) and it gives me a measure of comfort that if needed he could do it in the street--and not have to throw a single blow. he is humble and goofy and loves his momma. he doesnt make trouble, steers clear of it in fact. mostly people just love him and those very few that dont probably dont F@$K with him to begin with because they know not too. anyways, im rambling...all the best to you.  if you are ever on kauai , ill take you down to my son's dojo and you can watch them roll, if nothing else you'll gain a broader perspective on the nature of the art. we dont have to stay long, just a few minutes...theres a bar that serves really cold beers just downstairs... :)

this is the last i will write regarding MMA in this surf thread, sorry for the distraction.
" I find people are most rigorous in defending things they have their own private doubts about."
and some how YOU are the exception to this rule ? i really didnt have a problem with your reply up until this last sentence.
you are presumptuous in throwing this blanket on me sir. i am FAR from having any doubts about my opinions regarding MMA. i have close friends that are mixed martial artists. They are lifeguards, firemen and cops and prison guards.  i have two sons that are jiu jitsu players-- one of which is beginning to branch out into Mixed martial arts ( incorporating boxing, wrestling, kick boxing etc ). both of them are up standing citizens--one is a full time lifeguard on our northshore .  the other is a freshman with good grades and a wonderful respectful attitude. my close friends that actually train and compete in MMA, along with my kids are more than enough proof that mixed martial artists as a group are just as upstanding and rational as you or i.
i wish you safe fun in the water and a mind that it just a bit more open. aloha. pau.

"Got to say though, it's more than a little psychotic that a "sport" like cage fighting exists. What's next, bear-baiting?

Bullies will exist whether or not there is a venue for them to legitimize their actions, but geez."

im not trying to be argumentative here, but this statement is a wonderful reflection of pure ignorance regarding  MMA, or what you refer to as "cage fighting". the second half of the statement actually almost cancels out the first part. the fact that bullies exist whether or not there is a venue for them to legitimize their actions is very true and provokes the statement : bullies have been around since WAY before "cage fighting" was even thought of. what did they do and what walks of life did they come from back then? they were regular guys, busdrivers, waiters , construction workers etc...but no matter what ,they were bullies. bullies exist in every walk of life. back in the day there were probably bullies that were boxers. so what? just because theres a few bullies that are construction workers doest that make all construction workers bullies? of course not. the vast majority of mixed martial artists are up standing, respectful and humble citizens. there are bad apples everywhere.
as far as comparing MMA to bear baiting, again this ignores the very obvious -- bear baiting is staged by humans putting together animals with little or no ability to reason.  the participants in MMA are human beings that have made the conscious decision to engage in a combat sport. i have my issues with young kids getting involved in full blown matches. and the sport as a whole may not be every bodys cup of tea. but to paint it with such a broad brush as you did , does a great disservice to some of the most talented and hardworking athletes in any sport. i hope this post inspires you to do a little bit of research. and hopefully you will become enlightened.  im not asking you to become a fan--just be fair. mahalo.

this is all fine and good. if this is what maui needs to make it work , great. im hoping my gut feeling that these are the seeds that others will try to take and use for justification to 'regulate' in other places is wrong. keep it on the valley isle. best wishes, aloha.

Stolen Last night on Kauai's east side : 10'6" C4 Sup board.  Blue deck with Grey Deck pad & Orange C4 logo on it, White bottom, Black nose guard. It belongs to my friend's wife and was stolen out of the back of a truck of a friend of ours that he had lent it to.  Truck was parked by the Islander on the Beach. My friend tells me he bought it used and that it is unusual both in its color scheme and in that it has no stringer ? i dunno bout C4s except that they are pricy...im a PSH guy myself ;D.
Any how, if any of my Kauai brethren see this board out in the line-up or for sale hit me up here and i can take it from there.  my friend is a VERY nice guy, but is pretty old school when it comes to justice, so if you happen to know the perp, emphasize  how small this island is and that its not too late to make arrangements to return the board no questions ask. Mahalo.

no, im not asking you if its ok to spray your friends...am i THAT bad at communication?  i guess i am...let me try again:
i was asking you what the logic/justification was of leaving the ORIGINAL pics--the ones that caused this ruckus to begin with--up on this site.  my point is this : why have this type of behavior posted and ( by some folks) cheered on as " fun" when ( in your own words )" these posts were the source of a lot of user complaints" AND " plenty of people thought this showed  bad judgement (both to do it and to show it)"
how can you justify having posts & pictures of bad behavior on this site and then on the other hand suppress the discourse ( no matter how harsh--we are dealing with being SAFE in this particular case) that comes as a fully natural response to those posts and pics? if its wrong to RESPOND with hard words and statements of what would probably happen if this bad behavior were to occur in our neck of the woods, then why is it so right for the actual bad behavior to be glamorized as cool in the area that it actually happened?

im not interested in whether you want to spray somebody or not admin...im more interested in why you would find it acceptable to allow publishing of posts that reflect BAD behavior...and then suppress postings that reflect the reactions of people that are offended by that behavior.
either dont allow that type of post...or allow reactions to those posts to stand.  the potential damage that could occur with that type of fool's play deserves ( and in reality would trigger) the response it gets. aloha.

how it WAS expressed is no longer the issue ( the posts were deleted..its pau!) ..now that it has been expressed in a more... civil manner...what say you admin? what say you?

admin: fair enough, but why not remove the very post(s) that are obviously the source of the problem here in our virtual line-up? to have those pics up only encourages negative behaviour in some folks--someone somewhere is gonna try and pull this off because they thought it was funny here on the forum, and thats gonna lead to problems...
if we cant post what our potential REACTION would be, then why is it OK to post the actual ACTION?
not trying to be difficult here, just following cause and effect logic through its natural cousre... :)
