Well put ehrawn...
Being a firefighter i know we are "under scrutiny" along with all public servant workers... Funny thing is, when everyone was fat and happy they didn't care about "us".... Now, we are all overpaid, over-everything, etc... All i ask is to all my fellow SUp'rs out there find out the details before you judge, there is alot of bad info being tossed around....
And, i didn't see alot of the complainers behind me when they were handing out applications, everyone had the same chance to get in the same lines!
Let's get back to the fun stuff now!

Was wondering what the "standard" is for paddle length for racing..... You guys use a longer shaft when competing?

I have just made the same jump as you, my 11'6" Laird that i used in my first "race" to a 12'6" race board... I have demo'd a few of the more popular boards to find the one that best suits me right now... I am sure with more time on it i will want to jump onto something faster (which also equates to not as stable!)... Best advice i have is try as many as you can, but ONLY buy what you are comfortable on right now... Trying to buy for the future is not the way to go, fall enough and you will avoid even getting on it! The wider Starboards (Free Race) are great, very stable yet fast enough for us beginner racers... I ended up with a Riviera Ron House, very happy with it! The Bark, Ohana, Starboard Surf Race, etc... are great but you sacrifice stability for a quicker board=narrower.... It is tough, hope this helps! BTW, my local spot is choppy with small surf.....Good Luck!
